Joey Silva

You don't believe this do you?

No doubt, some states output more high quality wrestlers than others. That doesn't mean, you don't go after a stud wrestler in one of the states not known for wrestling. A good wrestler is a good wrestler. Doesn't matter which state they're from.

So are we to believe PSU told Silva. "Don't go committing anywhere just yet, because we might need you. Maybe."

If that was the case, which I doubt, it looks like they got the piece of the puzzle they were trying to get.

Mileage v Silva, I believe both to be too Top 5 in their respectable class.
Interesting style matchup. Jmo imo
Barn burner
Good lucks studs competiting

Think what it probably means is: don't go committing to anyone because if you don't have a rich uncle we will get you the money necssary one way or another.....If we decide we need you.

Don....you don't believe this happens? Kid is a soph or Jr. I have seen this happen a lot in recruiting over the years. Whats hard to believe? I don't know the conversation directly, just what I was told but PSU is more than in a position to say something like that and have a kid buy it. I do know thats not the only place he is looking. His coach is well connected to D1 coaches especially in the big10.

Very possible. I don't think he has the resources to go without support.

Penn State is the boss right now. They can do this.

At the end of the day it is not bad advice.
Please understand, I have zero details however I have seen many time a school advising this for a number of reasons. It is a kids choice to take the suggestion.

I don't know the kid well. Seen him wrestle in Florida and around the country and have met his coach a couple of times. This was something told to me by team families in the stands and confirmed by one of the assistants. I don't understand the surprise.

I'm not surprised and I know this type of stuff happens. It still doesn't make any sense to me, but I'm not a fan of games so there is that.

To write a kid off because of his geography seems silly. We are not saying that we want a whole team from there or that it is a hotbed by any means. It is possible, and since he is so unpolished, (not my words) he maybe nowhere close to his ceiling.
Who's writing a kid off? How about this Czech - give me a run down of all FL kids and how they did at Fargo (which is impressive), then tell me how DI turned out? Thanks.

This is a whole new Florida you're seeing. The focus on freestyle and greco (greco especially) has gone away and it's all folkstyle now. The game has changed.

I see your point but Florida has had many champions in Fargo, a number of D1 qualifiers, AA's, a few champs and olympians. They also put out good wrestlers in d2 and d3. They are not Iowa, ok or penn but they are not bottom of the barrel either. A surprising number of kids from Florida and did well at Blair. (Least we forget it was a Florida kid that beat mike z in Fargo. Solomon fleckman wreslted for Lehigh and was an AA. (Knocked Rieland out of the round of 12). Multiple Greco national champ at Fargo. Like I said, not deep but can put out some tough kids.

So we shouldn't recruit a top ten overall kid at a need weight because he is from Florida?

I don't know if this is in reference to my post asking when the last time we had a kid of the team from Florida was, but I was just genuinely curious. He seems to be a real talent.

It was in response to WidespreadGeo. No worries. I agree that Florida isn't a place we have gone much of at all in the past but I hope we expand our reach.

What FL needs is a DI program! They do have one college sponsered program in Lakeland. Makes me sick to think of all the DI sports FL has but ZERO wrestling.

EDIT: U of Central Florida needs to get DI wrestling back to FL! Easy to fly into. Orlando might be able to host a DI Championship too.

So, are you referring to Lake Highland Prep? Which replaced Brandon as the team in FL. So, the Florida Jets program is fading away from freestyle and Greco?

Never said that. I'm referring to the state as a whole going away from freestyle and Greco.

So do have any reason to believe that Iowa is a possible destination for him?

Nerem grew up in Florida. May have done all or part of high school in Iowa, but grew up in Florida.
He (Nerem) started kicking my arse in NE Iowa in jr high. Not sure of his history before then, but definitely prepped all of his hs years at north fayette

Earl Hall is from FL and was a 2016 AA.
As a Cyclone fan, have seen the good, bad and ugly from Florida (e.g., Bono, Joey Cozart and Earl Hall...love Earl, but "ugly" in that you never knew who would be showing up that particular day). Probably not that different from other states, though the amount and degree tested in multi-state competitions definitely helps a fan see who is for real and who isn't (see Clark and Meeks)
