Journey fell in the rankings because she simply did not play this past summer while rehabbing from her knee injury. Rankings are subjective, in nature, and if not seen, the fall was expected. Journey is a kid who gives max effort, relies on deceptive quickness and shear determination to impact the game. Her offensive skills, as it pertains to shooting, overall, were and will continue to be a work in progress. She certainly could have used another summer on the club circuit with her Attack team that would have further developed her skills, but it just didn't happen for circumstances out of her control. Journey, because of this setback, may not (with hesitation) be the impact player we hoped she would be as a freshman. But, this kid has the motor, the drive, determination to be great that every coach would want in a player. She will rebound and run the floor at a high level. She will guard and she knows her strengths. Getting her to be a double digit scorer at the next level, if that is what she needs to be, will the question yet to be answered.
Journeys first game of the season is December 3 at Clinton. Now north does have a scrimmage game at Prairie on November 22, 7:30 PM if people in that area want to go watch. I plan on making pretty much all the games, I will keep you updated the best I can. I’m sure along with a few others. Excited to see how she plays. I hope she outplays her teammate Bourrage but that’s probably doubtful since journeys just coming back from knee surgery. But it would be nice :).

Just going by the classes with only 3 signed players, it's hard to see any of them rated above Iowa. Maybe there was some personal bias in there.
Illinois just picked up their fourth 4-star today: 6-2 Naomi Benson from Ohio. The fifth recruit is from Australia and not ranked for that reason, but she is considered the best shooter in Australia.

With last year’s 5-star (currently injured) Berry Wallace, maybe Illinois can give Iowa some competition in the future. Iowa is the model program to shoot for.

Illinois is going to be very good soon, I think they have a terrific coach.

Tennessee just got another top recruit as well.

This one adds to their already #3 2025 class which might get them to #2 and jump Stanford?

Since they're already ahead of us, we won't drop a spot.

I still think since Hawkbuck didn't give us an outlier report about Journey Houston a few days ago that we didn't know about, we're right around #4 yet. There's no way that I can see, at these point, that Houston dropped from #19 to #95 on ESPN just because of her injury.

I still haven't bought into Addie Deal dropping coz of her injury also.

ASGR currently has the following rankings for our players which I believe Deal and Houston s/b higher.
Deal - #17
Hays - #24
Houston - #40

That being said, I believe we're closer to being #4 (where NC is) or #5 when compared to the Jr All Star rankings article above.

I'm sure this will change again soon as more top rated recruits make their selections in the coming days, weeks or months.

Seems IL just picked up another top 100 recruit as well which place them right around us now also.
Destiny Jackson (ESPN #25 / JAS #28)
Cearah Parchment (ESPN #40 / JAS #64)
Manuella Fernandes (ESPN #59 / JAS #45)
Naomi Benson ESPN #98 / JAS N/A / (ASGR #89)
Erica Finney (Australia)

Another team ranking list just came out.

Wow, UCONN has certainly fallen. Probably not the whole story there but then at #11 seems odd.

All he needs to do is get caught in some kind of scandal and then he can easily recruit the Kim Mulkey types to reload.

All joking aside, Geno did get the No. 1 player in the class of 2024 with Sarah Strong and my early hunch is the No. 1 player in the class of 2026, Olivia Vukosa, is UConns to lose right now. Saw an interview with her and UConn was one of the 5 schools she was in contact with the most. No mention of Iowa so the likelihood to get her is probably not good. Now that we have Heiden and Hays, she's probably not a big priority to us and why not much contact with her.

Regarding your point, I think that there is some truth to it. It is odd that UConn hasn't been talked about a lot. I think that's just because UConn does not put out a lot of offers. They're use to getting whoever they want when they offer and can quietly pull in the big fish. Although, maybe now Geno's age is not so attractive to these players. Like Tara VanDerveer of Stanford just retired at age 71, they may feel Geno at 70 isn't far behind. Just a guess.

EDIT:
I would also like to add two more elements that have showed up on the scene since the Geno's glory days.
1) AAU ball has blossomed over the last decade creating a greater pool of more talent (ie Iron sharpens iron)
2) NIL is such a wildcard now that it can create a super team overnight to steal the big dawg's thunder

I think more than anything UConn has seen other programs elevate to their level in the last several years, UConn can still get good classes but they can no longer dominate WBB recruiting like they did in the past, Top players used to see UConn as the ultimate destination for a legit chance to play for National Championships now several schools have kicked that door down.

One other thing that should be noted in fairness to UConn is the past few years they have had some serious injury problems that have likely derailed their chances of winning another title.

Maybe Illinois finally has a coach that can recruit very well, it seems so.

I don't follow recruiting that much, but I thought UConn had 5 or 6 good players sitting out last year because of injury, and they still made the Final Four, so if they are all back they will be there in the end IMHO.

UConn up 20 pts. In the 3rd vs #14 UNC. Yeah, don't think they are going anywhere. They will get whoever they want.

Big Ten is going to be so competitive going forward. Portal NIL in the mix will insure all these teams have a lot of talent. Coaching is going to be important.

*Just hope and want Iowa to somehow build on the current F4 success.

Hays commits to Iowa, will wear No. 12 in honor of former Hawkeye and fellow Alaskan Magner

“Leah Magner is my mother’s best friend,” Hays said, “and she is basically family.”

Ah, so Magner is not actually her aunt? I'd think Layla would say so if she were.

So if Feuerbach does not return, as rumored, and no one transfers out, that means Iowa still has three open scholarships for next year correct?

Hannah has the skill set to be a 4 at Iowa, she just is not confident in her shot outside 8 feet right now. I saw her play a decent amount of times in high school, and she used to let it fly from 3. Right now her best skill on the perimeter is as a driver, but teams are going to play off her to take that away. So, she needs to shoot at least 2-3 times a game from 3 so they have to come out on her which opens up her drives. She doesn't even need to make many, just shoot without hesitation.
Which is exactly what I said. (Based on her current skill set). IF she starts shooting three's and elbow jumpers and hit at least in the low 30's that would open her floor game up tremendously. To this point in her Iowa career she hasn't shown she can do that...

USC is going to be trouble going forward. I believe they had the #1 or #2 class this year and top 5 in 2025. Welcome to the new B1G for womens basketball. The left coast schools really upped the B1G's stature even more in the womens game...

Wait until Stanford, Notre Dame, and Duke are also in the conference, which will happen over the next few years. Gonna be tough.

Yepper, USC got 6 commits in 2024 and landed #1 on ESPN. On the surface looking at the ESPN rankings of those 6 players, that is probably true. However, I'm not a fan of ESPN rankings alone because they differ wildly from other ranking sites. Since I haven't compared them last year like I did this year, I'll give USC #1 spot for 2024.

However, I don't think they got a top 5 class for 2025. So far, I have only logged 1 top recruit for USC.

I have them out of the top 10 right now. There are still some outstanding top recruits to commit in 2025 that may change the final rankings.

Maybe I've missed other signed 2025 recruits for USC besides Jazzy that might make them top 5?
Do you know if they have more that just Jazzy right now?

ESPN's rankings suck in every sport.

You might need to work for ESPN….inventing new stats :)
Inventing or not, he ain't wrong lol! I wouldn't mind seeing a quadruple quad every night from Deal a year or so from now!

Can't believe they only allowed 13 pts. That's absurd. I know it's Mater Dei but still, that's crazy.

PrepGirlsHoops still has Addie listed at #1 in CA.

This was written between 12/21/23 (injury date) and when she started playing summer ball again. She had a Grade 3 sprain.

California High School Girls Basketball 2025 Player Rankings
"Addie is the real deal and we expect her to improve alot after this season, she is currently sitting out due to an injury, but she is so good that her spot at #1 is not a surprise for anyone. I watched this kid as a 7th grader play UA 16U and was the leading scorer on the team at her yioung age, which is very hard to do if you are a young player, but she made it look easy and is still doing so. She is definitely a McDonalds All-American next season, Mater Dei will make sure of that."

Found this where Linder said she was going to be back for summer ball when she committed to Iowa.

Iowa women’s basketball lands 5-star guard from California / Jeff Linder
"Deal suffered a season-ending ankle injury Dec. 21. She will be ready for club season in the summer."

Went searching for how her summer ball went just to see how she was doing since coming back and found some great news here.

From the Wootten Camp about Addie Deal and Lara Somfai / Dated 9/28/24
He called it the "BEST OF THE BEST".

Lara Somfai is rated #2 on ASGR. At one point, Addie Deal was a #2 also after her injury according to 247Sports.

It seems Addie is back or close to where she once was prior to her injury on 12/21/23. She might even be better now according to what came out of the Wooton Camp a couple of months ago. Sounds like this Hawaii blowout is confirmation of it as well.

Journey is progressing to the point where it sounds like she can play her first game on Dec 3. Looks like she isn't physically 100% yet but sounds close to it. We'll see how long it takes her to gain the trust back. Need to wish this young lady back to full health and to have a very productive season.
