Joey McKenna Transferring possibility

Cael said he was leaving if he didn't get the top job, so ISU fired Bobby to make room for their legend....didn't want another Gable situation. This is pretty well known. It was a crappy thing to do to the guy who coached you.

If Cael had opportunities to go elsewhere and be a HC why would he stay at ISU as an assistant? If ISU was probing him for where he stood, if he simply laid his cards on the table and the ISU admin decided to make the move, I don't really see that as being a crappy move or some sort of betrayal on his part.

It seems to me that actually wrestling is not that important in June. The recruiting battle has more twists and turns than anything on the Mat. Talk about some dirty Gator Bacon, pretty good reading, indeed.

They didn't fire Douglas because they wanted to get rid of him or because they wanted an up and coming coach. They were content for the most part with the job he was doing. Cael was starting to be considered a hot commodity in the coaching ranks and ISU didn't want to lose him like they did Gable years ago. So, they were in a bind. They felt the only way to keep Cael was to cut bait with Douglas and name him the HC. At the time, some people might not have been comfortable with how they treated Douglas but most seemed to think it was the best thing for the program for the long run. Unfortunately for ISU, it was a short run for Cael at ISU, which made the firing Douglas decision look even worse..
I think you'll agree then that none of that is Cael's fault. ISU made all the decisions that led to Douglas being fired. Anyone who would leave their first job for a MUCH more lucrative career move has no reason to hate on Cael for leaving ISU. In both cases (Douglas firing and Cael leaving), Cael essentially did the only thing 100% of us would have done. Taken both jobs.

Cael told them he wanted the top job. He, essentially, demanded they fire the guy who coached him. After being an assistant for 2 whole years. It was a dick move.

If the above statement is true--I agree---But I have to wonder how much of what happened is truly known, and what is Rumor, or speculation. It would be my guess that the only people that know the 100% truth of this situation is Cael and the ISU AD.

With that said--yes I am a PSU fan..(even before Cael was the coach) I was a Cael fan when he competed also.

I think that he is a great coach! But even good people sometimes make errors in judgment.

I am sure that T and T have some skeletons in their closets as well...Who doesnt!

Just wanted to add my 2 cents for what it is worth.

It's simply amazing the mental gymnastics some of you guys go through to find a reason to diminish Sanderson's accomplishments. Brands over recruits and it's part of the process, Cael does and he can't be trusted, Brands leaves Va Tech in complete turmoil and that's understandable, Cael leaves ISU as a top program and he's a villain. Anything but the truth I guess; there seems to be a need to rationalize why he's beating you because of course it can't be because he's doing a better job, no it has to be because he's an underhanded person that screws people over and cheats to get around scholarship rules.

Vak, you're talking like you have first hand knowledge as to how things played out when in reality you don't have a clue. Site me one credible source that backs up what you said.

Your mod really hit the nail on the head a few weeks back.
I have a solution so you won't have to put up with anything negative said about carl.....stay on your own site and off of ours.

Don't know if it would really be over recruiting. Maybe Lee redshirts this year while McKenna fills 141. Then after Zain graduates, McKenna to 149 Lee at 141. Of course they have Verk and Berge to work in there as well and one or both sits a year. It's all just crazy. I don't know how all that is gonna work out for Cael.

Yes, it's all so crazy and it really hurts PSU. Willie correctly dinged PSU's 2016 recruiting class ranking because, well, despite pulling in #1 Hall, #2 Suriano, and #5 Manville, they just didn't have room for all of them to start for 4 years. So he liked NC State's 2016 recruit class better.

One can only imagine the damage done with the 2018 class recruits, where PSU pulls in 4 out of the top 5 p4p.

How will Cael ever win again?

So sad.

Why have no Iowa posters answered the question on why it's ok that Brands recruited over JRent and Mejia but if Cael maybe (Hoffman) does the same he is crucified?
I've said before that a bunch of the posters on this site are hypocrites and this just reaffirms it. Pablow is probably the worst.

Because it's what fans do. Your board is just as bad, but you can tolerate it because they make blue and white tinted straw man arguments. Cael is allowed to recruit as many elite athletes as he wants. I personally think it will come with a couple defections, but PSU will still be loaded regardless.

Book presents an interesting look at Douglas' life

By J.R. Ogden The Gazette

Published: April 17, 2011 Bobby Douglas was an interesting character while coaching at Arizona State and Iowa State. He's even more interesting in Craig Sesker's new book, "Bobby Douglas: Life and Legacy of an American Wrestling Legend."

Douglas' coaching resume is well-established, starting with one year at California-Santa Barbara, followed by 18 at ASU (including the 1988 NCAA title) and 14 in Ames.

What you might not know about Douglas is the odds he overcame to become the first African American state champion in Ohio high school history, an NAIA national champion at West Liberty (W.Va.), an All-American at Oklahoma State and, finally, an Olympian.

After his mother was brutally attacked and left for dead (while Douglas watched), he grew up in poverty with his grandparents at "Stop 32" in Blaine, Ohio.

You also may not have known Douglas grew up around baseball greats Phil and Joe Niekro and basketball star John Havlicek. As a matter of fact, Sesker writes, "Phil Niekro Highway now runs by the Bobby Douglas Bridge on the way to John Havlicek Gymnasium at Bridgeport High School."

All three are Hall of Famers in their respective sports.

"I could hit Joe, but I couldn't hit Phil," Douglas, a standout baseball and football player during his younger days, told Sesker.

There's also an interesting segment about his firing at Iowa State -- although athletics director Jamie Pollard never called it that at the time -- and the role his star pupil, Cael Sanderson, played in that firing.

"The Ohio State job had come open and we couldn't risk losing Cael," Pollard told Sesker. " ... Cael told me 'I'm either the head coach at Iowa State or I leave.'"

ISU didn't want to lose Sanderson as it lost Dan Gable to Iowa so many years earlier. Douglas was given the option to stay one more year, but didn't want to work under that cloud, knowing he wouldn't be coming back.

Douglas has never blamed Sanderson, then or now in this book, but his wife, Jackie, told Sesker "I have a hard time forgiving Cael for what he did."

And Pollard now told Sesker if he knew Sanderson would pack up and leave for Penn State, he never would have made the change.

Hindsight.

Covering Douglas and the Cyclones for The Gazette from afar for all his years in Ames, I thought I knew the man pretty well. Sesker's book tells me differently.

If you're a Cyclone wrestling fan, this is a must-read. Even if you're not an ISU booster or you're just a wrestling fan, it's worth your time.

Pretty sure it is Cael's job to have the best possible wrestlers at PSU. Anyone crucifying him for finding someone better is being ridiculous.

Key facts left out by Vak was that tOSU was going to hire Sanderson. He did not just go to ISU one day and demand the job, ISU came to him.

You calling me a moron is laughable, I've see enough of your posts to know you aren't in my league I.Q. wise. But you keep name calling like a 10 year old.

This literally has nothing to do with my post. Thanks. But if you can't see th context of a situation as to why it would be different for a guy to go back to his alma mater at one of the most storied programs in wrestling from a school that has no wrestling history versus a guy LEAVING his alma mater shortly after forcing them to fire their/his head coach so that he (Cael) could replace him to go to a school he has no connection with....I mean, if you can't see that those are different scenarios, that's on you, pal.

Welp, close the internet, we can't talk about stuff unless we were in the room to witness it now.

It's literally amazing that you can brook no criticism of your coach, as if he walks on water. That went well for the Penn State family last time they did it....

This is the way it happened. ISU canned Bobby to give it to Cael. After 3 years, he split for PSU, and ISU went downhill.

If there is one thing about Cael that seems constant, it is that he wants what is best for him personally. Loyalty doesn't seem to be a big factor.

Yes. You tell him. You certainly would not want anybody to challenge the collective narrative nor interfere with the self-gratification circle.

So Cael, years before it happened, knew Chance was going to get in trouble. Ok then. You're not suggesting that Cael knew Chance didn't have the talent, correct?

And Haines, while Snyder was at 197, should have known that he was going to be an Olympic champ and a 3 time Heavyweight Champ. You should just stop. You make it more clear every time you post that you are clueless.

Hoffmans dad says you are full of sh&t.

You are correct.

Cael can see into the future. It's a gift. He could see Marstellar would get in trouble, despite never having been in any.

It's not perfect though.... somehow Cael couldn't see Andrew Long's potential for trouble, given his known past.

I wonder what these recruits and their families think of Cael's ruthless, kick-em-to-the-curb "coaching" philosophy. IMO a commitment is a two-way street.

So who has been kicked to the curb?
I read this thread and I get the impression there is all kind of things happening. I look else where and there isn't anything going on.

So who got kicked?

When Iowa lost two recruits after the Spencer verbal announcement, was that Tom kicking somebody to the curb?

I would think you guys would be happy Cael took the Penn State job. I mean if he had stayed at Iowa State and built in Ames what he has put together in State College you guys would all need therapy. Being the number 3 program in the Big10 has your heads ready to explode. I do not think being the second best program in Iowa is something you could live with.

Cael essentially admitted that he left for Penn State because he was struggling to succeed in the less fertile recruiting grounds of Iowa as a second banana. He wanted his job to be easier. Plus he was getting rolled by Iowa every year. So....good try?

Kind of hard to kick someone that already walked out.

Not sure how other PSU fans feel but I'm sure glad he was getting rolled by Iowa every year and losing the recruiting battle. Because of that, he's now in Pennsylvania, rolling Iowa and every other university out there on the mat and in the recruiting wars. And he's not only doing well getting top talent from PA but the top guys nationwide. Hell, if there were Iowa kids worth Cael putting a premium on he'd dominate that state as well. So yeah, I'm glad things didn't work out just right for Cael at ISU..

Just deleted what I had typed...so as not to sink to your level. Pretty sure my IQ is much higher than any of the psu supporters on here. Could be that the money just wasn't there at ISU...so on to psu. Hard to imagine all the top HS wrestlers not needing or wanting any scholarship money. Probably just lucky for carl?

Blah blah blah every thread. You penn staters are a sensitive bunch! Fans on an Iowa board don't like Cael?? Who cares? I read at least one post a day on bwi bagging on Brands or how delusional HR posters are but anytime Cael is mentioned over here you smug fanboys show up and cry like babies Just stfu already

Hell, I'm not even suppose to be here. When you started a thread over on BWI I took it as a personal invite to break my promise and come back.

So anyone that's pissed about it can blame Turk. It's his fault.... lol

Do you really think that is his only job? Or Brands' only job?
Great Point!!!! Many of us forget their most important job and that's to help mold these boys into well rounded young men with morals. I'll be honest, I think Cael and Tom are two of the best out there when it comes to doing just that.
