So, I have heard some chatter that this could be a night game in Iowa City. Looking at each teams first 3 games and I would have to think Iowa has the tougher schedule head to head the first 3 games. As BYU was a joke last year I think they won 2/3 games at most? Western Kentucky might be a tad tricky though.. I wouldn’t be too shocked to see them give Wisconsin all they can handle that game.. the other 2 will be wood shed spankings I would think. Iowa will have a pretty tough N Illinois team that BEAT US.. (gulp) not too long ago. And Iowa State, throw out the records and whatever but I see the Hawks winning rather comfortably or it could go the other way and be a dog fight like last year.. not a game to take lightly as ISU definitely gained my respect last year and Hakeem Butler is a damn stud receiver that can stretch the field and is pretty fast.

Me thinks if Iowa stays injury free and comes unscathed through the first 3 games which I am confident they will and winning with fashion and style (Sexy)? Mmmm will see. I think if it’s a night game and I expect Wisconsin to be in the top 10 for sure maybe even top 5/6 when they come rolling into IC .. if Iowa plays like they’re capable me thinks Iowa is overdue for a good ole ass kicking and Wisconsin’s ass is going to be the receiving end.. perfect setting.. both 3-0 and Iowa will be sky high and I think they’re going to be ready for the occasion much like to the tune of O$U last year.. if the Hawks can capitalize and win the BTW is going to be re-routed through Iowa City..

Iowa

-N Illinois
-Iowa St

Wisconsin

-Western Kentucky
-New Mexico Lobos
-BYU Cougars

Wow. Blocked that one out of my mind apparently
Northern Illinois seems to get overlooked but they are a pretty damn good program. After NIU beat Nebraska last year and mindful of how tough they have played the Hawkeyes, I went back to see how they have fared against B10 opponents over the last 10 years. You might be surprised.......

2008
@ Illimois - Lost by 3
2009
@ Wisconsin - Lost by 3
@ Purdue - Won by 7
2010
@ Illinois - Lost by 6
@ Minnesota - Won by 11
2011
@ Wisconsin - Lost by 41
2012
@ Iowa - Lost by 1
2013
@ Iowa - Won by 3
@ Purdue - Won by 31
2014
@ Northwestern - Won by 8
2015
@ Ohio State - Lost by 7
2017
@ Nebraska - Won by 4

A combined 6-6 against B10 teams in the last 10 seasons. All of the losses were within one TD except the Wisconsin game in 2011 which was a blowout loss.

Also, 3-1 vs. B10 since they beat Iowa in 2013. They will come to Kinnick expecting to win. I wish the Hawks opened with Northern Iowa instead of Northern Illinois.

That 4.3 defense will get solved sooner rather than later and when it does it’s going to be like the “wishbone offense” teams had fits trying to figure out back in the glory days.. maybe it won’t happen this year or the year after but the juggernaut offenses installed in today’s offensive schemes will find a way to pounce on the 4.3 Defense.

I truly wonder how Iowa’s defense would be with the 4.3 and if we have the personnel to play it like the BADgers?

That damn 4-3 defense seems to own Iowa’s blocking scheme.

Good stuff NU, thanks for sharing that pretty interesting stats

Wisconsin returns pretty much the entire offense, including the entire OL, which should be the best OL, we've had in 4-5 years, maybe longer.

Jonathon Taylor and the 4-5 other guys who will fight for PT behind him, should give us our best running game in a long time also.

Add the best WR corps, the deepest Wisconsin has EVER had, an improving Alex Hornibrook and we are REALLY really excited as to what this offense can accomplish.

Defensively, we aren't as deep and will depend on new new CB's but the talent is there and in Jim Leonhard we trust.

We should be good upfront against the run, with Loudermilk and Rand on the outside and Sagapolu in the middle, along with Van Ginkel, Edwards and Connolly ALL returning at LINEBACKER .If a 4th linebacker, emerges, we're hoping its BAUN but there are 2-3 other good candidates including another terriffic walk-on linebacker in Tyler Johnson (another former QB), maybe we can hide the talented but GREEN CB's, while they get up to speed.

Kicking and specials should be very good again with everyone back.
I think we'll score on everybody this season, question is, will we stop the passing game too.

Hornibrook taking better care of the ball should be the #1 priority for the Badger offense #2 TE , all other pieces are there offensively. Defense will decide how far they go . Iowa will have to play very well and win the TO battle to win the game.

We do primarily play a 4-3. Wisconsin and Nebraska play a 3-4.

I found this blurb about the N. Illinois defense:

The Huskies run a 4-3 defense, with three down lineman and one defensive end who stands up and crowds the line of scrimmage. The essential goal of this defense is to stop the run and force teams to throw more and more as the game wears on.

I don't know if the Huskies' scheme is more similar to IA's 4-3 or Wisconsin's 3-4.

I think it would be good if it is similar to the Badger's scheme, as BF can certainly use a little extra play calling practice against a 3-4 defense.

I think the Badgers take a big step back this year. Even with another weak schedule.

Sadly I just don't see the Iowa D keeping up against this Wisky team. Unless brian's O comes play for 60 minutes, it could be a laugher. Even if the O does its job, edge to the fatties. Best case scenario is a squeaker like the one against psu with a deciding play in our favor.

Barry Alvarez’s grandson Jason Ferguson, all 6’5 of him, should be our best TE in a long time but might have to share the position early with Penniston, the former four star who has been mostly sitting behind Fumagali past three years, he’s very ready, TE won’t be an issue.

I think that is wishful thinking more than reality.
The entire offense is back and a year older and the front seven should be great, maybe better, though nowhere as deep, only weakness is young DBs and they are talented and Jim Leonhard, already is a great Coach.

Defense is everything. I think you’re wishful thinking & will be very disappointed in Wis’ season.

Kind of like how Iowa struggled last year against no.3 Oh St?! The same team that handled Wis last year.

Let's not forget that we did play wisconsin last year as well.
I do get your point though and I'm not suggesting that Iowa has zero chance. But their style and execution has become our kryptonite....they seem to do what we like to do on O and D with larger guys on the OL and faster back-7 guys on D.

As much as I hate to say it they have had better running backs for years and have already taken the step in the passing game we are all hoping we take this year. If wiscy had Stanley instead of Hornibrook they would be a solid NC contender not just a dark horse NC contender.

KF is probably as good as or better than any coach at development wiscy has had over the last 10 years, BA has just brought an accountability and an expectation of winning GB has not.

They are a solid team and horni is better than opponents think-- like Stanzi, but yes Stanley is super. It might sound preposterous but I think we might have a better shot at psu than wisc.

I’m thinking B1G announced this a night game before the season. Won’t matter the records. BTN or Espn loves them some Kinnick at night vs top teams.
Glancing at the schedule I don’t see a top 10 matchup or any real meaningful game. Besides basic SEC matchups or Neb at Mich.

I see lefty is drowning in kool-aid

The offensive line should be pretty good, but it’s not as if it was a juggernaut last year. They allowed too much interior pressure. Deiter will likely move back inside to his more natural position of guard, which should help to resolve the penetration issue, but will also leave a first time starter manning LT.

Jonathan Taylor is a stud, but no other RB on the roster has proven to be anything other than average yet. Alec Ingold is the only FB that has played a snap.

WR unit should be fantastic. Plenty of depth there too. TEs should be a nice mix of veterans and talented youth, but certainly not as potent as the Iowa tandem.

Hornibrook is Hornibrook. No doubt he will have his ups and downs. Chryst does outstanding work with QBs and Alex is a hard worker, so hopefully he shows continued improvement.

DL starters are solid, but there’s no proven depth. OLBs are similar. ILB group is outstanding top to bottom.

D’Cota Dixon is a great leader and player in the secondary. Donte Carriere-Williams had a nice rFr season at CB. There is talent at the other CB and Safety spots, but I expect a lot of inconsistency.

Kinnick has been kinder to UW than most other programs, but there’s no doubt it will be a big challenge to escape with a W. I suspect that if Brian Ferentz is able to set the tone early in the passing game against a young secondary, Iowa should have a real solid shot at winning. If not, then I expect that the UW offense should be able to take advantage of the inexperienced Iowa LBs and put enough points on the board to get the W. I will be there and hope to see a great game at a great venue

With where we sit today clearly Wisky as a lot fewer questions than we do. Once this game rolls around who knows. I sure didn’t see us playing as well as we did against PSU last year based on how we played the year previous in happy valley. While I don’t see the raw talent with the badgers like PSU had I expect them to be very good.

Best case as has been stated is to have a repeat of PSU in Kinnick but being able to make one more play at the end.

Alvarez expectations vs Barta expectations
Does Alvarez give out bonuses starting at 6 wins?

Wow. Blocked that one out of my mind apparently
Puffs chest.... Iowa state. They are amazing, just ask them.

Hey they did beat Oklahoma there and TCU at home. Ridicule if you will but they did it. We maybe need to think twice about constantly downplaying them as that does Iowa no good either. Are they Alabama, hell no, but LSU is not some giant monster that can't be beat.

I will never respect moo U and I'm sure as hell not going to act like they have a decent football program. LSU could go on a 6 day bender and would piss pound ISUck 90% of the time.

Well said and have to agree.. Wisconsin has proven over and over they took the next step and they will be damn good again this year but... I think it’s Iowa’s time to put a knot on top of their cheese heads for once
