Iowa women up to #2

Didn’t go over my head, it wasn’t funny. Just stop. You sound like the typical aggrieved white man.

I don't think he's saying that SC is first. It's that person who voted that Iowa is 7th.

Or... that he was joking.

He was stooping to the same level as the person he says plays the race card. Pointless and unnecessary.

We all know Lisa Bluder made a comment that going up against South Carolina was like going into a bar fight. Dawn Staley, of course, then played the race card, saying that her team was not bar fighters, not monkeys, not thugs, etc.

I think it's pretty clear to most of us (except InsaneHawk & Tylerl_28) that the following posts that were made in this thread were all jokes based off of what Staley said.

South Carolina blew out Maryland. Dawn will say it’s racist if her team doesn’t move to number 1.

Iowa is #2, SC jumped to #1.

Iowa got (13) first place votes, (21) second, (1) fifth, and (1) seventh
So Caro got (23) first, (10) second, and (3) thirds

5th & 7th??!!
If those voters had placed them no lower than 3rd, Iowa's 869 would be 875, and a fair bit closer to SC's 884

Don’t stoop to Dawn’s level. SC is a legit team.

personally, I want to know what kind of monkey business is going on with these voters

;)

Would you like to get in a fight at a bar with some of them?

Your history of racism on this site during the George Floyd death and subsequent protests is well known and I am sure you will now run back and delete your posts like you often do and then deny everything.

Any other lies you want to tell? You have a history of this, where you lie and then get caught in your lie. You're nothing but a troll.

If you don’t make thinly veiled racist jokes, people won’t call you out. It’s simple.

If you don’t make thinly veiled racist jokes, people won’t call you out. It’s simple.

Other posters and I were making fun of Dawn Staley making everything about race. She got outcoached by Lisa and what did she do? She started talking about race when the fact of the matter was she got outcoached. The officials in the National Championship game were only 88% accurate; an independent person said the accuracy was worse than 88%. And how did Dawn respond? She brought up the officials' race.

It's simple but I guess some people like you have to find OUTRAGE in everything.

More racism from the board's KKK leader.

You can take the Klan member out of Burlington, but can't taken the Klan out of them.

You said what follows on page 1 of this thread.

So, by your stupidity, this makes you racist.

Dude. Can we for once leave race out of it FCS. And Im Black. Just stop bro.

Dawn has brought that on herself.

has brought what on herself?

People assuming she will bring race into any equation.

Hell, it was just last week she said we shouldn't criticize the refs in the natty game because they were women of color.

There is absolutely no reason to ever make a joke using the word “monkey” the way you did JFC.

Why dont you ask Hannah, Kennise, Jada, Raina, Gabbie or Tania if they think it's funny? How do you think that would go? I don't think anyone else on the team would think it funny either.

Stop embarrassing all of us.

Again, it was in response to when Dawn implied that Lisa Bluder was racist. Lisa said playing South Carolina was like going to a bar fight. Dawn replied, saying that they are not bar fighters and not monkeys.

Lisa Bluder is obviously not racist and Dawn was completely out of line....

Like Tyler wrote above, Dawn brought this ridicule on herself.

How can you not see this?

JFC, indeed

It doesn’t matter the intent. You made a joke about this using that word yourself. It’s not clever. It’s not cute. It’s tired. At best it’s corny, at worst it’s hateful. I get that you didn’t intend for it to be racist. I get that you dont like Dawn Staley. I am very familiar with what went down last season. None of that excuses that you made a joke using a racial epithet bc you thought you were above it. You’re not. And you’re not funny, no matter what your high school friends told you. Delete your comment, if not your profile. Do better. Be better. You’re always gonna be called out if you don’t.

That is immaterial. Stop using what Bluder said and what Staley said as an excuse for the fact that YOU MADE A JOKE USING A RACIST WORD.

You can talk about Dawn Staley all you want (though that would be annoying, please don't). But when you yourself use that word, YOU become the problem. Do you really not get that? You're literally doing what SO MANY PEOPLE (relentlessly) claim that Iowa fans and coaches do. Is it really so difficult to understand that you're playing RIGHT into the hand they've dealt you? YOU are perpetuating this very real, very unfair problem plaguing this program -- by doing exactly what Staley accused Bluder of doing.

And I promise you, even if you don't understand why it's problematic (because you're from Iowa, where you can get away with making jokes like that, and no one will say something because everyone you know is white), OTHERS FIND IT OFFENSIVE. Especially kids, who grew up in a very different place and time than you did, including -- DUH -- black kids!

Make no mistake, it hurts our program -- our recruiting and our reputation -- when people like you so cavalierly act like a fool on an Iowa board or on Twitter / Instagram / YouTube. I don't care if you're a fool IRL, but don't come around here thinking it's okay to make a joke using the word Monkey as a Hawkeye fan. It's not okay.

And it hurts our program. It plays RIGHT into the stereotype that we're all racist for cheering for this team. Lisa Bluder is not racist. Most Iowa fans are not racists. But SOME certainly are, and they've given us all a bad name. And it's stuck, unfortunately. Partly because people like you keep digging in. So even if you really, truly believe that you're not racist, you're so innocent, PLEASE at LEAST do us the favor of not making this situation worse and STOP making "jokes" like that.

Ughhh!
Racist, racist, racist, racist.
All the blacks, whites, and minorities around me don't give a F about it. We just all get along.
Imagine that.

And certainly there are people in Dawn's camp, (probably herself based on her comments at several times during the final 4) who are racist also, BUT its not PC for people of color to be labeled "racist" and you know thats one of the real issues in this ongoing divide in our great country......

“Omg why don’t Lauren Betts or Aneesah Morrow want to play for Iowa?! Why doesnt everyone just want to come play with Caitlin?!”

Meanwhile anyone who paid attention during all that saw that Lauren Betts was arguing with racist Iowa fans on Twitter defending Angel Reese and Aneesah Morrow didn’t even call our Swarm CEO back. Only Einstein might wonder what happened there…

You guys reap what you sew when you endorse jokes like Fran’s or when you think anyone is going to take your side over Dawn Staley, who is one of the most respected, beloved and influential leaders in the Women’s game. Stay mad at the world for changing, see how it works out for you (us).

You sound like the one that's mad at the world.
Anyway, I got sucked in. I get you are passionate about all people being treated equal.
I commend you for that.

I get what you are saying, but she took a harmless comment and turned it into a racist shit show. Bar fight? What does that have to do with race? She used the term monkey, no one else did.
Bar fights happen all over the world by every race. Nothing to do with race. She saw an opening and took it.
Bar fights are caused by alcohol , not racism. Lol

It doesn’t matter what she said tho. Who gives a sh*t? Whining about what Staley or anyone else says is so tired. The only thing that matters is that we beat her team.

Do I think Staley made too big of a deal about the bar-fighting comment? 100%. But she was also pointing out that someone in the media called her team thugs / monkeys. She conflated them into one complaint, which was that people need to keep her team out of their mouths. And I can’t blame her for that tbh.

Do I wish Bluder was not included? Certainly. But I also wish Bluder had realized that everything she says is going to be twisted and misconstrued — any negative adjective or collective phrase to describe SC was bound to blow up when people idolize and respect a coach and program like that so deeply (and are just waiting for Bluder to say anything they can use against her). It was a rookie mistake tbh.

But does any of that bullsh*t give anyone here license to make a joke and/or make light of the word Monkey, which is very much offensive (using the phrase “money business”)? F*CK no. Fran knows what he did too and is pretty proud of himself. Says a lot about his character and again it plays right into what Staley accused Bluder of as well as what people say about our entire fanbase every day on every form of social media. These things stick and they’re not cute.

Is it okay to make jokes about white people? Seems to be pretty common and okay. Is that acceptable?
What's your take on that?

Get real. If people are going to "twist and misconstrue" the things we say, then I guess basically no one can say ANYTHING, corrrect. NO ONE needs to give Dawn Staley any opening to play her cards and to push her agenda. She has no trouble on her own, "misconstruing" as you said, things people say even innocently as was the case with Bluder into another attempt at playing the victim. You may be fine with the victim mentality, and thats your right, while some of us are tired of it. Dawn has done just fine for herself, and making shit up and playing the victim when its not warranted is petty, and small on her part.

Dawn has been subjected to racism and held down her whole life because she's black. Lol
She's a worshiped, multi millionaire, celebrity. The pain she must be feeling, Unimaginable!

If I had a vote I'd give South Carolina the #1 nod right now, they have had the most impressive performances of anyone so far.

Can anyone provide a link to someone referring to any of the South Carolina players as monkeys?

If not, it's clear that Dawn is playing the race card. If there is a certifiable reference to this terminology then:
1) I'll humbly retract that suggestion, and 2) That would be the most disgusting thing I've ever seen regarding womens basketball.

She said she overheard members of the press using the term, basically brought up what Lisa comments about baing in a bar fight, but reframed it as members of the media repeating it (maybe), and added the rest of the stuff onto it. It gave her plausible denyabilty for calling Bluder, while also referring to more offesive stuff without calling out anyone specific. Of course it is entirly possible that someone on her staff/roster actually did overhear a conversation between press members, in which case she would be 100% right. There is no way to tell, and people are likely to use there prior impression of the coach to call BS or treat it as if it is 100% in contect and true. I dont think its something we should be obsessing over, we should treat it as if whoever she was talking about was in the room and understood that it was directed at them.

LOL I am not a Swiftie. I have no beef with her but my divas of choice are Nicki Minaj and Lady Gaga. Anyway, I am indeed a 35 year-old adult male lol. I am a self-employed homeowner living in Massachusetts with a master's degree and 3 rescue dogs. If I'm indoctrinated, you can thank our beloved alma mater where I graduated with honors in political science.

BTW 35 year-olds are digital natives. We all had cell phones in HS and were texting our friends all night like annoying kids do (using phrases like omg, lol, lmao), back when a text cost a nickel. I can talk about the racists I knew growing up in rural Iowa but I think you already know about them? They're probably your friends.

IDC what you think of Staley. I'm not really a fan. All I want is for people to stop doing exactly what Staley unfairly accused Bluder of doing -- as well as what opposing fans have been tirelessly accusing us of doing -- and stop using racist language. It's not okay to use the word monkey in the way Fran did and I don't care if I piss off a bunch of small-minded people who don't get that the world has changed. We need to do better as fans. Using the word "monkey" as part of a racially charged joke on a Hawkeye forum is not being a good fan.
