Really believed Wegher if he stayed with Iowa that Wegher could have been a star like McCaffrey is today!

He even made it to the NFL 5 years after playing major college football which is impressive!

Except Wegher was about 6" shorter and half as fast- I opened this thread expecting to see a comparison to Tim Dwight- not some dumb rich kid that pissed his chance away.

He didn't piss his chance away as he is on an NFL roster. What he did was make it almost impossible to get where he is today but he managed to overcome and outgrow his earlier screw ups.

I guess some people take the easier path and still don't make it. He's taking the hard path and is knocking on the door.

In the modern era, it was clearly Tim Dwight. I was always disappointed that Hayden didn't use Dwight the way Shaw is using McCaffrey. If he had, Dwight would have turned in similar results.

LOL, McCaffery is a hundred times better than Dwight could ever dream of being.

I think the Dwight comparison is pretty fair. Iowa just never put him in the backfield, but the big plays and explosiveness are very similar. McCaffrey may be better, but 100x? Nah.

Dwight played RB as a freshman but wasn't good enough to see the field behind Shaw/Banks. He moved to WR his soph year.

My brother was in school at Iowa during the Dwight days , saw him play live a bunch. Guy was unreal , completely misused , but what a player despite Fry's coaching.
McCaffrey is really a different player , not a straight ahead big burst guy like Dwight, but shifty. Tim was shifty , just powerful. Both great players no doubt. Btw, Timmy almost went to Stanford and played for Bill Walsh, bet he wishes he had that decision over again. Walsh would have used him correctly.

I'll probably get chastised for saying this, but I think McCaffrey is a combination of Tim Dwight and Ronnie Harmon. While Dwight had top-notch speed, the difference between him and McCaffrey is the stop-and-go ability, the ability to change directions and accelerate really quickly in his change of pace and change of direction moves.

I also think Ronnie Harmon was a better pass-catcher than Dwight, at least out of the backfield. In Dwight's defense, we didn't get to see him catch balls out of the backfield much as a Hawkeye.

The ironic thing is that if Dwight hadn't gone to Iowa, he would have gone to Stanford. He was pretty wooed by Palo Alto, if I remember correctly.

Kinnick is the only possibility. Dwight was a great return man and very good receiver but not nearly the running back that McCaffery is. That kid is a very rare talent.

If McCaffery isn't a top 5 pick next year, it's a riot. He's the most explosive back since Bush.

Not only did I see him play every game at Iowa, but I know the family well.

He couldn't even see the field in the NFL outside of kick return.

Think McCaffery will have a better or worse NFL career than Dwight, who no one outside of the Iowa fanbase even remembers?

Tim Dwight played WR for quite a few years in the NFL, in addition to being a return man. He threw that great block to spring Tomlinson on a TD run when he played for San Diego, and he also threw a TD pass while playing for the Falcons. Dwight finished 7th in Heisman voting despite being completely underused by Hayden Fry his senior season.

And if no one outside of Iowa remembers Timmy D, explain why the Big Ten's special teams award is named after him and Johnny Rodgers? Sorry, but your ignorance is showing about as much as your bad manners, dude.

What were his NFL career stats, and where was he drafted?

Who do you think will have the more successful pro career? Did TD ever finish 2nd for the Heisman?

Retard.
So you have 11 messages total and you are calling posters names. Good job Rookie. I think TD finished in the Top ten in the Heisman once but we all know Heisman trophy winners always succeed in the NFL. I have no doubt that CM is good and he will be drafted in the NFL but the days of drafting RBs in the first 5 picks of the NFL are over.

McCaffrey reminds me of Tim Dwight. Maybe we should have used TD just like Stanford uses McCaffrey.

This. Not to mention he was a big return weapon for the Falcons on their run to the Super Bowl, returning a kick-off for TD in that Super Bowl game. Dwight was the only McCaffery-type Iowa player I've seen in my lifetime. That 1995 Sun Bowl team that destroyed PAC-10 Co-Champ Washington was loaded with athletes on offense. Obviously, there have been other players before my time that were in the same company...

Ed Podolak (and his NFL Playoff all-purpose yards record and Super Bowl ring)
Bob Jeter (Rose Bowl rushing and longest TD records, Super Bowl 1&2 Champion with Green Bay, multiple Pro Bowls)
Nile Kinnick (won nearly every national "athlete of the year" award across all sports, including the Heisman. The head of every B1G game's flipped coin to this day).

#5 is crazy good...the moves he put on in the open field, the strength, the speed. Best feet I've seen in a long time.
Off hand, I recall the complete whiffs he gave to King, Mabin and Jewel.
Unreal...and yes, better than Dwight. Dwight was amazing, just not McCaffery.

How was Bush in the NFL huh??? Garbage!!! McCaffery will be a 3rd down NFL scat back at best.

Dude broke Barry Sanders all-purpose yards record. Probably the hardest college football record to break. I'm not saying he'll be Walter Payton, but he will have a better career than Bush. Mark my words on that. His Dad wasn't too shabby in the NFL either.

Look up the stats on that record. How many of those guys in the top 5 amounted to anything in the NFL besides Sanders?? None of them!!

Ha. Where's Bush now??? Just a scat back. That's all McCaffery is. He will never be more.
McCaffery is better than Bush...runs with power, stronger in the legs. Also, a much more disciplined kid with
a special work ethic. Regardless, for your purposes, he was the best player on the field and it wasn't close.
Hope he stays healthy. He is special.

He is good. But imo. He will only be a 3rd down back in the NFL unless he adds more balk. He is not a 25 carry a game back right now.

Bush had a pretty decent career. Also you don't need to be a 25 carry back when he can return kicks, punts, and be effective in the passing game. I'd still use a top 5 pick on him.

Wegher ran a 4.4 in pro day so McCaffery is going to run a 2.2?
Oh look, more revisionist Wegher history! FYI he ran over a 4.5 40. Which is more than the 4.2 that people were claiming he did in high school. Wegher is a joke and didn't sniff the field all year. I doubt he will ever get an NFL regular season touch. McCaffery is on a completely different level of anyone Iowa has ever had.

I would tend to agree with this. Dwight was a tad faster, I believe, Big 10 sprint champion if I recall correctly. McCaffrey is more agile with better moves, along with some pretty good speed. Wehger isn't is the same class as these two, not even close.

So McCaffery is at a 2.25 now? Still pretty fast.
