Iowa women up to #2

oh-my-god-its-happening.gif

Depends on what narrative the sports media wants to spin. Iowa deserves the #1 spot. Did anyone else find the ESPN plus announcers calling todays game annoying? Nothing worse than a couple of "homers" on the Iowa vs UNI broadcast.

Have the Iowa women ever been ranked number 1? I see they were ranked number two for 8 weeks in 94.

Edit:

I see they were ranked number 1 for 8 weeks straight in 1988 too.

I mean it was the Panther broadcast network and the color guy is a former assistant there. Kinda expected it. Same when Iowa is on BTNplus.

Hawks likely takeover #1 though South Carolina probably has the two best wins so far defeating #10 Notre Dame by 29 & #14 Maryland by 38.
Could be a coaches-media split. Will be interesting. Can make a reasonable case for both. I watched both of South Carolina's games, and you can't fault someone who votes South Carolina # 1. They are loaded. Still hoping the Hawks are # 1, even if it might not last.

My guess is that it will be very close with Iowa/South Carolina.

Unfortunately, Iowa will likely not get any help from its voting beat writer Jeff Linder from the CR Gazette. Jeff has consistently voted Iowa lower than how the poll ends up over the past several seasons.

South Carolina blew out Maryland. Dawn will say it’s racist if her team doesn’t move to number 1.

Dawn likes using the race card. She tried dragging Lisa Bluder's reputation into the mud after Lisa completely outcoached her.

From a postgame story:

While Dawn Staley was not thrilled about South Carolina’s Final Four loss to Iowa on Friday, the legendary coach was also not happy about the ongoing negative labels attached to her basketball program.

Prior to Friday’s game, Iowa head coach Lisa Bluder referenced someone who described going up against the Gamecocks for rebounds was like “going to a bar fight. Staley did not take kindly to those remarks. After Friday’s defeat, she addressed the stereotypes regarding her team’s physicality and style of play, something that has been a topic of discussion the entire season.

“We’re not bar fighters,” Staley said, per the Greenville News. “We’re not thugs. We’re not monkeys. We’re not street fighters. I do think that that’s sometimes brought into the game, and it hurts.”

Jeff voted Iowa # 3 pre-season, and South Carolina # 11 (tied for the lowest South Carolina vote I could find [I found rankings by 33 of the 36 voters]. Will be interesting to see how his votes change this week.

Edit: On a similar note, Bill Fennelly is a voter in the coaches poll. Only Big Ten coach voter is Coquese Washington, Rutgers.

Yeah, she was looking for an issue.
White people get in bar fights too. Lol

While South Carolina is the most talented team, we’ve beaten a top 10 team on a neutral site and UNI, while not ranked, is predicted to be top 2 in the Valley and we beat them by 40 at their place. Their game today was at home but dropping over 100 is impressive. We’re 3 games into the season so it’s not that important but it’s nice to be number 1!

I think we are ranked number 1. Not like we didn't beat them last year. Didn't see them in the NC game.
* They were more talented last year too, until they weren't. 😆

What would last year have to do with anything?
Ohh, nothing. You know, like rankings never have anything to do with the previous year.
In case you didn't notice we are ranked 3 and they are 6 and 4. Obviously last year had something to do with rankings.

Of course other then the bar fight. Bluder NEVER said any of those things. Just more of the "oh look how badly we're treated, and discriminated against". This right here is one of the MAJOR reasons why we still have a racial divide in this country. People like Dawn who play the race card when its absolutely not warranted. Its sickening, and tiresome....

It will be Iowa. We are #3. We won 2 road games. I know it was in Charlotte but last time I checked that's just a bit closer to Virginia than Iowa.

I would guess we are #1, South Carolina is #2. We will get a little credit for (hopefully) smacking Kansas St. this week too.

They were not more talented whatsoever. They just had tall players who can only make layups when being guarded by a girl 8 inches shorter than her. Also any decent coach would’ve won the natty at SC last year

It was sarcasm on the more talented part. Hence, until they weren't.

SC is even more dangerous this year since they found some snipers and drain 3s like crazy. Plus they still have monstrously tall women. Will be interesting to see how things develop.

But not a solid # 3. Regarding the AP poll, 18 of the 33 ballots available on the AP site had Iowa lower than # 3 (3 of 36 ballots were unavailable). Far from automatic that those 18 voters vote Iowa # 1. 15 voters had UCLA above Iowa. Wonder if UCLA or Utah get any # 1 votes.

Did they play anyone like UNI or VT? I get the Iowa hate is real. I get they think it's the CC show but what many don't get is that right now, we have some very good complementary pieces that simply do their job really well. Nobody cares about that, though.

Not sure being ranked 3 this week shows any disrespect. Pretty much every game we play is on ESPN or a major network. We’ve got a really good team and we’ll probably be ranked 1. If not 2. Not sure voters hate us.

UCLA will have to get through Colorado, USC, & Utah twice plus @ Stanford & Ohio State. There's a home game against UCONN as well. They'll certainly have the opportunity to prove they're a title contender.

Sc beat notre dame and marryland. So Thierry wins were bigger and against better schools if you factor in only 3 members of last year's team on va tech roster.

Don't think any Big Ten team has been ranked # 1 (AP) for even 1 week since Purdue in 1999 (ranked # 1 four weeks, including final AP poll). Penn State also ranked # 1 for 3 weeks in '94 as Big Ten member. Think Iowa, Purdue and Penn State are only Big Ten teams ever to be ranked # 1. OSU has 8 seasons of making it to the top 5, but never # 1.

I guess I was responding to the pollsters who had us much lower than 3 because they think we are a one player team. That's all.
