Is Iowa wrestling not recruiting PA wrestlers?

Forrest is going to OK State. He has a relationship with the staff and trains there often. His mom loves the school and you always listen to the mom. If you search back 7-8 years on here I was the first one to tell you that Sasso would end up at tOSU after talking with his mom and hear her gush about the school up in Hershey Sammy's sophomore year. His dad loved Robie at Va Tech, but the mom always rules the day. It will be a major upset if Forrest doesn't end up in Stilly.

Bassett will probably be PSU or tOSU.

Commitments are open until next year but relationships are built far before that. You can get yourself in consideration but it's really difficult to overcome relationships that have been built over the years in most cases. Just like Lockett, you can generate some smoke because the kid has got to consider more than one school but he was never going anywhere but OSU.

It's 83% of the time 100% of the time.

I hear Forrest is a lock at OK State also. Not sure about Bassett? He seems open for discussion with a lot of top programs. There are a ton of other top kids out there that the Hawkeyes should be on right now. Build those relationships with those kids in 8th and 9th grade!

always awesome to hear Iowa is out on the top kids everyone wants. It's a yearly tradition anymore.

Hopefully 10 kids packaged with poisonous family, or who dont play football, or who don't want to join the military pop up in the next 4 years.

They might have a chance.

So true

You definitely want the best Iowa kids to filter in but come on man, PA kids you want as well. It's no coincidence some of the best years recently was with those Young Guns PA kids that all came to Iowa and mixed with the Iowa studs along with Marinelli out of Ohio.
A rather obvious solution is to have Spencer open a club in Western PA or NJ (recruiting hot spots on the heat map). There is good money to be made with these clubs and I can’t imagine Spencer has better business opportunities in other fields. With his knees, coaching makes more sense than tangling with elite competition.

Spencer probably would never do that because Young Guns is so prominent in Western PA. If Iowa is recruiting Western PA then they need to basically get back to getting Young Guns kids. If they are going to recruit Eastern PA then go build that relationship with Chance Marstellers club.

You are probably right, but, the club environment in NJ and NY (see heat maps) is ripe for a new sheriff. Spencer’s name precedes him and he would draw plenty of potential elites + the key element is to teach the advanced skills needed to become a National Champ. I would assume that Spencer can teach. Heading off to a new mega-fertile world is what Cael did. Spencer can do it too if he is willing to leave his cocoon.

Why is their just an assumption that M2 is automatic PSU? The club has a ton of kids. Too many for just one school. They care about the kids. They want the kids at a good program, with alot if exposure. Try to breakthrough.

Not only that, but you have someone like Simcox going to North Carolina. Manville to ASU. Not saying they will end up being absolute studs in college, but look at their results. It seems like Iowa is only in the game once a kid is an established stud. It's too late by then. You're competing with 20 other teams.

Thanks to some good media outlets in PA, you can find all the info pretty easily.

Iowa would benefit from having a recruiting coordinator. Lee Pritts of ASU could be a good fit.

Since you're new, a few tips first. Put on your thick-skinned suit, turn up your sarcasm meter, be aware there is an Ignore Poster button somewhere, and just have fun in this place, which is known as the Cesspool. There are alot of very knowledgeable wrestlers/fans in here, albeit with different opinions and alot of chaff to sift through. To your question, the biggest problem with a PA pipeline is, well, the PSU juggernaut. Hard for anyone to get elite PA kids out of PA. And in general, we are struggling to get very many elite kids from any state. Some believe we need all new coaching staff, some think at least new assistants, some focus on the need for better training methods, some think everything will be just fine in (another) year or 2 with only minor tweaks. You'll find muliple threads in here debating all this, ususally intermixed with political or religious debates. Oh yeah, if you want to call someone a moron, it is spelled moran in here. Welcome aboard.

The ones who feel everything will be fine in a year or two are the most consistent. They’ve felt this way for a decade.

Sure, they can't send them all to PSU but they sure can not send any here. That is pretty easy to do for a club coach.

Spencer is the only Pennsylvania kid we have landed that PSU wanted. Otherwise it has been solid to great wrestlers that were not good enough to be important to PSU. So, no I don't think that recruiting Pennsylvania is that important. Keeping a tie to young guns is important. Just like any other elite club.

Keeping a tie to Young Guns is basically recruiting Pennsylvania. I don't know, I think Murin, DeSanto, Kem Dawg, and Young had a significance on Iowas success as well.

Statistics have shown that PA wrestlers have the most overall success. A big part of that IMO is they grow up with top end competition and also they are more technically advanced. They tend to have a well stocked and diverse tool box of skills that includes proficiency in mat wrestling and scrambling ability which are two things we struggle with and two things that in state kids generally do not excell at. Those guys you mentioned that PSU didn't want were still better performers for us than guys we brought in from elsewhere.

Forget about PA kids and start thinking of how to raise the level of elite kids in Iowa. I'll start by donating a handsome amount to iowa youth wrestling if I should win the powerball billions.
Forget about just focusing on those 2 states - focus on the big board. Not rocket science. There just happen to be lots of PA guys on the big board.

It seems funny that whenever we had the 5 PA kids starting the PSU fans bitched and complained that we only beat them because we had PA kids but yet they only had 3 or 4 kids from PA as starters on their own team....Now we act like PA is the only mecca of recruits...we need Iowa to start evaluating talent BEFORE they start getting all of the top interest and accolades and start building relationships with these kids that gives them confidence and familiarity with the Iowa program so that whenever they do turn into top recruits we are not knocking on their doors and explaining that we aren't Mormons and we aren't selling Windows by Anderson.... these kids need to know we are genuinely interested in them long before everybody else is. We need more visibility and face and name recognition... Make Spencer the recruiting specialist... his name still carries a lot of clout and should only get better with the Trials success .

Iowa has a better chance of getting Bo then Jax I think. I have heard Jax is big on Oklahoma State. Put all your chips into getting Bo and watch how the dominoe happens with other top kids coming.
I know Willie is convinced Bo is a no go, but I hope we at least get an official visit. He has some relationship with Spencer and knows Angelo also. Has Iowa memorabilia in his basement training area. If we can’t get him, we will never beat PSU on another recruit they want.

This is one of the things I don't get from some Iowa fans. Not you I'm speaking of, but Starrocci had nearly twice as many high school losses as Murin. Kaleb Young have roughly the same as the Hidlays in high school. Cenzo and Kem had an amazing OT match in the state finals.

That's pretty spot on.

seems like an awful lot of eggs are being put into the "hey...come wrestle next to spencer" basket for recruiting success

Bo visits YG and M2 equally.

You should think again about how a Ferrari affects recruiting. That family has already cost your team a top p4p recruit who switched to a hated rival.

i'm not 'convinced Bo is a no go'.

i think Iowa is in play. i just don't think that it ends up being the pick.

I am surprised Iowa didn't get more involved with Conner Harer. Kid is an absolute stud and has a younger brother that took out Mason Gibson twice this year. PSU is loaded at the middle weights and Rutgers stole a good one.

I'll assume you haven't seen this recruitment video of Anthony Knox? It's 18 minutes long and will answer your question.

The first school that called him is the school he chose? Cael even called him and he still chose Cornell.
Cornell built a relationship with him since he was a freshman. They started young and built it. That's what should be happening. Start with the top Iowa kids.

I don’t disagree, Tom should be bringing it a bunch of recruits to train, even if they don’t pick Iowa to wrestle at it’s important to build the relationship and maybe we get a second shot at them in the portal.
