never parked here before. Does it totally fill up, and if so how early do you need to be? Do people tailgate there much (I know some random cars will) or mostly just park and walk elsewhere?

I park there when I give my good pass to friends/family. We kind of share the tailgate duties/set up. Me and a couple friends then bus or walk over to go tailgate in my pass lot across from Kinnick.
Their is a lot of tailgating there but not like close to the stadium. I'd say 40% of the cars/RVS tailgate. The nice part is the amount of grass areas if you get there early.
It fills up early (probably 2-2.5 hours before game) if the Foundation is having a reception. If they aren't you're usually ok up to about a hour before. The buses are a pain post game if it's close. Better off hoofing it if the weather is decent since it's mostly downhill.

Yes it fills up, but not often. Expect it to fill up for rivalry games and night games. It won't fill for Ball State or NDSU. You can park there the night before.

A lot of people tailgate there.

What about Miami of Ohio?

Any Mac-OOC games you can pretty much gaurantee are not going to fill.

OOC games like ISU, UNI, and night games like Pitt might fill.

Early low-key big ten games like Indiana or Northwestern won't fill. Bigger games like Wisconsin, OSU, Nebraska might fill. Big night games like Minnesota last year and Michigan this year will most likely fill.

Also keep your eye on the weather because if Iowa City gets a lot of rain then Finkbine golf course won't allow to park cars on it, and the Soccer field might close too, which means everyone will try to go to Finkbine, and it will close earlier than normal.

It gets full but you can usually find a spot. A lot of mini buses and bigger vehicles.

Good mix of old timers and young parties.

Last year for Minny (7:00 pm game in November), it was full and it was full VERY early. Two cars from the extended Doodle clan arrived at 8:30 AM and a buddy was already having some difficulty holding the two adjacent spots. Another family member showed up a couple of hours later and it was already closed and they had to park at Wig and Pen.
  • Miami it should be fine.
  • ISU...night game, rivalry....it will fill up pretty fast. Maybe not quite Minny 2015 fast...but fast enough that you should probably not plan on arriving after Noon and expect to just waltz in and get a great spot.
  • NDSU it should be mostly fine, but probably lots of green and gold.
  • Northwestern it should be fine
  • Wisconsin...again, this is a tough call. A lot of Badgers make the trek, but it probably won't quite be a "get there at the crack of dawn or else!" situation, though it certainly has the potential for that.
  • Michigan (7:00 PM start in November and the only game Doodle has on the calendar this season), if we are having a very good season and the weather is ANYTHING close to what we had for Minny last year, then expect it to once again be very full, very early. If the season is in the tank and/or weather is atrocious, then it won't be as bad.
  • Nebraska...Black Friday...early start....crap shoot. Too hard to call. Depends greatly on the weather and what kind of season each team is having. But frankly it's probably best to just assume that intense rivalry + easy drive + passionate fans on both sides + wildcards (possibly West champ decider, bowl bid on the line, etc.) = full parking lots. If one or both teams are having a worse year than expected, and/or the weather is absolutely horrid, then it won't be a total chaotic scramble in that lot, but will likely still be plenty full.
