James Resar

Why? If Resar is moving to WR, let Marco develop. His mobility alone makes him a potential huge gain for the offense, I hope he is working on throwing those out routes.
I am one of those crazy fans that doesn`t always think the backup QB is the better option. I have not heard or seen anything that makes me think ML is a good option in the long term. I hope that ML and BS prove me wrong and are great QBs moving forward but I believe they will be looking hard in the portal.

Tough choosing which is the better dead-end for a football career at Iowa - QB or WR
Before Petras, we had 4-of-5 straight starting qbs drafted in the nfl:

Stanzi
Rudock (I know he played one year at Michigan)
Beathard
Stanley

Tate had some good years. Vandenberg was top 3 in yards and tds in the B10 in 2011. And obviously Banks was a Heisman finalist.

So - prior to 2020 - there was at least a history of respectable qb play at Iowa. The wr play has NEVER been there outside of a few exceptions (ISM, DJK, McNutt)

We’re already complaining about the thing every single poster on this board predicted when Resar was still in high school?

On brand.

Good luck against the Dragons on Friday!!!
They’ll need some luck!

I believe DJK and Solomon were also high school QBs that made the switch to WR.

Also Vander Zee was a high school QB.
They were also recruited as wr's. I get that we're desperate for receivers and possibly it works out but again it's another huge reach. Nobody wants to play receiver at Iowa and catch 1-2 balls a game at max.

It isn't about thinking he's a better option currently, but there is no reason for him not to sit and hopefully develop. Now the I can fully understand the argument of Iowa's track record of developing QBs. I'd say Iowa has their QB for next year in Sullivan with Marco as the back up, the following year, then I'd agree we need a portal target. If we are spending portal money it should be on OL and DL/CBs IMO

DJK was switched similarly and Clinton Solomon was a former WR as a prep. Already have Reece converted Day 1.

Marvin McNutt was given a longer look. WR room will be better in 2025.
Solomon played QB in high school and the coaches let him begin fall camp there before moving him to WR after a practice or two. IIRC, KF said he was better than they expected at QB, but still felt he would fit best at WR.

I know we all hate him but on Rob Howe's weekly mailbag podcast he answered a question about Resar switching to WR. Apparently with journalists it's been known for a while with some whispers and he basically confirmed it.

Now it may work out in the long run but switching a QB to WR less than a year on campus is got to be yet another indictment on the Ferentz Family QB evaluations.
I don’t think you have the information to make that judgement.

Kirk and company have recruited numerous high school QBs with plans to move them to other positions. Typically it has been WR (several guys mentioned in this thread) or DB (DeJean, Hyde, etc.), but sometimes they play LB, FB, TE, or DE.

Just saw a stat pop up that Iowa is at 58 games without a 300 yd passer most by far of Power 4 conference, suppose if you can't identify QBs to pass might as well try em at wr

It’s a pretty damning indictment of our recruiting when our first year OC is moving the only QB in the most recent recruiting class to WR less than two months after he started classes at Iowa.

Don't know about whether he knew or was part of the decision;. but he is fast for being 6'4" and 205 lbs. Ran as low as a 10.86 100 meters in track. Probably averaged right at 11 seconds.

I'm more interested in his 40 time than 100 meters.

Me too, So far I would trust Lester's judgement of a QB over KF. I mean, anyone that says Deacon Hill gives us the best chance to win shouldn't be trusted when it comes to QB evaluations.
Lmao.

Lester also had Hill ahead of Lainez after his initial evaluations in the spring

What coach could say if he does have qb skills? Certainly no one on the present staff.
I don’t know that you can make that assumption about Lester yet. Maybe it was his assessment of Resar that led to the switch. Resar was a Brian/Kirk guy so...

Leistikow and Dochterman said matter of factly that Hill was only running with the ones in the spring to install the offense, not because he was obviously better than Lainez.

Zero chance they’ve missed this many times in a row with QBs. It’s a development problem.
No it is an Identifying , Coaching and Developmental problem, They get some Guys who can play and hacksaw off their nutsacks because of Geriatric Gene AKA Kirk oh and compounded the spay and neuter problem by having His make a wish Son as OC till this Year and recently the Gift from God for the rest of the B1G helping in the QB room . You really expect any QB to thrive and develop in that kind of situation ran by complete imbeciles ?

That’s not even close to correct and you know it.
And Lester said matter of factly that he evaluated Hill to be ahead of Lainez because he was getting through the progressions better than Lainez was.

Are fans incapable of living outside of the dream world of their own narratives?

Can you source your info? Because I can source mine.

Edit: I believe I found the source of what you’re talking about, but it doesn’t address what you initially posted about “Hill ahead of Lainez after his (Lester) initial evaluations in the spring”. Please provide.

Back in the spring, Lester mentioned a couple times that the first thing he would do is make his own evaluation on the players.

In this clip, at about 7:40, Lester is asked if Hill is getting the reps as QB1. Lester confirms Hill to be repping with the 1's and cites Hill's ability to better get through the progressions than an inexperienced Marco

How so? I've stated nothing other than fact
They basically cut DH after spring ball and kept ML. That tells you all you need to know.

Regarding Resnar, he must be too athletic to be QB1 at Iowa. God forbid we have a QB that can play in the RPO to keep the defense honest in their approach to defending the QB RB run or the pass downfield which Iowa struggles mightily completing to WR or tight ends. In other words I don’t trust this staff to evaluate a QB properly.

Ferentz should go, but McNutt says hello in regards to this.

McNutt was recruited more as an athlete than a QB prospect out of H.S. A guy that is recruited to specifically to pay QB at Iowa and ends up elsewhere is usually a washout/bust.

Iowa often recruits ahtletes that played QB in high school and plays them on defense at DB (Cooper Dejean says Hello) and sometimes other skilled positions. The big question with Resar is he a great WR prospect or just someone that has washed out at QB at Iowa and they are looking for a place to stash him until he hits the portal. Sort of like that QB Boyle out of Des Moines that washed out at QB, big deal was made of his move to WR but he never played much, then he transferred out.

Hill transferring tells you that the staff feels Lainez to have the better future.

But Hill took the reps as the #1 in the spring. That tells you all you need to know. At that time, Lester had Hill ahead of Lainez

In order to install an offense to the benefit of the other players on offense, not because he was ever going to play Hill and not because of any evaluation above and beyond who could run his offense better during install. Stop trying to use that as a stick to say Lester can't evaluate QB talent. Good Lord!
