Just started my colonoscopy prep

Oh yeah - that was an important part of the prep process: changing up what you're eating in the days leading up to it. I think it makes the prep go smoother. You're supposed to stop eating high-fiber foods, like fruits and vegetables and whole grains and a bunch of red meat.

Exactly. It was more or less 4 days of eating changes prior. Looking back at it, there wasn't really much to get out of my system. Hell, I didn't even drink ALL the fluid...didn't need to. Once things started moving, in about an hour I knew I was probably cleaned out...and I was.

The worst part was obviously the taste of the drink, and also I wasn't used to being so "full of fluid" I'll call it. I hadn't been THAT full be it food or drink in a long time - very uncomfortable feeling. I eat like a bird any more...just wasn't used to it is all.

Turned out for the best though. They found and removed polyps - all benign. I was sore for about a week but am now back to normal. Now it's 3 years until the next colonoscopy (I'm 62), so I'm good for the time being.

After the health year I've had, very good news.

Very timely for me. I had mine Friday, so I did the prep Thursday night and Friday morning (half the night before, half the morning of). Here's my summary:

As I figured, the prep was 10x worse than the actual procedure. You drink the stuff (16oz), then you drink another 32 ounces of fluid (I chose gatorade, but can't be the red, purple, or (I read in one article) orange colors). Wait 30-minutes to an hour for the grumbling to start, then park yourself on the toilet. Once it starts, there's really no use even trying to stand up for the first hour. It's every three or four minutes, so you might as well stay parked. It lasted about 2.5 hours for me, then I was good.

As for the procedure, they had me strip down and put on the robe, then get in the bed. The anesthesiologist gave me propofol. I can see why guys like Michael Jackson like it so much for helping them sleep! Once he put it in the IV it took maybe 2 or 3 seconds before I was out. Then felt like I woke up immediately in recovery (actually about 30 or 40 minutes later). No loopy/hungover feeling like with other general anesthesia. I woke up refreshed and clear-headed and ready to go. They made sure I could drink a cup of water and keep it down, then had me change clothes and leave. I was in recovery for maybe 20 minutes before I was dressed and heading out.

Here's Daniel Tosh explaining his experience - starts about 40 seconds in. He mixed his prep liquid w gatorade. I didn't do that - mixed it w water, drank it, and chased it w a 32oz bottle of gatorade.

Propofol is far and away my favorite drug AINEC, and trust me I've taken a lot of drugs over my lifetime. There are apparently a lot of anesthesiologists that feel the same way and many have fallen into addiction because of its allure. It's also commonly used in Canada for assisted medical death/suicide.

I think my prep was 32 oz of a powder with water. Slammed the whole thing just to get it done then craps ahoy. I felt like Harry….

If any of you need a ride home from your colonoscopy I'm happy to help. You'll still be high from the anesthesia and your bung hole will be clean as a whistle. No better time to try out the butt segs you've always wanted to try.
