It’s official, DeV to Indiana

IU paid a record buyout to get DD. Terrible value. I like Iowas options.

Exactly. Lots of chicken littles watching the sky fall today.

So Indiana outbid Iowa in basketball.... what's new. They'll be the highest bidder again in 5 years.

Hopefully they get Ben McCollum, if not there are other young and hungry coaches to kick the tires on.

Agreed, IU overpaid IMO,

The sting of DD to IA falling through in the 11th hour will be minimized, if not totally negated, if we get BM. If not, it will be worrisome but trust there is somebody out there is a good fit.

Yeah I need to step away from the board. Some people have gone insane over this.

We're getting the coach we need.
Thank you for a voice of sanity in this thread. The sun will rise tomorrow even with DeVries going to the Hoosiers. Reading between the lines I have had the sense that Beth has wanted McCollum all along as her first choice. I think we get him if we make the official offer.

People seem freaked out about NIL and to me that represents just part of the picture. The turnaround starts with coaching and and engaging with the fan base to get fans and donors excited about the program again. We have revenue sharing coming and we don't know how this crazy spending on NIL will play out over time. Let's get the right coach in here and go from there.

I'll admit I'm concerned about this whole NIL thing possibly hindering the search.. But I'm not going to overreact until I see who the hire ends up being. If McCollum gets away, bad omen IMO.

All that said, I have no idea what Beth has in mind. I sure hope you're right that he is her #1 pick.

I dont think people on this board realized just what they asked for when McCaffrey was fired. Its not Beth's fault or Fran's fault. The numbers dwindled before Fran. The coming of NIL has changed the climate from amateurism to professionalism. That is what has really hurt the program. The changes that needed to be made were going to be drastic. Guy had one of his better recruiting classes coming in and we traded that for uncertainty based on our understanding of NIL. It's no reason why established coaches are walking away....things like where you are from are not as important as the type of NIL money a program has. We just dont have it.

NIL may be an issue…but did/could we really afford paying frans 4mil buyout then proceed to pay a 6mil buyout for devries? Then if that report was true he was looking for a 7mil/yr contract, that is way too steep of an asking price! Others are right, we missed the boat by not making the move last year and letting him leave the state. That said, he’s not the only option and possibly/likely not even the best option. Time will tell. But im not writing off our future NIL coffers just because the school wasn’t paying that absurd amount for DD…JMO

Well said! 👍

Yes. I think today was a defining moment for our program based on what we learned about our finances. No amount of us poor Iowa fans paying into NIL are going to change that regardless of what Rico thinks either. It takes large boosters/donations/corporations. We don't have it. That's what we learned today. We're not a competitive program any longer in a dying sport.

Michigan is buying Freeman for 1.7 million. Our entire team was apparently worth 1.5 last year with him on it. Devries couldn't compete with a reasonable request of 4.2 million in NIL. WVU is worth twice our programs worth and yet, they're gutted now. Yeah, that's pretty much it. It's uh, a sad day. Ah well. I was really hoping this hire would bring me back in the fold with Iowa MBB. Yet, it doesn't matter who'll be coaching us apparently. It's an utterly shit day.
I hear ya, man. This is what happens when an Athletic Dept. hangs on to coaches way past their shelf life. I knew Barta's stupidity and spinelessness would bite us in the ass at some point. Well, here we are.

And for the record, I think we're in for another treat when Ferentz finally gets the hell out.

Do we really know that DD was the top pick if he was making those demands? Iowa couldn’t meet them and they weren’t going to bankrupt themselves to get him.

A day ago people were already throwing him under the bus. That he couldn’t even get WVa to the tournament. Now he’s John Wooden or Dean Smith? Schizophrenic fanbase can never be satisfied.

Maybe Iowa gets who many wanted a day ago. He certainly has more leverage now.

It’s reality. Agree that Barta took the easy way out and extended Fran for no good reason.

Call me a crape hanger, but MBB at Iowa is dumpster fire with a meager NIL account. Tough row to hoe.

If this goes sideways, I know one clan, soon to be based in Indianapolis, that will never let us hear the end of it.

Just a random question for anyone that might know...it's been said that the big boosters need to make a NIL commitment to lure thenew HC.

How many "big boosters" are we talking and have they been active in other sports?

The time for Iowa to go after DeVries was last year. Instead, they chose to waste another year on Fran.

Frankly, I don’t think it’s going to matter. Iowa does not have the financial resources apparently to become competitive in basketball at a national level. DeVries or McCollum would just produce 1990s Tom Davis results.

The message is clear: A guy who once wanted the Iowa job and who appeared to be #1 on Beth’s list just passed on Iowa because the financial resources aren’t there.

Might as well shut the basketball program down and put all available resources into football.
Very well said

Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher and Tom Arnold. All in for $15K each. Tom Brokaw donated a very lightly used pool pump from his Martha's Vineyard vacation home.

And if that were to happen, talk about a self-absorbed lack of perspective. As if Fran had nothing to do with the state of Iowa basketball. He and his family would be wise to count Fran’s $4.26 million and keep their collective pie hole shut.

Don’t blame Barta or the coaches, get the checkbook out !

Who gaf what that family says. He should focus on how to coach defense and rebounding instead of paying attention to what’s going on in Iowa City.
