Keegan is Special. Check out Kenyon Murray's Posts in this Thread, where he Evaluates His Sons' Basketball Skills

Keegan brings a next level athleticism that will pay big. Fran had him in during crunch time and Keegan has forced the hand in terms of minutes. He is going to be a star.

When you look at minutes for the Northwestern game:

Our 5 starters:
36 JBO
34 Garza
34 CJF
27 Weezy
24 Connor

Our 4 players off the bench:
21 Keegan
12 Patrick
08 Jack
04 JoeT
200 minutes available

unless something changes, I think Keegan will be playing 20 plus min/game moving forward

If he keeps doing what he's been doing, those minutes should be there for him. One would hope anyway...........

14 points (4-8 shooting)
9 rebounds (4 offensive)
5-5 from the FT line
1 assist
3 steals

@PHawkKenyon , you gotta be proud!!!

5-5 might as well have been 50-50. The enormous pressure on those free throws, and we've seen seniors and JW miss one just today in such a big spot. After JT was poked in the eye, Piekell got to pick any of the 5 players on the floor to shoot the FTs and he picked Keegan. No matter what comes of this year, this will not be a one-off shot at big things.

he's been such a great surprise

I don't think recruiting video clips of highlights prove much. It really comes down to the recruiting coach making the correct evaluation of everything...raw talent, upside, skills, work ethic, character. I thought the Murray twins would either be a stroke of genius by Fran or bust. Fran looks like he picked up two of the biggest recruiting steals of his 10year plus time at Iowa.

Fran has had some misses but Keegan was a hit (or home run) ;)

@PHawkKenyon , have both of your sons been pretty cool under pressure? Keegan looks so cool & collected all the time.

And holy crap, those 2 FTs were huge in a 2 point win!
They finished as the #1 (Keegan) and #2 (Kris), shooting a career 88% and 85% from the freethrow line at Prairie. Both had game winning shots versus top 10 rated prep schools last year. So to answer, YES! 😉

I have always been a fan of defense & rebounding because if you don't rebound the ball, you can't score the ball.

And speaking of defense, my goodness, this pic below shows off his wing span. not sure if this was one of his 3 blocks, but....

Keegan's stat line:
14 points (4-8 shooting)
9 rebounds (4 offensive)
5-5 from the FT line
1 assist
3 steals
3 blocks

It was. He did a phenomenal job when isolated against him and had two blocks on Harper. This pic, gives me goosebumps because he has embraced the role on the defensive end!!

Will Harper be an NBA draft pick? 2nd round?

Probably. I've seen him in the late first round in a couple mock drafts. He is huge, has huge hands, and knocks down threes at a extraordinary clip. Teams probably think they can thin him down a bit to add some quickness. Keegs should be showing up on scouts radar. He looks like he belongs and his numbers are great in limited minutes. Advanced stats love him. If he starts getting extended minutes it will be interesting to see if his numbers don't drop off.

There was a little sumpin-sumpin going on between Harper and Keegan. They both play with fire, and I loved seeing Keegan standing up to the more experienced Harper and not backing down.

This thread, with Kenyon's evaluations of his sons' basketball skills, was such a breath of fresh air for me to discover today. Kenyon, I have been a die-hard Iowa basketball fan since my grandpa took me to a game in the Fieldhouse around 1980 and you are one of my favorite Hawkeye basketball players I've ever watched. Loved how hard you played, and you were so smooth - gliding around the court so effortlessly. Keegan has had a couple layups this year where he just seemed to float through the air to the hoop (looking smooth and effortless) that I played back a few times.

It's going to be fun watching your sons develop as Hawkeyes! Keegan is off to such a great start, and Kris will get opportunities to shine when we aren't as deep as this year.

does Harper have some weight to lose, too, or is he just "thick?"

To my eye he looks a bit pudgy compared to your average wing player and at 245 lbs he is significantly heavier than most players his height. Myles Johnson only outweighs him by 10 pounds. While he is displaying shooting and finishing talents that should catch the eye of NBA teams it is hard for me to see him sticking unless he drops 15-20 lbs and gets a bit quicker. Your average NBA small forward only weighs about 220 lbs or so.

Very refreshing to read all of this given the state of players in some programs and ME, ME, ME and looking to punch a ticket to the NBA. Embrace the grind, be humble, be a great teammate, know your role (cue the Rock!) and your time and opportunity will come. Family reminds me a lot of Eppy when people complained that Eppy was behind Parker Hesse, Dad said remain patient, respect your older teammate and keep working, your time will come!

It's obvious you've instilled some great qualities in your sons, looking forward to a great four years from both! Enjoy this ride Hawk fans, even in a pandemic reflect that we are Top 5 team, with a great shot at a Big Ten Title and a deep run in the Tourney!
