Iowa House passes largest teacher pay increase in state history

Iowa Democrats have been pushing for this for years, so it's about time. Awesome for teachers and support staff in schools who definitely deserve the bump in pay.

Unfortunately, there seems to be no plans on how to make the increased funding to districts sustainable. Gonna be some major issues down the road unless they get that figured out and properly fund it.

What do you do with the 7-10 year teacher that just got to $50k?

Probably the same thing that happens everywhere else. Nothing, and to boot, let’s pay off those student loans of the new teachers where the 7-10 year teachers/employees already paid them off.

Great news for the new teachers though!

They're getting a one time payment from the state this year to appease them a little. After that, there's not much the district can do so they'll pretty much be screwed.
Really? Curious where you see that. Not saying you’re wrong.

A positive and significant step for teachers, brought to you by a Republican governor and Republican legislature, and people still bitch and whine.
Still though, $45K? That comes out to about $21/hour which is basically what kids are getting to work in fast food these days.

Not a lot to hang your hat on. If educators were truly valued they start out making double that amount.

In a short time Iowa will rank 5th in the nation for average new teacher salary.

If that it isn't good enough for some, then maybe those people should explore other professions.

Without enough funding the salary schedules will probably have several steps frozen at $50,000 with the only chance for a salary increase after passing the original $50,000 step.

What world do you live in where you think kids are getting paid that much and how much are adults making in that world?

Plus teachers will be making 50k and working 9-10 months a year.

Hold on how do they get credit for finally doing something the other party wanted to do for many many years?

To me this is how conservatism should work. It should be about policies, and putting the brakes on things but eventually landing in a better spot. The brakes sometimes may needlessly slow down progress (we could have done this years ago!!) but other times it may prevent unintended consequences of grand progressive ideas.

That type of conservatism would be far preferable to dark and wild conspiracies', cult of personality, grievances and everything MAGA that makes up the current GOP/conservative movement.

The last governor that cut educational funding in Iowa was a Democrat.
BULLSHIT!!!!!

here is one

Been in the industry for 12 years and this is the FIRST TIME IN 12 YEARS they did not kick us in the crotch and then turn around and tell everyone that teachers are turning every one gay or whatever. Eff them. its about time.

I haven't seen any information on that unless it says that in the bill and is not being covered by media, yet. I did see that anyone with up to 12 years experience will have a minimum of 62K. Not sure how those with more than 15 years and up get impacted.

Daughter in law works for school district and she does
As a teacher in Iowa not possible, it's illegal.

24.52(3) Professional employee. Unemployment insurance payments which are based on school employment shall not be paid to a professional employee for any week of unemployment which begins between two successive academic years, between regular terms, or during a period of paid sabbatical leave if the individual has a contract or reasonable assurance to perform services in any such capacity for any educational institution for both such academic years or both such terms. However, unemployment insurance payments can be made which are based on non-school-related wage credits pursuant to subrule 24.52(6).

well, it doesn't happen everywhere else. Maybe for some hourly jobs but not always in the professional field. Pay compression can cost companies their best employees, so many will try to compensate for that issue.
I don't expect that here on the public dime.

That is NOT a cut of existing funding levels.

How many hours do you think a teacher who coaches one sport or one club/extra curricular works in a year? There are a handful of teachers that work the bare minimum hours and do nothing outside the class, most do not. I'd venture a guess that those that use the "9-10" month response work hourly jobs doing the minimum and they just suspect that's what everyone else does too.
Please explain/show the math for your response.
