Iowa recruiting thread.

They said he got hurt in his first match out of redshirt which was vs McKee.
I missed that. I remember there being rumors he got hurt post ohio state dual in practice and he showed up with a shoulder brace the next match against nebraska. did not have the brace previously.

I think it's a case where it was hurt vs McKee and then progressively got worse the longer he wrestled with it.

I don’t think anyone is saying Carl isn’t a great coach.

Clearly, Carl is a tremendous recruiter and salesman (a big part of coaching). He is able to get Age level world champions to follow him to PSU (little extra $ didn’t hurt in his early days to get the ball rolling). Many/most of the world champions are able to maintain/improve on their dominance under his (and assistant coaches) tutelage.

I don’t know that he has proven he can take above average talent and significantly elevate their games to become NCAA champions/world champions, but then again, he doesn’t have to. He starts with world champions. If that one doesn’t maintain their dominance, he moves on to the next world champion at his weight and is able to convince them to go to PSU. It is a skill nobody else has managed to accomplish which makes him a great coach.
Spoiler alert, above average talent doesn't win national or world titles. It's undeveloped talent, that had it in them already. Think like a pyramid, as you go up levels there are less and less in that talent pool. Especially these days with more training at early on in a career
Back in the day you had most athletes playing multiple sports and with wrestling you had plenty of guys with untapped potential. I grew up in a wrestling area and few people concentrated on that. I graduated from high school in 1981 BTW. Things are different now. Even mythical Louden Swain wrestled Shute in 1985, 38 years ago.
Good athletes could be developed then, now to do the same you need to find that rare specimen who somehow still has a lot to learn.
I have a few friends who were hockey dads, they spent a ton on money a year on hockey. If they were wrestling dads that money went to lessons, club fees, a trainer, and a diet plan and they probably would spend less than their hockey fees.

Wait, are there people actually claiming in this thread that Nick Saban isn’t a great coach? Cael too? Some people are just crazy.
It's a narrative, it's strange. It's like if you somehow can argue a certain point well enough you change reality. Sort of like a yes set, .

You get a consensus and move forward with the sale, or psychotherapy with a patient, things like that. ever see an online argument and someone mentions how they usually agree with you this percent of the time? It's similar to that. Enough people say the same thing, the problem is solved and everything is good.

184 lb All-American (7th - stuck Kane from UNC in 7th place match, the guy who knocked Assad out on the backside). Was the 14 seed, with a 29-6 record. Lost to Aaron Brooks by fall on front side, and Coleman from ISU by fall on backside.

I’d take him. He’s a pinner. Funny, I swear I looked him up after seeing him AA and he was out of eligibility.

Just looked him up again. He has done 6 years in college, but in 2020 (the year ncaas got cancelled) he was only 1-1 so maybe he’s getting that year back.

I’m guessing this is it with a medical hardship waiver. Per, https://clariongoldeneagles.com/sports/wrestling/roster/will-feldkamp/8862

2019-20 (Northern Illinois): Finished the season with a 1-2 record competing at 184. Won his first bout of the year with an 8-3 decision over Oklahoma’s Jake Boyd at the Michigan State Open (Nov. 2)…Suffered a season-ending injury in his third match of the season at the MSU Open.

That’s what I remember. I had watched his match vs. Heinselman a few times, trying to identify the sequence that presumably caused the injury. I thought at the time that “maybe” I spotted it, but it was not obvious/conclusive. 🤷‍♂️

I'd like TNT to be proactive and get their recruiting in order so they can actually plan what they are doing vs all this scrambling around trying to plug holes.

I'm in actual awe at the absolutely amazing job at mismanagement Tom is doing. Lost Chittum to ISU. Unbelievable.

SMH,

Good thing we had him gray shirt. So add VV a hopeful AA and lose CC a hopeful title contender and we are a net negative to what we were yesterday, 157 still a void and team dropping like a lead weight in the NCAA order of finish.

Our leadership has been struggling in recruiting and big match preparation for years and now add decision making, communication and team management to the mix. Their behavior from the corner has always been poor and at times embarrassing. As the results dwindle the worse it looks. I loved them as competitors. As coaches they always had small cracks in their game but were able to overcome them. The cracks have grown through the years however. I'm not convinced the status quo is the best we can do at Iowa wrestling, especially considering the resources and brand associated with the program. I think we would be surprised at the number of coaches that could do as good or better with the resources available at Iowa at their disposal. This staff is at a real crossroads. They can either get hungry, fill some of the cracks in their game and learn from their shortcomings or continue to slide. I'm not confident in it happening.

If TNT are one thing it's honest and I don't believe they can look in the mirror and honestly feel they are getting it done like they should be.

. . . If TNT are one thing it's honest and I don't believe they can look in the mirror and honestly feel they are getting it done like they should be.
I would bet they are honest about this.
However, they will also probably believe to the end that they are the best men for the job. Self-doubt does not seem to be part of their personality.

This is a consequence of coaching decisions. Don't let anyone tell you different.
I’d love to know the whole story believe me…..I’m way older than Tom and he’s old school…… my comment was more based on the thought you can’t let the athletes dictate how you run your program and who you recruit

If the Ferrari clan is at the core of this then I’m not surprised and I’d agree that was a poor coaching decision……. I didn’t agree with it but trusted Tom’s judgement

Amazing how - with not a single Ferrari enrolled and they've caused this much chaos and damage. What the hell are TNT thinking?

And its only going to worse if they do come.

As many people have said Brands is unwilling or maybe unable to adapt to what it will take to get back on top. Gone are the days where you can "outwork" everyone else and win that way. Wrestling has changed. It's strategic now. They have shown no signs of being able to win the strategy battle. I'm not sure they're capable.
