Is the Brands' era entering Zalesky level?

Uh no. This is Zalesky level. Maybe worse because Iowa has allowed it for so long.
Tell us you're a band wagon fan without telling us... as disappointing as last night and the last couple years have been, you clearly weren't paying attention during the last couple Zalesky years. It was faaarrrr beyond what we are right now.

One thing I will agree about the current team being compared to Z’s last years. The majority seem to be going through the motions, very little from the boys last night minus 3 guys. And going through the motions has been par for the course for a few years now

When Kem and company were the core you could feel a strong leadership within the team. I feel nothing now.

It’s weird how losing 6 upperclassman from the previous year might leave a void to be filled.

Chuck C posted the yearly records as coaches at Iowa.

Z's last 4 years had Iowa losing 19 times in dual meets, compared to only 2 losses in 4 years for Brands, not remotely close.

So, uh no.
You don’t get what I’m trying to point out. Enjoy being a 2nd class program until change is made

Don’t forget 2011-2019

It's almost of as if you need to have the foresight to recruit replacements. Those guys you're mentioning were on the roster for six years (seven for Kem). It's not like it was a surprise when they ran out of eligibility
Yeah. I’m sure u can anticipate needing to replace brands cassioippi and Assad the bulk of your senior leadership.

Iowa has (will have) the greatest facility in the world. Iowa has money for NIL. They are in the top conference in the NCAA. Iowa has been a top 5 program since 2008. Sounds pretty good to me. The only way it will get better than that is to make a coaching change. I don't think that would be wise, but it's pretty evident top 5 is where this staff will have their team.

Thanks for your service but cut all assistants after the year and I mean anyone with Assistant in their name.....dont worry they'll probably be able to get a job somewhere else. Hire some younger kids who understand how wrestling is done in 2024 and get a coach in waiting.

We’re headed for the same thing now. If you can’t see it, I got nothin for you. Tom and Terry’s shtick has gotten stale and nobody outside of Iowa City have heard of any of the rest of the wrestling staff…

not only does nobody outside of Iowa city know the assts I don’t believe anyone would be jumping at the bit to hire them. Hawks need new, young, super talented assts. Those assts were boring wrestlers and it shows on the mat.

Just another excuse.
So what’s your plan? Should the coaching staff anticipated what happened last year with gambling? Does the AD send them packing and open up a national search to replace them? Since they’ve been at Iowa they’ve been the number 2 program n the country. Who would have exceeded their results?

Yes to all of the above. Iowa wrestling shouldn’t be settling for 2nd best ever. Its #1 or bust every year. This isn’t your average team.

Again….give me a plan. You’re the AD. What are you doing? Who are you hiring? Otherwise you’re just bitching with no solution. Without gambling suspensions this team was a clear 2nd place favorite. There is risk to moving on from the Brands.

Keep Tom, replace the rest. Plenty of light weights recently graduated that could add new skills. Cox developing upper weights would be huge as well. Obviously Spencers name will be attached to Iowa for future coach.

It’s weird how there’s always a big fat excuse when it comes to Tom Brands. Simple question. Are you (and when I say you, I’m speaking to many on this board) satisfied with the job he’s doing? If not, ask yourselves why you keep pointing the finger everywhere but at the man in charge. We’ve had other assistants. We’ve had different recruits. The results (and the offensive struggles) haven’t differed much in the past 13 years. Do you really think he’s going to all of a sudden start leading this team above PSU? At this point, if you’re defending Tom, then you’re satisfied with the results or you’re a simp for him. I know he’s entertaining and he was amazing as a wrestler, but he’s not getting the job done and there’s no reason to believe it’s about to change with him in charge. That’s the truth. Take a dang risk and try a different option. If it doesn’t work, try again. Quit settling for 2nd-5th place.

No I’m not satisfied. Ultimately the responsibility is on the staff to make the changes to get better. But they’ve still been arguably the second best program behind PSU since Sanderson took over. And the options are Brands is the coach and makes changes to overtake PSU or the keep on doing what they’ve been doing and stay consistently second. You replace him is there anybody better? I’m not suggesting they be satisfied and don’t strive for first but sometimes you have to accept as a fan PSU is just better and will be for awhile.

We are definitely do for a staff shake up. I wouldn't be afraid to replace all the assistants and we need a real strength and conditioning coach with a strong knowledge of the sport. Lets also not forget what teams Zalesky won with. Them were gable teams. Tom never inherited much from Zalesky teams. We need a strong recruiting haul to get this show back on the road. I don't know what went on last night, but I still believe we will be a strong number 2 at nationals.
Heard it from ISU fans over and over back then, and it’s partially true—Tom benefitted from his double recruiting classes—had both VaTech and Iowa’s classes

We won’t know if someone is better until they try. See who’s over-achieving as a head coach and see if they’ll over-achieve at Iowa too. That’s an option. Not the only option. Could also try a recent world or Olympic champion if they’re ready to retire. Could try an assistant with a great reputation. Who knows. But try something different because Tom’s had his time and opportunities and he’s not meeting the (admittedly crazy high) standards, and hasn’t since Cael arrived at PSU.

And that’s the risk. But with the recent history of 2 likely national championships a runner up and third place finish, sold out Carver for at least 3 years,Brands and company fundraising a new facility and improved HWC funds I think the risk outweighs the benefit. There has to be a plan if you’re moving on. Not we’ll see who’s out there.

I just listed three directions. Bill Zadick a fourth option if he’s interested.

Winning 1.5 team titles in 13 years and not even sniffing the title in the other 11 of those (even when we took 2nd) doesn’t cut it. Then you look at current trajectory and it’s no better (and no, not because we’re coming off a bad performance, but because we aren’t close to PSU right now). Sold out carver, new facility, and improved hwc funds are all nice, but they’re not going to win us team titles.

I see I got the PSU crowd worked up. Looks like a bunch created a new account just to jump on here to trash talk.

I'll say it again. The guys who were suspended for gambling are all good enough to AA. Some were multi AA. When the suspensions were handed out, it was at a time the Iowa program couldn't bring someone in to replace. Those were longtime developed guys and destroyed the lineup. I'll say it again, if it was any team in the US that loses 4 possible AA out of their lineup when they can't be replaced, it'd be a long year for them. Including PSU. PSU would be in the top 5, but it'd be up in the air if they could win it all.

Exactly, you're not talking a good coach because Brands is better than good. you're talking a legendary figure capable of putting the Hawks even with PSU right now. When you look at Sanderson's advantages it goes beyond money, it's location and organization of the program. Much more than coaching, but all aspects of the sport.

That's a tall order to match.

That is the exact situation! There is NO ONE who could match the current advantages at PSU. Even if Carl were to suddenly switch places and become the head coach at Iowa it would be the same. And if you honestly examine the population densities to compare between the states of Iowa and PA etc., etc. That is why Carl left ISU hanging and went to PSU in the first place (that and of course the $$$- you might be able to tell that I will probably not ever get over his turning his back on a school that had given him so much- loyalty means a lot to me)!

Let’s give the guy some credit. ISU was doing well when he was there and had monster recruits coming in. He stays at ISU he wins multiple nattys but not the juggernaut PSU has become. He comes to Iowa it would be a game changer. He moves the needle.

I agree. Its more sbout CS than all the other things. Hes a different type leader snd communicator than our leadership. Profesdional, calm, respectful. Quite opposite of ours

It starts with Carl but if that doesn’t do it he can turn and point to how many champs hanging around the room to work out with. He’s got them from light weights through heavies. Best of the best over the last 10 years, guys on cusp of Olympics. We’ve got SL who’s amazing but beyond him? A lot of nice guys who got on the podium mid level. And all Iowa guys, and to some that doesn’t do it.

Yep, you have a geographically wrestling friendly area with a big university that had some decent wrestling success that got a legendary wrestler who turned out to be a great coach. Then this guy embraces a lot of new training and recovery techniques and you get the current PSU program. Sanderson is a Glock, he changed how things were done.

Go read the biography of Gaston Glock,. the firearms industry wasn't to happy with him but now everyone has a polymer pistol.

Losing is one thing .... being that embarrassed by the #13 team is another.

This loss feels like it did the losses endured in Z's last year.

#1 ranked Woods gets majored by a freshman.

#2 ranked Franek can't finish against a lesser opponent.

Ayala get stop a guy from hanging on him for 7+ minutes.

and so on.
I see we are playing over reaction theatre following the mich dual.

No it is not entering that level. We may slip out of a team trophy position but I think the gambling suspensions play a pretty big role in that.

Though I’m continually surprised at how many top 10 high school studs we miss out on, the team success hs been very solid despite that. Not at the level you or I or any other Hawk fan wants but we are not close to Jimmy Z years.

I would hire some younger staff to coach our team.. Spencer Lee, Tony Ramos, Brent Metcalf, Kyle Dake, David Taylor, Yianni, Jay Borschel, Matt Mcdonough are some names I would interview. Do you know what they ALL have in common? They are National Champions, something M* and Telford never sniffed.
