It’s official, DeV to Indiana

Exactly. Lots of chicken littles watching the sky fall today.

So Indiana outbid Iowa in basketball.... what's new. They'll be the highest bidder again in 5 years.

Hopefully they get Ben McCollum, if not there are other young and hungry coaches to kick the tires on.
How many Indiana players hit the portal? Now you know the difference!

Don’t blame Barta or the coaches, get the checkbook out !
No. Does anyone really believe that the University of Iowa can't afford 10 million dollars to put a good team together. NIL isn't what is going on in college sports. It's one university being willing to spend more than another university. Colleges make plenty of money, without asking a guy who works to take care of his own family to take care of their "student athletes". I buy tickets, plenty of merchandise, education for my kids. I will not pay for players. If you are going to call it NIL, let the business community pay the students for their NIL. But we all know that's not what is really happening.

Yes. I think today was a defining moment for our program based on what we learned about our finances. No amount of us poor Iowa fans paying into NIL are going to change that regardless of what Rico thinks either. It takes large boosters/donations/corporations. We don't have it. That's what we learned today. We're not a competitive program any longer in a dying sport.

Michigan is buying Freeman for 1.7 million. Our entire team was apparently worth 1.5 last year with him on it. Devries couldn't compete with a reasonable request of 4.2 million in NIL. WVU is worth twice our programs worth and yet, they're gutted now. Yeah, that's pretty much it. It's uh, a sad day. Ah well. I was really hoping this hire would bring me back in the fold with Iowa MBB. Yet, it doesn't matter who'll be coaching us apparently. It's an utterly shit day.
What difference does it make? I never spend a second living in the past! It’s counterproductive! We have a challenge and if the stop bitching and start supporting the program we might have a chance but not a 1.5 million NIL or 5,000-7,000 attendance! I remember the Lichliter years! Since 1970 Miller and Olsen (both HOF coaches) left for Greener pastures! Alford left for New Mexico! Davis and Fran were fired despite their loyalty! And Lick was fired! I don’t remember about Raveling!

I feel better, suddenly.

Wasn’t it a couple of days ago that people had IU hot after McCollum? Now they take DD. Maybe McCollum was already off the board so it was IU who actually panicked and paid a boatload to get DD. Meanwhile Goetz is smiling like the cat that ate the canary. Wouldn’t that be a great story? As long as we’re just speculating.

IU paid a record buyout to get DD. Terrible value. I like Iowas options.
Exactly right. It's not like Devries had won National titles or made Sweet- sixteens. He had a couple good seasons at Drake. Somehow, it seems everybody they hire has great seasons. This is a classic example of how fing crazy that college BB has become. In a couple of years when Indiana is still not competing for a NCAA title, he will be looking for a job. I could give him the benefit of the doubt, quitting on West Virginia to come home to Iowa. Shitting on West Virginia after one season solely for the money shows his true character. How much $$ is enough for these guys? Can't make it on 4 million? Gotta have six? Hire a Successful D2 coach and take your chances..

He also had his son, who was a good player---better than Lil LIck, CMAC, PMAC. I think that added to his Value as a head coach candidate, especially last year.

He did a pretty good turnaround this year, but did miss the tournament.

The narrative that Iowa was his dream job did sound soothing to Iowa fans and it helped his negotiating power with WVU. Indiana stepped in with Real Big money and apparently they got desperate because they'd overshot on their Top4 candidates---Indiana isn't a great desitination given their history of firing guys.

From my POV Devries was too expensive. Not a big loss, but it does highlight how much money some schools are willing to throw at MBB.

Pretty clear what happened - he was Indiana all along and he came to hear Beth out. Indiana job was open on February 7th.

The time for Iowa to go after DeVries was last year. Instead, they chose to waste another year on Fran.

Frankly, I don’t think it’s going to matter. Iowa does not have the financial resources apparently to become competitive in basketball at a national level. DeVries or McCollum would just produce 1990s Tom Davis results.

The message is clear: A guy who once wanted the Iowa job and who appeared to be #1 on Beth’s list just passed on Iowa because the financial resources aren’t there.

Might as well shut the basketball program down and put all available resources into football.
Unless you are loaded with a nearly endless stream of NIL money, it really is one or the other, if you are lucky. For many it will be neither. So, pick one….Football or Basketball.

I think Devries is a really good coach. I really question his decision to go to Indiana though. That place consistently kills good coaches much akin to Nebraska in football. He should've stayed at WVU until a better job came about. I understand the tradition of IU basketball but in terms of blue blood programs still in existence...they're about as bad as it gets. I don't even consider them one anymore truthfully but I get that a lot of people still do for some reason. He should've waited it out for a better position. Maybe MSU or something like that.
