That said it's nice to see them not quit like we've seen in previous years.

Also surprising to keep the game that close with absolutely pitiful shooting!!
I will say if jbo can't figure his shit out, then fran has to start looking at others more often.

Scrap it and on to the next one!!

Grit is the only reason it wasn’t a 50 point loss.

Plenty of grit but plenty of missed shots and bad rebounding. overshadowed it.

Finesse isn't going to get this team a Natty. If they realize it now they can win the whole thang. If they don't recognize the need we will fizzle in the tourney. There will be more games like this when shooting is off. Hustle and high level defense will keep us in it.

can’t disagree with this. Against the NIU and southerns of the schedule he’s fine. But against the big boys not so much. He’s done little to nothing in those 3 games against major conference opponents. Right now he’s getting pushed around and too weak inside on both ends of the floor. Be one thing if he was hitting shots and doing other stuff but he really isn’t.

In my opinion Patrick, not Keegan, should be the 9th man in the rotation and no way like last few games he should he ever come off the bench before JoeT. Nunge and Joe should always be our first guys in off the bench.

If you aren't willing to hit the pine and if you don't have floor burns you would sit. pathetic effort by conner and jobo and frankly all of them were lazy.

Iowa got crushed on the boards, especially Patrick McCaffery
Iowa got crushed on the boards but that 2nd half when Iowa tried and tried to make a run it seemed like every loose ball bounced right to a zag when we had 3 guys crashing. Wasn’t our day. On to the next one.

There is some variance in 50/50 balls, but when every loose ball goes to one team, that should tell you about the effort level of the two teams. Iowa's effort level on defense in this game was embarassingly bad. No other way to put it.

National guy broke it down here. If this team thinks it's going anywhere with that type of effort, they are going to be very mistaken, starting Tuesday night with Purdue.

Really you are going after Patrick for this? Our backcourt was horrendous on defense, simple as that. Where was the podcast star at?
Big difference between Patrick and JBo is that Jbo has earned his minutes. I haven't seen why Patrick plays so much. He's another long lengthy player that Fran loves. Patrick needs to start playing with some tenacity. It's amazing Connor gets after it and it just looks like Patrick goes through the motions. You are right though Patrick playing 10 minutes didn't decide that game. I'd argue though keegan has earned those 10 minutes over Patrick. No way Patrick should play 10 minutes to Keegan's 5 minutes based on what each has done this year.

Thanks for the thread. It shows Iowa has no idea how to play man. They are lost. As far as my point there was about 3 or 4 offensive boards that bounced to the zags in the 2nd half when Iowa desperately needed them to get back in the game. The 3 people I watched the game with noticed it too. Either way, iowa cannot rely on getting all the loose balls and need to play better defense.

Iowa needs both the younger McCaffery and Keegan Murray to be playable against good competition. It's been a mixed bag against the 2 good teams Iowa has played this year (UNC and Gonzaga). Neither of them needs to score when they are in the game, or at least they don't need to look for their shots. Just hustle and play defense, scoring will happen.

I’ll throw isu game in there because it’s a rival from major conference even they they aren’t good this year. Yesterday was first game Keegan looked like a freshman on the floor and that was bound to happen. But he has in every game provided what you said in hustling, defense and hit the boards. I haven’t seen that with Patrick in these 3 games minus a little in garbage time vs isu. He provides no spark, plays sub par D and provides no toughness down low and a liability on the boards.

Playing defense is all about hustle, body position, and communication. There is some natural talent involved, but if you truly want to play good defense you need all three and it could be done. I wish they wouldn't do the three-quarter press, get back, and play a combination of zone defense. It's all about HUSTLE!

Garza himself said he was disappointed in the team's effort -- lack of hustle, poor defense, and not going after rebounds and loose balls. Look it up.

I was shocked at what appeared to be a lack of intensity from the Hawkeyes. The poor passing, especially from JBo, persisted throughout the game, but was especially egregious early. JBo seemed like he was not feeling well. I don't know, but he never looked like himself in any respect from the opening tip to the end. I kept calling for Fran to get him out and get Joe T in there, and once Joe did finally get in, you saw what he did.

I think it might be time to start Joe T and bring the veteran JBo off the bench.

But overall, I expected the Hawkeyes to play with their hair on fire. Instead, they seemed to be going through the motions. I don't get it. Guys playing pick-up games at the rec center dive for loose balls, battle for rebounds, and play in-your-face defense. Why the hell can't the Hawkeyes, especially when they're playing the #1 team in the country after six days off?

The two starting guards on Gonzaga got 25 rebounds total. Ayayi had 18, Suggs 7.

The ball might not have bounced Hawkeye way but seems like lack of effort/intensity/quickness/athleticism came into play from our guards. Our starting lineup
has 3 guards (connor, Fredrick, JBo) and JoeW who can be considered a big guard/small PF depending on how you define it. JoeW certainly has pulled his weight on Rebounding, but the other guys, no.

I think Fran needs to address the rebounding issue to get to a higher level. Giving Keegan more time at the "4" over Connor seems like the best fix because Keegan brings rebounding and defense.

Connor can get more PT at PG and backing up JoeW.

PMac is supposedly a "3" but I don't think he has the quickness/perimeter game to be a 3 at this time in his career. Keegan has definitely played better and deserves more minutes. I would say the "4" needs to be Nunge/Keegan.

Nepotism. No reason for connor to be in there to clank free throws in last few minutes when we are down 12. Ridiculous but Nep U is gonna Nep U, just like football

say what you want but Connor has earned his playing time with his versatility and especially in the end of games. Patrick on the other hand hasn’t proved that he deserves to be one of the first 2 guys off the bench.

Connor was hitting his shots in the first half. Even the ones that he put up after a whistle went in. I was fine with Connor.
I liked the line-up with Garza, Nunge, CJ, Weiskamp and Toussaint.

Bullshit....we needed scorers. He proved his ineptness yesterday. He can play other spots but not there

JBO looked like a small sub par athlete who's had two hip surgeries on the floor against guys who are basically out of his league.

Theres tons of blame to go around but JBO should not be the primary ballhandler on this team. It doesn't make any sense for him to be in that role.

Hes slow and not a good passer.

Put him off the ball.

For a team averaging 100 points per game scorers are not high on the list of problems.

What difference does it make what spot he plays anyway? He's the same player who isn't a great shooter.

Guy led nation in turnover to assist last year. Need someone who can get the open guy a shot and he can make an open one if given but not chucking up I’ll advised shots like Jbo did in back to back possession to get to single digits before last tv timeout. who else would you have had in there over him yesterday.

It wasn't just PMac. We need to get something, anything off the glass from CJF too. Patrick normally does well rebounding out of his area. CJF is non-existent on the glass always. Bohannon rebounds better than CJF.
I think they focused on getting back on misses to counter Gonzagas transition game.
I believe there are two ways to accomplish that, one stay home and get the rebound or get back and slow up the transition. The latter didn't work for us.

I'm not talking about offensive rebounding.... ending a defensive possession (without giving up a bucket) often requires you get a defensive rebound. Gonzaga's shooting guard had 18 rebounds, including 5 offensive rebounds.

Iowa's shooting guard had zero rebounds.

and averages less than 1 rebound a game this year.
