Iowa WBB 2025 Recruiting Thread

This would have been a tough year for Bluder to navigate as well. It sure would be interesting to know what she would be doing differently.

Jensen would probably never mention it, but I'd guess they have had coaching conversations this season. Would surprise me more if they didn't. They are too close as friends.

I think it was this summer Jensen was saying Lisa was trying to give her space as the new head coach but she was actually wanting Lisa to come to some practices and hear her thoughts. Don’t know how much this ended up happening, just that there was one practice they invited Lisa back to watch this summer. They’re both clearly two classy women who I think most parents would feel good about sending their daughters to play for.

Addie Deal's high school was rated #16 nationwide at the beginning of the season and now sits at #3. The only two teams rated above them now are the teams the Monarchs have their two losses. One of those teams is #1 Mitty, McKenna Woliczko's team.

"3. Mater Dei (CA) (16-2 – 3rd)
Mater Dei was rolling before losing 59-42 to Mitty [#1] in the Nike TOC semifinals, and it's done nothing but roll since. After beating Bullis 72-57 for third place, it's blown out Oakland Tech, Bishop Montgomery, Windward, and Corona Centennial."

Thanks for posting
Johnston Iowa is ranked #15
Pretty cool 😎

After a 3 game losing streak, had to find some feel good material to digest. I find it hard to believe that it's so hard to find stats to some of these high school games. Here's what I found for the most recent games of our 2025 recruits.

Journey Houston (Iowa) in a 74-40 Davenport North win over Sterling:

"CHAMPIONSHIP RIVALRY Rematch- Wasilla hosted Colony in a rematch of the State title game last March. Layla Hays (Wasilla 25’/Iowa commit) led the charge with a 55-41 win."

Best I have is Addie is team captain and iirc, Deal's team has 6 blowout wins in a row now with this game. I waited several days for a sportswriter to release main player stats on this game, but found nothing on it so far.
"Our @materdeigirlsbasketball team defeated Lynwood HS 70-30 in the last game of the @denningkayyowshowcase !!"

Maybe someone has accounts to these social media platforms to see more comments that may display player stats.

EDIT:
Finally got some kind of stat 3 days later.
Orange County girls basketball Top 25: ... Mater Dei remains No. 1 heading into the Trinity League.
"1. Mater Dei (17-2): Addison Deal scored 19 points and Amaya Williams added 13 in a 70-30 victory against Lynwood at the Matt Denning/Kay Yow Showcase."

That’s the question. There is a pretty strong sentiment among people who have seen her play that she doesn’t really have a natural position at the college level, barring a huge improvement in shooting the ball.
I think she will be a pretty natural 3 after a year at Iowa. She stopped growing after being a post for years. Her sister was more of a guard from the time she was first playing. Journey had been a post.

Addie Deal makes a Watchlist for National Player of the Year '24-'25!

"Congratulations to senior captain & @iowawbb commit @addie.deal on being on the @maxpreps National Player of the Year watchlist for the 24-25 season!! #TheRealDeal #GoMonarchs"

High school girls basketball: MaxPreps National Player of the Year watch list
"Addison Deal, Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.)
6-0 | Guard | Senior | Iowa
A point guard with a shooter's touch and size and strength to finish in traffic, the future Hawkeye is averaging 19.4 points, 7.2 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 2.8 steals per game for nationally-ranked Mater Dei. The Monarchs are 17-2 with a pair of wins over teams ranked in the MaxPreps Top 25 at the time of the game."

Btw, they're on a 7-game blowout streak. Again, no stats yet but they're pulverizing teams lately.
Hopefully her team captain leadership fills a hole we currently have this year.

Addie Deal is a McDonald's All-American Nominee (+ she currently has a high probability of being one of 24 playing in that game)

McDonald's All-American nominees: 18 California high school girls basketball players eligible for April game
"The game will include a boys and girls game where two rosters of 12 players will compete in an East vs. West showdown.

California had 18 girls basketball players nominated. Of course, just a few will be chosen. The players with the highest chance of playing in the game are Addie Deal, Grace Knox and Aliyahna “Puff” Morris."

Btw, Addie's team is on a 8-game blowout streak. The pulverizing continues...
"@materdeigirlsbasketball teams traveled to @jserra.girlsbasketball today for our 2nd league game of the year. Our varsity team won 79-37 and our JV team won 51-28!! Our Lady Monarchs are off to a great start!!"

Addie Deal shared in point leader with 15 points and she also had 7 rebounds.

I hope she comes in and takes a leadership role alongside Guyton.
Gotta remember though the competition level is better at the college level.
May take a bit to adjust.

Journey Houston is also a McDonald's All-American Nominee.

Sounds like Journey is making even more headway in her return from injury.

Five Iowa girls earn nominations for McDonald’s All-American
Divine Bourrage, Journey Houston, Libby Fandel, Amani Jenkins, Ava Zediker all nominated
"Houston is shooting 58 percent from the field, averaging 18 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists a night. She is also an 80 percent free throw shooter."

Last year there were over 375 senior girls in the country who were McDonald’s AA nominees. The year before, Kennise Johnson was one of seven players from her team to get nominated.

Was her team stacked with talent? 375 nominees averaged to about 7 per state. Certainly large population states would have more, but still, 7 on one team?

She went to a basketball academy. But my point was sort of the opposite. In terms of identifying elite or even good college players, being a McDonald’s AA nominee means very little. It’s a PR game that coaches, administrators etc. play.

Speaking of Kennise, at one time it was thought she might be ready to go at mid-season. Has anybody heard anything lately? Possible red-shirt?

I would think that with Syd leaving and maybe/probably Kylie, Houston would be an option at guard or small forward? Maybe TP can help on this.
Seen her play several times. I don’t think she can shoot the outside shot. She is athletic but she is not an outside shooter, IMO. She would benefit from a fast game and using her athleticism to drive to the basket, but I look at the problems of this current team and don’t feel she does anything different.

We need to focus our recruiting on the slashing type players. #1: It's easier to teach a slasher how to shoot a 3 than it is to take someone like McCabe and turn her into a shot creator. Watching CC's WNBA games revealed countless players who could drain 3's that were 6'3" athletic types...you know they didn't shoot many 3's in college.
#2: Slashers are almost always going to be more athletic which translates into better defensive potential.

Your WNBA research may also tell you that those players are not easy to find (and get).
Iowa HAS been trying to land some of these players.

Deal's team is now on a 9-game blowout streak. Game Stats: 13 points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals

"Addie Deal (@addie.deal), an Iowa-bound senior at Mater Dei High in California, contributed 13 points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals in a 61-39 girls basketball victory against Windward School of California at the inaugural Royals MLK Showcase at Rosary Academy in California. Deal had 20 points in a 65-49 triumph Dec. 30 against Windward to lead the Monarchs to the Platinum Division title at the West Coast Jamboree at Dublin High in California. Mater Dei, which won its ninth game in a row, relied on scoring 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to pull away from Windward in the rematch."

Deal's team is now on a 10-game blowout streak after today's 77 - 35 win. Back to crushing opponents again!

Still awaiting full stats, but I'll take 24 points for now. Breaks out of her minor slump the last few games of 13 and 15 points.
"Mater Dei 77, Orange Lutheran 35: Addie Deal had 24 points for the Monarchs."

Btw, Addie's game stats from yesterday's game are posted in prior post now along with her interview after the game. She had 13 points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals in a 61-39 victory over Windward.

"Our @materdeigirlsbasketball teams defeated @olugirlsbasketball today at Mater Dei!! Great job monarchs, keep up the great work!! Varsity: MD 77-35 OLU"

3 of 5 regular season games they have left are against teams they already crushed badly. Next 2 games could be more of challenge than their current 10-game blowout streak.

Sounds like Addie Deal's team isn't the only one blowing teams out!

Now that's a winning formula... "playing an up-tempo game with intense defense.”

Undefeated Wasilla girls are unanimous No. 1 in ASR/Class 4A Coaches Poll

"Nobody is surprised by the 6-0 start of the Wasilla girls basketball team.

But what’s wild is the Warriors’ 33-point margin of victory isn’t even really a shocker because the defending state champs are that good.

But don’t take my word for it. Take it from opposing coaches, who were unanimous in their conclusion after Wasilla received all 14 first-place votes in this week’s Alaska Sports Report/Class 4A Coaches Poll.

“The Warriors are off to a good start, playing an up-tempo game with intense defense,” said Wasilla coach Jeannie Hebert-Truax, who is closing in on 600 career wins.

No surprise, the player leading the way is Layla Hays. The 6-foot-5 University of Iowa signee ranks fourth among 4A girls in scoring (19.8 ppg) while also grabbing a dozen rebounds and blocking a couple shots per game."

Addie Deal predicted to make McDonald's AA team, but toward the bottom of the group according to World Exposure Report. Deal is a "4th round pick", with Skinner and Speiser being "1st Round Picks", and McGaughy being a "3rd Round Pick." Not vouching for this, just passing it along.

Addie Deal makes another prediction where she is 1 of 24 selected. Found 4 differences from the worldexposurereport above.

Predicting the McDonald's All American Game girls selections
Ahead of Monday's announcement, here are the 24 players we expect to be in Brooklyn.
"Today, we try to get into the mind of the committee and predict the 24-player roster from the more than 400 nominees."
"Addison Deal, Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.)
6-0 | Guard | Iowa"

13 are guards. Seems like a lot

I believe worldexposurereport touched on this movement away from posts and/or bigs to guards. However, it's something to note. I've been watching this for a while. Coaches need to pay attention. Fast ball movement is key, imho.

From worldexposurereport article:
"THERE IS ALWAYS A POSITIONAL BALANCE
If we consider each class to feature 24 players, it has normally featured the following structure:
12 Guards, 4 Wings, 6 Forwards, and 2 Centers.

(Prior to 2023:
5 PGs, 6 SGs, 4 SFs, 6 PFs, and 3 Cs.)"

Meaning:
After 2022: 6 Forwards, and 2 Centers (8 bigs)
Prior to 2023: 6 PFs, and 3 Cs. (9 bigs)

Would not be surprised if 13 guards make it. Think it depends on the height of the guard and how many positions they can play. Ex: Zakiyah Johnson is a 6" - 6'1" guard and forward. Addie Deal 6' primarily a guard that can play positions 1-3 and maybe even 4 if needed. These girls are playing so much basketball year around now on different squads that they're interchangeable in several positions depending on what the team needs.

Going back to worldexposurereport. They even buck the trend even more by only projecting 1 post.
FINAL 2025 MCDONALD’S ALL-AMERICAN GAME ROSTER
After all, this is what we have come up with:
  • Point Guards (5): No. Hailee Swain, Mia Pauldo, Aaliyah Chavez, Emilee Skinner
  • Shooting Guards (6): No. Nyla Brooks, Divine Bourrage, Addison Deal, Jasmine Davidson, Jordan Speiser, Aaliyah Crump.
  • Small Forwards (7): No. 10 Zakiyah Johnson, Deniya Prawl, Jaida Civil, Darianna Alexander, Grace Knox, Ayla McDowell, Kaelyn Carroll
  • Power Forwards (5): Leah Macy, Madison Francis, Brynn McGaughy, Jaliya Davis, Lara Somfai
  • Centers (1): No. 3 Sienna Betts
Notice also they only project: 5 Power Forwards and 1 Center (only 6 bigs). Compare that bigs count to the bigs count above of 8 & 9.

If there's only 1 post selected, that means one team is without a center. So much for "THERE IS ALWAYS A POSITIONAL BALANCE." I must be misunderstanding what they really mean here or else they didn't listen to their own rule or whatever rule they're referencing. Maybe someone can correct my on what I'm missing here.

Also notice maxpreps only projects: 3 Forwards and 2 Posts (5 bigs). Compare that bigs count to the bigs count above of 8 & 9.

We'll see what happens with the selection committee on Monday regarding these position counts.

Anyways, this doesn't surprise me now that worldexposurereport only projected 1 post and maxpreps projected 13 guards.

Deal's team crushes another opponent and is now on a 11-game blowout streak after Friday's 74 - 42 win.

Addie almost gets a triple-double!
"#Iowa bound @deal_addie 16 pts, 12 reb, eight assists"

Did not know how this game would turn out as this team is out of Nevada and no common opponents to gauge it. Bishop Gorman is rated #3 in Nevada so I was thinking this game might be closer than it turned out.

"@materdeigirlsbasketball team defeats @bishopgormanwbb tonight 74-42 in the prestigious @nikeextravaganza !!"
