Was an outstanding President in a difficult time. We hadn't learned to use quantitative easing as much as we do now (better or worse) and these times were arguably as bad or worse than the Great Recession. He was left a mess after Johnson, Nixon, and Ford. Those men left the US in a down cycle.
Carter, not Reagan so much helped to bring down the Soviets if that credit can be given. The Soviet system was going to collapse either way, but the grain embargo had a huge negative impact on building Soviet people's unrest. Americans way undervalue that.
It was Carter when left with few options that helped to build the US rapid deployment military. Carter also helped build trust with the Soviets with his plain speaking. Reagan did impact things, but Carter started it and had a more level headed approach.
