Mayor can wait: Don’t expect any Iowa State men’s basketball games soon against Fred Hoiberg-coached Nebraska.

Asked by a young fan in the crowd if that was a possibility, director of athletics Jamie Pollard suggested that the only possibility might be in the NCAA tourney, quickly pointing out, “That’s one thing Nebraska hasn’t been to ever. They’ve got a little work to do before we might be seeing them on the court.’’

I suppose that you could argue that going 0-7 in the big dance is metaphorically not being there, but I think Jamie is trying to be literal here. BTW, Nebraska leads the all-time series with Iowa State 131-103 (per the Nebraska media guide).

Its going to take a long time for a lot of ISU fans, and apparently the AD too, to get over Fred going to Nebraska.

They were all convinced he would never coach in college again because he "hated recruiting".

They won't ever get over it. And Nebbie fans will only exacerbate the issue with their arrogance.

They deserve and need another couple of down years. Hope it happens.

How should Pollard have replied to that question?

Maybe not be such a dick about it? Especially since ISU is probably going to finish somewhere around 8-10 place in the Big 12 next season.

I actually support him being a dick about it. Some fans need to get over their Hoiberg obsession. There are some ISU fans with an Iowa obsession too, and they need to get over it. Both should be mocked. Just IMO.
maybe your ad should get over it too. you think he would have responded that way if hoiberg wasn't the coach at un?

You actually believe Fred will still be in Lincon when Lipsey starts college?

Did I say that? Common time frame for someone in Lipsey's class to commit would be the summer of 2021 so roughly 2 years from now. I absolutely think Fred will still be in Lincoln when that time comes.

Of course you do, ISU fans find it impossible to be critical of anything Pollard does.

I think that 2 years is the over/under on Fred being gone. Curious to see what happens.

If Fred is there and lands Lipsey, good for him. If he is landing kids like Lipsey that will be more detrimental to Iowa than ISU as we will never have to face him. Would rather he go to Lincoln than Lawrence.

No respect for a man whose first name is Jamie.

I like ISU clowns trashing nebrasketball. Nebraska fans need to be put in their place. They are objectively one of the worst basketball programs in history. Their fans completely ignore their inferiority because they have their heads shoved so far up their cornholes.

I wouldn't say they are the worst. Outside of the goose egg of NCAA victories, I'd say the program has just been mediocre. The program has a career win percentage of .525 (1,477-1,337). They've had players go to the NBA, they've had first-team all-conference players. They've had nice seasons, really nice seasons, sporadically....just never gotten over that NCAA goose egg.

Yeah, sounds like some hurt feelings lol.

How should Pollard have replied to that question?
There are 100 ways he could have responded ... Maybe a simple:

“We do not have plans to play Nebraska in the immediate future but our basketball paths could some day cross in a tourney, etc.”

Instead he went the extra step to try and be edgy/funny ... I don’t know his intention... But don’t act like you are leading Duke basketball here.

Fine. They are one of the worst power five schools of all time. According to wikipedia, they are the only power five school to have 0 ncaa tournament wins.

NCAA tournament success should be the ultimate qualifier of a good program (both getting to the tournament and winning games). Likewise, bad programs are qualified by NCAA tournament failure. In the NCAA failure department, Nebraska stands alone.

I think Fred will be successful at UNL.

I don't begrudge him the job or success, and neither do any of my Cyclone fan friends. I realize some feel differently, but it's a small minority, IMO.

If he had gone to Iowa or a Big XII school, that would have been entirely different. Or if he had gone from ISU to a college job somewhere. Of if the ISU job had been open and he had chosen to go elsewhere.

But he went from ISU to the NBA, then to a team we no longer play (except for the closed scrimmage pre-season).

I honestly don't know any ISU fans, personally, that care that Fred is at Nebby. Message boards are not your every day fans. Clearly some fans are butt hurt but I don't think it's that many. I hope he fails miserably but that's just because it's Nebraska.

“Poster, just suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a Hawkeye fan. But I repeat myself.”

In terms of Power conferences (Big 10, B12, ACC, Pac-12, SEC, Big East) one could make the argument that Nebraska is the worst basketball program, and it's not really that close. No other power conference team is o-fer in the NCAA tournament, at least in a quick scan of NCAA tournament appearances in power conference teams. The things you say about NBA players, first-team players, nice seasons, every other Power conference team can make the same claim and likely with much more volume. Even Iowa, with basically 20 years of extremely mediocre basketball results, has 29 NCAA tournament victories all-time.

I do think Nebraska is in a position to have success (with the right coach) at an equal level of any Big 10 team not named Michigan, MSU, Indiana, OSU and Purdue (and maybe Illinois). Good facilities, good fan support, good support by the administration. Miles was a good guy but never really built a program. He was good at getting players. Hoiberg can recruit and coach (at least at the college level).
