Wasilla Volleyball Star Layla Hays Named Alaska Athlete of the Week [in Volleyball] - 11/16/24
"Layla Hays of Wasilla High School earned the title of Alaska Athlete of the Week after an impressive performance in the Class 4A state volleyball championship, where she recorded 23 kills and 9 blocks. Her contributions were pivotal in securing a victory against South High, allowing the Warriors to clinch their second consecutive state title."
Her foot injury is fully healed now and she sounds tough as nails like Hannah and Syd playing on one good knee.
"After breaking her foot in February, Hays toughened it out and didn’t miss a game. She basically played on one leg at the state tournament, and accumulated a total of 25 points, 33 rebounds and 10 blocked shots in three games.
After the season, she was among 26 players nationally to receive an invitation to a Team USA U18 tryout in Colorado but pulled out early after reaggravating her foot injury.
She’s all good now – especially after a weekend trip to Iowa City, where she took in a basketball event Friday and football game Saturday. At the game, she wore a T-shirt that read: I’m home, Go Hawks."
