Jan Jensen = Angie Lee

Its social media. Fans get to say what they want - I get that.

But it does bug me that fans are so reactionary. They watch a few games and then make harsh claims about coaches and players. I just can't get my head around fans being so quick to judge.

EVERYONE thought Jan was a good hire a year ago. In January, it was a mistake to hire her. Oh well .....
Now it’s February and she is “ok”! ;)

People have awful short attention spans ... and we're also too hooked on instant gratification.

In what should predictably should have been a "rebuilding" year ... we have a team that's proven that it can play with anybody.

We've lost plenty of games this year that we should have won ... but that is part of the learning experience ... both for Jan as a coach ... but also for the players.

It also doesn't hurt that we're finally seeing Syd return to the form that we kinda expected her to exhibit from earlier in the year. I think that it goes without saying that the off-season surgeries for Syd and Hannah made them a little tentative and/or rusty ... and that impacted their play. Furthermore, the coaching staff needed to "feel out" their roster ... and learn that it was likely the best move to opt back to "small-ball" ... despite the fact that we have both Ava and Hannah ... AND, to O'Grady's great credit ... she was arguably the most improved player on the roster!

Anyhow, nobody is perfect ... and I really like our team. I'll be curious to see how roster retention works out for us.

Terrific post Homer

And this board is one unexpected B1G tourney loss or an upset in the tourney away from the board swinging 360 again. It is the nature of the internet. Glad we have CM as our justice warrior keeping all of us on our toes and accountable for what we post. I am certain there has been nothing in their posting past that has not aged well.

Kudos to Jan! This team lost three starters from last year, two of whom are playing in the WNBA and a first off-the-bench player in Molly Davis. Yet here they are about to notch their 20th win on Sunday. Definitely some growing pains but now it looks like this team can play with anybody in the country. Terrific job accomplished by Jan and her staff.

Nice point ... Molly was the top player on her CMU team before transferring to Iowa ... and she carved out an important role for herself on the team. Last year, Molly started in 27 of our games. So we actually lost 4 starters from the squad. So entering this season, of our top 6 players .... only 2 returned ... but those 2 also were coming off of off-season surgeries. Our #7 player last season was Kylie ... and she was averaging just over 14 minutes a game through our first 32 games.

Also, to go from Bluder-ball ... which is high on elegant offense ... but low on defensive fundamentals ... it's a nice change to see how invested our ladies are in playing strong defense. They're correct in asserting that you cannot always count on your shooting to be "on" ... however, you CAN control your defensive intensity in every game. Of course, I don't entirely believe this old adage ... because you can have disciplined folks like Kobe Bryant and Caitlin Clark who will out-work their counterparts ... and they'll find their O regardless.

Well to be clear, I was referencing posters in general, not me. I don't believe I have been impetuous or have looked like an idiot. At least not on the WBB - the off topic board is another beast entirely. One other thing I will say is that the posters here on the WBB are super sensitive, in my opinion. I don't know if that is a function of the women toiling in relative anonymity over the years where only the super positive super fans participated on the WBB, or what. With all of the new attention and interest, not all of it will be positive. Welcome to high profile high interest sports.
The football and mbb boards are full of knee-jerk, repetitive negativity. The wbb board has a lot less of that, so I think when people see some of the negative, impatient opinions creeping in they are sensitive to it bc they don't want it to take over wbb like it has the other boards.

Hear, here…well said. I never go to the fball or mbb boards. They are a cesspool of negativity and nasty people

Scored 22 points since the first 3 minutes. Coaching is terrible.

Next year won’t be good the young players won’t magically fix this team.

If this program can’t capitalize on Clark they will never be elite.

The coach we should have is coaching circles around Jan right now. I’m getting dizzy watching it.

Jan was a lazy hire. She is a good "bigs" coach. that doesn't make you a good head coach. Worst part is, Baranczyk wanted the job.

If they fail to improve next year..... They will have failed to capitalize on all the momentum that CC created.

I'm not opposed to Jan being named the head coach, but I question how much they even looked at other candidates. Which isn't acceptable.

All the trolls coming out of the woodwork. Team was outmatched. If your issue is with the roster, that's on the last coach.

Meanwhile, Maryland fighting in OT to be the only conference team other than UCLA (and USC?) to be in the SW16.

Have a beer. See you in a thread during next year's tournament.

Incredibly impressed by Oklahoma. They were very good and aggressive at every position. We could have played them ten times and we would not have won once. Way mor athletic, skilled, and physical. I know this a knee jerk reaction but I'm not sure they don't beat our team from last year with Clark

Last year's team would have made 25 threes against this OU team.

Bullshit.
They got their butts beat…sometimes that happens in sports.
Pull your thumb outta your mouth and go to work like a big boy.
Jeeeeebys Christmas!
I was at the game. It was clear as day. The offensive gameplan was try force the ball inside to our 6'2 forward against a 6'5 defender or to drive off ball screen into the lane and try to dish in a congested lane.

The ONLY way Iowa has a chance in that game is to shoot threes in volume. But they kept forcing it inside. At one point I think they had 5 turnovers in a row.

Never did Iowa try to push the pace. Even when it was clear a half court game wasn't winnable.

Also, Jan decided to go to the Fran school of timeout hoarding and let the game get out of hand before calling one.

That's the caveat ... this years team isn't very good at making their own shot behind the 3-line. One of our best distance shooters (McCabe) seems to be afraid to shoot unless she's wide-open ... and she definitely doesn't have confidence in her own ability to create her own shots.

I think that the Hawks went with the game-plan they did, because they hoped that they had the quickness advantage on the inside ... because they sure-to-god didn't have the strength or height advantage.

When Kylie is the only one really hitting her outside shots ... that going to do very little to relieve the congestion in the center.

What's more, our "bigs" haven't been all that impressive at rebounding when we play teams that are comparably big or bigger. I know that OU is renown for the great rebounding this year - but that is definitely an area where our ladies could use to improve.

Bullshit. I watched tge game on TV. Iowa turned the ball over all game. They shot poorly. They couldn’t cope with OU’s size advantage…plus the fals just played poorly. They got their butts handed to them! Pretty simple. OU is a lot better team than Uowa today. There wasn’t a game plan in earth that could have salvaged this one for the Hawks….not the way they played today. The third quarter was a killer. They would have needed about 22 time outs that quarter to keep the game in hand!
Wait’ll next year and you can piss and moan some more!

Another thing I think is that the Hawks may have had gained some "false" confidence coming out of their first round game ... whereas OU probably felt a bit embarrassed by their relative poor showing against FGCU. When you also add in the fact that the game was at Norman ... the Hawks were kinda running into a buzz-saw.

As I mentioned in other threads (including this one) ... sometimes players and coaches make mistakes. Sometimes the logic "on paper" doesn't translate to what you end up seeing and/or executing on the court. You gotta hope that everyone involved learns from the experience and moves forward. Learning moments are just that ... they can be painful too ... but when viewed correctly, you can also grow from them.

Kinda reminds me of when Iowa trucked Ohio State in the B1G championship game back in '22-'23. Hawks won by 33 points against a pretty darn good Buckeye team (a Buckeye team that ultimately made it to the elite 8). It's easy to be disappointed by such a poor showing ... but that is the nature of competition. Sadly, sometimes you (or your team) puts up a dud. Does it mean that they were really that bad? They might have been that day ... but it's not (necessarily) a defining moment either.

I hope the girls work hard in the off-season. There is lots of improvement that is needed. I really miss CC's team leadership, hopefully someone steps up in leadership because we didn't have it this year.

Stop with the BS, Oklahoma was allowed to foul the BLEEP out of Iowa every time down the floor and never get called ever.....yeah you can win every damn way if the refs are in your back pocket like those 3 clueless women refing that game last night ....don't be a clown with a stupid response like this!!!

Weaker, smaller, less athletic players are not going to get the calls. Get use to it.

Or perhaps there is a national conspiracy to screw Iowa over. It all started with Fran in Cedar Falls when UNI (with no money) paid off officials (one with final four experience) to screw over Iowa.

Such a tired and lame argument.

Seems like a lot of the same old bullsheet posts during the 5 game losing streak, then it subsided during the nice winning streak, and now it all starts up again with the same old same old. I assume they are fans, but it sure doesn't sound like it when the going gets tough.

There didn't seem to be as much ball movement all year, as in the past. I suppose that's different coaching.
Feeding the post was horrible all year, they always seemed to hesitate then still make a bad pass.
Too often going inside, the post doesn't even seem to consider a score, just looking to get it back out.
Always seem to have trouble with taller defense, don't adjust well
Going to miss having a 6 foot guard running the point to see over the top

Yes. A lot of hysteria.

Building a program post-Caitlin with a new coach is a process. We had a good year and we are moving in the right direction.

No need to panic.

When the rest of the team had trouble scoring ... Caitlin could put the whole team on her back. It's probably pretty rare when a player can do that. This year, I loved Lucy ... but she couldn't do that. I think that is part of the reason why Jan placed a renewed emphasis on D for the team this year ... because when you have lapses on O, you can still rest your hat on defense. However ... that said, you still need to REBOUND! If you keep on letting your opponent get that many second chance buckets ... and it they can prevent you from getting that many second chance-buckets, then the odds strongly favor them to score more (and ultimately win). You simply cannot dig yourself a hole like that.
