Iowa State Trashes Nebraska Basketball Program

Yikes ... :)

Mikki Moore C, PF 1999 2012
Yikes is right...back in early 80’s Iowa had as much NBA type talent on one team (BJ Armstrong, Roy Marble, Kevin Gamble, Ed Horton, Brad Lohan’s, etc) as Nebby had all time.

ISU started the smack......it's a bit comical since:

All-Time Record
Nebraska: 1,477-1,337 (.525)
Iowa State: 1,376-1,322 (.510)

Series History
Nebraska leads 131-103

I know, before you all remind me again of the lack of postseason success, with that said, I still find the above comical.

Huskers have had 26 players in program history taken in the NBA Draft and obviously players who played in the league that were undrafted.

Wayne Morgan made the NCAA tournament at ISU and won a game.

Nebraska has never won a game.

I mean think about that. It's honestly shocking.

Nebraska has produced zero NBA players since the 90s. That's basically an entire generation.

Pollard's comments at the Dubuque tailgate stop from the Lounge:

During Iowa State’s annual Cyclone Tailgate Tour stop in Dubuque, a fan asked Jamie Pollard if they will ever bring back the billboards “It’s A Cyclone State”.
Pollards response: “Back then, we needed to poke the bear, Now, we’ve become the bear.”

“Thirteen, fourteen years ago, the Hawkeyes were tops,” Pollard said. “And we did poke the bear. I would contest that the roles have reversed and we’re the bear now.”

LOL Jamie!

Why was a Hawkeye fan at the Cyclone tailgate tour?

Dear lord he is delusional as some of the clone posters here if he actually thinks that's true. Over that time span they have a slight edge in mens bball. Besides that what else do they have? Volleyball? Who knows whatever after thought sport they can stake claim to.

Mean time Iowa has gone 9-5 in football with 4 game winning streak in those 14 years. Hasn't lost a wrestling match in that time span. Has won more in women's bball. Iowa actually still has a baseball team that has had postseason success under Coach Heller. Mens track just won their 2nd conference title in last 7 years. Seriously Jamie needs to quit smoking what ever he is taking a drag off of or least put the bottle down.

Obviously a whos who in the NBA. Like, who is Tony Farmer or who is Rich King? :)

I like ISU clowns trashing nebrasketball. Nebraska fans need to be put in their place. They are objectively one of the worst basketball programs in history. Their fans completely ignore their inferiority because they have their heads shoved so far up their cornholes.

It's so ironic that they play the "look where we are now" card for hoops but refuse to look that direction for football.

ISU was awful before Johnny Orr. Like pathetically bad.

Orr wasn’t even that great in Ames, but the product was at least watchable.

Your comments might be valid, but let's remember what his job. Is he supposed to be a realist at an alum/donor function? What does that fan base want to hear?

In looking from a far, Pollard has elevated Iowa St's program in his time there. He successfully marketed crappy basketball and football teams....which created a new fan base for what now are pretty decent teams with all time high season ticet holders for both. Not sure Barta has had the same type of success in martketing Iowa's athletic programs.

I am from Des Moines originally. Go back there often. Sickens me to see how Red that city has become. ISU really has taken a grip there. Part of that is due to proximity, part of it is due to the incessant propaganda from Randy Peterson and the Des Moines Register, but I believe a large part of it is due to Pollard. He markets the hell out of Des Moines. There are billboards everywhere, posters in the Jordan Creek Mall, and radio advertisements all the time. I don't see squat from the hawks, almost like Barta flat-out doesn't care about the biggest market in Iowa.

Iowa sports are overall better, but ISU is improving. Even without the lawsuits, you could easily make the argument that Pollard is a better AD than Barta.

Jesus Pollard was the bear in hibernation last year as you lost in football, men’s and women’s basketball and wrestling to big brother? Pollard knows exactly what he needs to do. Just try and compare yourself favorably to Iowa. It is their only relevance measuring stick. And their fans especially those on CF blindly follow.

Des Moines is still all Hawkeyes. I’m always surprised that there isn’t more of an ISU presence there every time that I head back.

The exact opposite of your post actually.

I agree x100 that Des Moines has become mostly Cyclone Fans.

Iowa won the Cy-Hawk competition this year, which pulled the Hawks into a tie in the series.

Simply not true.
In DM it is.

Maybe the suburbs have a 50/50 mix. But the overall metro is probably 65/35.

I mostly hang out in DM when I’m back & I’m blown away by how Hawkeye dominate it is.

Especially when I read threads like this that ISU is making a presence there.

I don’t see it. I don’t see it at all.

I honestly don't know any ISU fans, personally, that care that Fred is at Nebby. Message boards are not your every day fans. Clearly some fans are butt hurt but I don't think it's that many. I hope he fails miserably but that's just because it's Nebraska.

But it does sound like Jaimie's butt is hurting. Or is he just crying for some attention. If Hoiberg signs a kid ISU wants I think those fans you say don't care will suddenly care a great deal.

Look douche I live in DSM and have for years. It's way more red than it used to be. People in eastern Iowa don't care about ISU, which is how it should be. But HERE in DSM there's a lot more Clones than there was 20 years ago. Keep spouting though.

Gee, I wonder if that could be because iowa has had a well established fanbase already.

At Iowa you get a statue if you're a legendary Heisman trophy winner...a Hall of Fame coach that shookup the B1G and helped integrate college football or the greatest coach in the history of his sport with 15 NCAA titles.

In ames, you get one with a .521 winning % and 1 Sweet 16.

There are definitely more ISU fans in DM than there used to be. ISU has really targeted the area with marketing over the past 15 years. But it's still Hawkeye dominant.

Many of them are "convenience" fans. It's easier to drive 30 miles and tailgate in an open field, than put in the effort to attend an Iowa game. No shortage of people who just go to drink beer and grill burgers...the game is secondary..

In short, it's closer and has always been easier and cheaper to get tickets. I'd suggest your average IOWA fan's loyalty runs much deeper

How should Pollard have replied to that question?

You know it and so do all of us - he’s an ass with this answer. But that’s what Cyclone fans seem to want. You’re usually rational. Surprised you don’t see this?

To directly answer - Rusty Dad already said it well but simply say “no plans to directly schedule Nebraska but you never know if we may match up in a tournament some day, non/con or NCAA/NIT”

Be the bear!

Cael is making a run at that title, isn't he?

Cedar Rapids is definitely showing more cardinal + gold than it used to. No question than Iowa dominates (due to proximity and media) but to say that Eastern Iowa doesnt care about ISU is false

Sorry douchebag but you’re wrong.

Lol, I know more about my old area than you do currently living there!

Who would’ve thunk that??

He’s actually correct. Others tried telling you this as well.
Nah, he’s not.

I’d estimate 65/35 Hawk fans in the metro.

Just because you see more Clown fans than you used to 20 years ago doesn’t mean that they even come close to the amount of Iowa fans there.

Well, I am simply replying to the post where you called the other guy a DB for claiming there are in fact a lot more ISU fans in the metro now. It is only about 4 posts above. You seem to now be agreeing with it?

Look, I have no idea what the percentage breakdown is. It may very well be 65/35 as you suggest. The point is there's a lot more people driving around with ISU plates and sporting their ISU gear in the Des Moines metro now. I don't know if these people were always ISU fans or if they graduated from ISU within the last 30 years and settled in the DSM area, or what... but at any rate, it appears now you agree.

I dont think anyone is alleging there are MORE clown fans than hawk fans in the metro. But, from my perspective, the clowns are more prevalent than they ever were.

Objectively speaking:
  • There are more ISU alum in Des Moines than there are Iowa alum. https://alliance.isualum.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/State-maps_Page_2.jpg
  • It's easier to be an ISU fan than a hawk in Des Moines. Its a 30 minute drive to a game compared to an hour and a half.
  • I have personally seen giant ISU sports billboards on Merle Hay, SW 63rd, near downtown, and they took up a huge wall in Jordan Creek mall. Im sure there have been Hawkeye football billboards but I dont remember ever seeing one.
  • ISU's football team is historically awful and the best they've done in the past decade is 8-5. Yet they are selling out games left and right. That's indicative of a well marketed program.
Look, the thing I love about the hawks is that they are global. I literally watched last years bowl game in London with 30 London I-clubbers. ISU has nothing like that. ISU does not have a footprint outside of Iowa that I'm aware of. But Londoners aren't going to football games. We didn't sell out a single football game two years ago, and the basketball team lost money that same year. Slap up a billboard, schedule more basketball games at the Well, play a spring scrimmage in Valley stadium EVERY YEAR. Instead of wasting money on flamethrowers for the bball team, buy some ad space in Des Moines. Drum up some interest and convince those fans to make the trek to watch a ball game in Iowa City.
