Iowa women up to #2

While in the grand scheme of things you are correct

Although for fans it surely does. Everyone wants their team to be considered the best in the country, even if only in a November poll.
It's just cool to see your team ranked #1 in the polls. Just something to crow about even if it technically "doesn't matter". It's not something Iowa fans have gotten to enjoy very often. The "it doesn't matter!" crowd can stuff it!

Week 2 Power 10

1. South Carolina

What rebuild? The Gamecocks showed off their depth, versatility, suffocating defense and reloaded offense, scoring over 100pts in both contests versus two AP Top 25 foes.

2. Iowa

The triple double machine of Caitlin Clark hasn’t slowed down a bit in the Hawkeyes first two matchups against Virginia Tech and Northern Iowa. See here how her 44 points lifted the Hawkeyes over the No. 8 Hokies.

3. LSU

The defending National Champs lost to No. 20 Colorado by 14. I’m not going to drop them dramatically. They have the star-studded piece. They just need the chemistry. Next test will be Virginia Tech.

4. UCLA

The Bruins took care of business, starting 3-0. They have two tough contenders in Princeton and UConn next that will show us what this team is really about.

5. UConn

The Huskies came across a hungry, unranked team in NC State, who came in with a lot of fire paced by Saniya Rivers. Next challenge — Maryland.

6. Utah

The Utes bring back the same starting five, and chemistry has been on full display, blazing past teams with 100 plus points. Baylor is its first challenge and will help us gauge this team.

7. Virginia Tech

The Hokies lost to Iowa, but I kept VT here since Iowa was ranked higher and the matchup proved the separation. Georgia Amoore had a stellar game with 31 points.

8. Stanford

The Cardinal blew past Indiana by 34 points! Preseason All-American star Cam Brink had a monster double double with 20pts, 17 rebounds and 4 blocks. Don’t sleep on the Cardinal.

9. Notre Dame

The Fighting Irish opened up its season versus young stars who’ve been prepping to be NEXT UP. Despite the loss, I believe the Irish are a top 10 team with two Big Ten matchups that will test their resiliency on the horizon — vs. Northwestern and then vs. Illinois.

10. Ohio State

The Buckeyes lost to No. 21 Southern California. They couldn't find an answer for Juju Watkins' offense who dismantled their iconic pressure defense. However, the stars will eventually adjust to being a top 10 team that we know they can be.

My guess is that it will be very close with Iowa/South Carolina.

Unfortunately, Iowa will likely not get any help from its voting beat writer Jeff Linder from the CR Gazette. Jeff has consistently voted Iowa lower than how the poll ends up over the past several seasons.
He’s an iowa state fan,. Gag me

Jeff shared his ballot and has SC 1 and Iowa 2.

Can't really argue with SC jumping us, but a few of these voters are the difference. #7 from Cora Hall from the Knoxville News??? That is crazy! Also strange that is seems that most of the ballots haven't been updated from preseason to this week. Will be interesting to see others.

I get that you should not get passed up without a loss, but I watched both Iowa games and parts of the SC/Maryland game. SC has the same dominance in the post, added 2 point guards, and suddenly have multiple 3 point shooters. SC looks better to me than last years team, while Iowa is still trying to figure out the post. I love Va Tech long term, but they had only 3 people return from last year. So while it was a good win, it wont hold up unless they figure a lot out before playing LSU on the 30th. I think we just want to hang in the top 10 and develop the posts players.

Just gives Iowa more fuel and motivation, like how they were treated once it was determined that they'd be facing SC in the National Semifinals last season. Keep them down, and they'll just keep on trucking and you'll eventually HAVE to give them the ranking/respect that they clearly deserve.

Iowa is #2, SC jumped to #1.

You're probably right, but give it to the Hawks for a week or two. Caitlin has earned it, Iowa has earned it as a program the past several years (including beating the unbeatable SC last year). We're talking about the "eye test" right now. Iowa did plenty in the first week to jump from #3 to #1.

Iowa got (13) first place votes, (21) second, (1) fifth, and (1) seventh
So Caro got (23) first, (10) second, and (3) thirds

5th & 7th??!!
If those voters had placed them no lower than 3rd, Iowa's 869 would be 875, and a fair bit closer to SC's 884

Why can't we argue with it? What were the chances given to the Iowa women last season vs SC? What did Iowa do to get jumped by SC? Iowa should be #1

South Carolina has a 29 point win against #10 & 38 against #14. Hawks won by 4 against #8 & played Farleigh Dickinson and UNI. If South Carolina wins those games by 5, I don't think they get #1. Doesn't seem outrageous to me.

Maybe I should have worded that differently. Just saying they have a legitimate claim also. At this point, Iowa and SC are the only teams to have a strong case. If you don't think SC has a strong case, you are being obtuse. I probably should have led with the "HOW IN THE HELL DID SOMEONE RANK THEM 7th?"

Clearly, South Carolina is a great team. That said, it’s very rare in any poll that a top team gets leapfrogged by someone else if they continue to win impressively. The Hawks won what was essentially a road game against a returning Final Four team and then absolutely trucked the favorite in the MVC on the road. They did nothing to deserve getting jumped by South Carolina.

No, it doesn’t really matter at this early point in the season and Coach Bluder will be able to play the disrespect card to motivate her players, but it’s still baloney. In the vast majority of pools, winning teams move up as others ahead of them lose, unless they win ugly against a weak opponent. The Hawks have been fantastic and didn’t deserve to get edged out for #1.

Obviously SC--and every other very good team--is a much more 'complete' team than our Hawks. If we GOD FORBID lost CC to a thing-I-won't-actually-say, we aren't a top 10 team. SC could lose their top player (maybe 2) and still be top 10. UConn likely the same with Paige.
While we have solid players, we are obviously a Danny Manning team.

Per ESPN article SC just made the largest jump to #1 in poll history, figures the Hawkeyes would be the victim.
Exactly what I've been saying today. Give it to Iowa. Give it to Caitlin.... remember, the team that did have a chance to beat SC last year? Remember, the team that was a #2 seed. The team with the superstar that is making the league money and drawing in new fans. Seems to work on all other sports, but nope, this is Iowa. Iowa doesn't belong.

I think beating #9 in basically a road game in the middle of a 3 game week is as good a beating #16 and #20 comfortably at home. Iowa should be #1.
SC beat Notre Dame at home? That game wasn't even in North America LMAO.

Good god some of you have humongous victim complexes. (That comment is directed at the board in general, not just at you HFFL64.)

My bad, just looked at the designated home team instead of where it was played, where played more meaningful. Agree with abundance of victim complexes but I'm still feeling it.

They won't go undefeated. They have Utah, Conn & LSU on the schedule this year.
I don’t think they’re likely to lose to any of these teams. They can certainly get tripped but I think it more likely to happen with another typical SEC Team like in 2022 when they got upset by (a highly streaky) Kentucky.

I actually think both of their wins as well as ours are a bit inflated. Neither MD nor Notre Dame are as good as their pre-season rankings IMO and Virginia Tech isn’t either.
