Kueter

Perhaps someone can explain why it seems to be difficult for Ben to put weight on? I coached a a couple players who walked on at IA as a LB and lineman. After their first semester, they gained 30-35 pounds, by years end another 10-15. One about Ben’s the other 6’2 195.

It will be difficult for him to play LB at Iowa if he doesn’t get to 245-250 and have the lateral speed to play the position. I don’t see him getting big enough to play on the line.

This isn’t meant to be a knock on Ben. He’s a gifted athlete with a great discipline. If he has to fall back on wrestling, it’s not exactly a heartbreaking story.
I wonder if he is really having to concentrate on what he's putting in his body, and that's some of what's holding him back. I'd assume he hasn't really had to do that before. In HS, he could probably eat whatever he wanted and not lose a step, but gaining weight is a discipline and he might still be figuring that out. Losing and gaining weight takes discipline, but I think gaining good weight is harder than losing weight. If you have never tried to gain good weight, you wouldn't understand how difficult it is as it is a job in itself.

My experience comes from knowing what kind of an experience the guys have from football. The meals they receive along with strength, speed, agility, hydration and sleep regimens.
I believe Keuter participated in all of this and am not ignorant to the fact it is much different than wrestling, which probably explains why he never really got his lungs last year. The main point was not seeing the weight gain I was accustomed to seeing.

I agree with your premise, it makes sense.
Thanks for your reply.
