March 14 Joe Lunardi / ESPN Bracketology: IOWA is on the Bubble (7th Team OUT). #59 NET Ranking (8th Best in B1G) on March 14

How do you figure?
I think he just means they remarketed those games as first four? They don’t want teams thinking they didn’t make the tournament if they lose in those, especially when they began putting major conference teams in these after recent tournament expansion.

Hope they make it. This is one of the more fun FM teams to root for. This year you have players competing to near the top of their ability with few really clear weaknesses other than ability that D1 players shouldn't have. They are also getting better.

Semantics... And still wrong.
"The First Four is a play-in round of the NCAA Division I men's and women's basketball tournaments."

Lunardi has Mich. St. in. They have one good win that I've seen, Baylor. They are behind Iowa in BT & we beat them in Lansing. Izzo affect?
And they could lose one or two more. mKind of depends if NU gets healthier before Wednesday.

I don't get how he could possibly have Seton Hall 7 spots higher than Iowa. We own the head to head, have almost identical overall records, and are 11 spots higher in NET rankings. They are slightly better in Quad 1 but still..
Seton Hall is trending down. And their net is seriously starting to suck now compared to most any bubble team. Losing @Uconn over 2 months after beating them at home is not a bad thing. But losing by 30 points is. And their overall record vs Tier 1-3 is now worse than Iowa.

After finishing the non-conference schedule and losing the first 3 games of the Big Ten schedule no one on here was willing to predict that out come.
No but what was disgusting is how many fans said things like “no way this team makes the NIT”.

I did not predict NCAA but I declared they still could.

It was looking bleak at a few points of season. After @MD loss I believe we were 14-11 and 6-8 or thereabouts. And ZERO Quad 1 wins.

Wikipedia is the definitive source which decides whether teams seeding 65-68 are NCAA tournament participants?

This is from the NCAA website (https://www.ncaa.com/news/basketbal...-27/first-four-ncaa-tournament-ultimate-guide) and doesn't read like the "First Four" are "play-in" games:

Who plays in the men's First Four?

When selecting the teams for the NCAA tournament, the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee ranks every team from No. 1 through No. 68. In its current format, the First Four consists of eight teams — the four lowest-seeded automatic qualifiers and the four lowest-seeded at-large teams. Each subset plays against itself (i.e., at-large teams face at-large teams, and automatic qualifiers face automatic qualifiers).

I kinda disagree on this. The team is playing as well as they have this year. I'd feel better if they didn't have a whole week off right now. I think it negatively impacts things.
I really wish it would be a Thursday like game, but if they can't stay fired up for a week, they don't deserve it.

Correct! I was just going to post this same thing.

A team is either in the tournament or they are not. Just because a few media members and millions of ignorant fans falsely call them play in games doesn't make it true.

The First Four teams are seeded for crying out loud. How can a team be seeded for a tournament unless they are actually IN that tournament?

The NCAA tournament consists of 68 teams....period....end of story.

I’m wrong that the ncaa markets the first four games as part of the ncaa tournament? lol okay. No one cares about who is right here, I’m just stating the effort ncaa and media have went to try not to call them play-in any more. They sell this as the ncaa tournament itself. But not a big deal if fans still want to call it a play in.

key matchups this week prior to the Iowa game:

Villanova @ Seton Hall, probably need Villanova to win this game then lose vs Creighton on the weekend. A loss puts Seton Hall in jeopardy as they have DePaul on Saturday so that won't move the needle.

Seton Hall victory isn't horrible for Iowa as it adds a win over a team in the field, and with a second loss of the week to Creighton Villanova takes themselves out of the discussion

New Mexico has a home game vs Fresno State then an away game at a really tough Utah State. Definitely need them to lose to Utah State.

Virginia, this team has been trounced by 30+ points 2 of their last 4 games (Duke and V Tech). They have Georgia Tech remaining but are playing bad enough to foot gun themselves out of the tourney.

Providence is currently out but they have a home game vs Uconn which would get them in.

Saint Johns has pretty much a cake walk (Georgetown and Depaul), a slip would put them in trouble but I think they get in.

Utah, Colorado and Oregon all have games against each other. Be nice if they all found a way to lose 1.

Only other teams that I could see belly flopping themselves out of the dance are Florida Atlantic (unlikely as fun team to watch). Either Indiana State or Colorado State I suppose. Maybe Oklahoma but that would mean a loss to both Cincinnati and Texas which probably putc Cincy in.

In the end the fight for the last 4 spots is pretty tight and there will almost assuredly be a ticket stealer somewhere in the conference tournaments. Iowa must win Sunday then just not falter in round 1 and I think they are surely in. Lose Sunday, probably have to make champ game to be in discussion.

Ticket sealer = conference tournament upset winner. Could also mean only that team makes the tourney and the upset knocks the other out.

Crazy that Florida Atlantic went from final four last season, we’re ranked in top ten end of December, and now are listed in some of the last teams selected for at large.

Key matchup this week is Iowa vs Illinois

That's the key question. How far do we go up with a win? How far do we drop with a loss?

Until Sunday, when we know the answers to those questions, the bracketology is nearly irrelevant.
I think an IL win gets us in. But the pesky BTT looms, and we have proven we can lose to anyone. If we lay an egg and go 0-1 then we are out. We would have to win 1 game in the BTT.

If we lose to IL, ugh. Then probably 2 wins are needed in BTT, and that is possibly not enough. We would be 18-13 heading in, tack on 2-1 and we are 20-14.

No other college bball games being played I guess. You one of those guys who says fans shouldn't look ahead? As a fan, we need to be focused only on the next game in front of us!
As a fan, we need to be focused only on the next game in front of us!

As a fan, I don't think I'll need to focus too much. Just make sure the recliner is set with remote in hand & volume on high. Possibly a cold beverage nearby. Heck I'll probably watch Illinois v. Purdue tonight... not gonna focus too much on this either. lol

However the Iowa players do need to focus on the next game. I recommend they watch the game tonight & do a deep dive scouting report on each of the Illini players.
