I'm up here in Washington state so I can't really see for myself, but, Is Marinelli the right size for 165 and if Young isn't the right size for 174, why not. Is it because the coaching staff thinks that he could wrestle at 165 or does Young need to spend time in the weight room.?

No, they're both undersized. Sorensen at 149 is causing 157-174 to all bump up. Hope they can add some weight/strength during the off season.

It is my opinion that Marinelli is the right size for 165 and Young needs a little work to be a solid 174. The good news about Young is that he has the frame and time to do it.

The notion that Marinelli is a true 157 was concocted by this board's eye test despite Marinelli himself saying 157 would be a very tough cut.

The "eye test" is admittedly unreliable, but when you see him stand next to Hall at the same weight, it is hard to say Marinelli is a full 165. Now, I know Hall wrestled 174, but he was tiny at 174.

I think Marinelli could use to gain 5lbs and Young could use to gain 10 lbs. I don't want our guys too big because I know what a 6 month long hard cut will do to a guy.

The notion wasn't concocted by this board. At trials he was walking around low-mid 160s depending on his workouts/diet at the time.

How do I know this? I sat next to him for 2 days during trials. That's not a true 165 imo for last season.

Hopefully he is up at least 10lbs for this season

Fair enough, I was just going off of what he said himself. You wouldn't think someone walking around in the mid to low 160s would be considered a hard cut to 157. All guys are different I guess.

He did fairly well for a little guy.

Agreed, but the point of emphasis is, they did it despite size disadvantages. Hall at 174, was clearly the most skilled, but size made for some tough matchups for him. At 163 he is huge and was already world class.

Marinelli also looked quite small against McFadden. I think he made it to the Finals despite a size disadvantage. He wasn't beating Hall no matter what, but giving up the size on top of the skill mismatch, made for an even more lopsided match than it would have been(he may have lasted a couple minutes longer).

It will be interesting with what goes on in that 165/174 weight for both Iowa and psu. I have heard rumblings of Joseph being forced to 174 so Hall can go 165. Similar to what happend with Taylor and Jenkins. Could end up being a similar result also. Not saying Joseph beats Hall but could cause another transfer. As for Iowa I am pretty sure Kem cant make 149 anymore so here is hoping both Marinelli & Young can add 10 or so pounds of good weight. I REALLY like both kids and honestly they both should be top 5 type guys at their weight this year.

I've heard no such rumblings. I also don't think it would cause any angst if true or not. They are both champs. I can see them both at their current weight, and I can see them switching weights as Cenzo has a body type that could support more weight without losing anything in the process. I think both guys would support the process.

As for Bubba, he chose confrontation regarding redshirting, and that's never a wise choice in any facet of life. He may have beaten DT when it counted, but I think we all know who the better wrestler was that night and every day both before and after. So, the situations were entirely different as you probably already knew when you posted.

Need to get these guys on the PSU weight and strength adding "program". Never seen so many kids move up in weight over the past 5 years and still be stronger than most everyone else.

Taken a gander at the Buckeyes? Maybe it's the tans, but they look like they're training for Mr. Olympia.

Re: Bubba-Seriously?

He was set to redshirt BEFORE Sanderson came on board. He was just coming off a season where his body shut down on him at NCAA's. He knew he was too big for 149 and wanted a year to get healthy and fill in for 157. Still, the problem was never the redshirt. It was the fact he was NOT ALLOWED to go 157. Nepotism was the ONLY true factor there and I can't see how any PSU fan would deny that. Jenkins would have wrestled if he could have gone 157, even though he didn't want to.

So a new coach comes in bringing his brother and A.)tells you you can't redshirt and B.)tells you you can't wrestle at your most comfortable weight. What would you do? And mind you he is a former Runner-up who has done a lot for the program in 3 years of loyalty.

I would feel sorry for Bubba but for the old adage - "he who laughs last, laughs best." It was truly a great moment for karma.

I was at NCAA's and the night of the semis Joseph's mom and dad walked in after his win and sat right next to us. They started talking to fans around them and his dad did say that he would be bumping up to 74 and Hall going to 65 next year.

Thank you. Sounds harmonious to me, which was my main point.

The guy that amazed me the most in that way was Nick Heflin. He bumped from 174 to 197 and still looked like a good-sized 197. BTW if anyone saw his match against Nickal this weekend, he looked a lot bigger and stronger than Bo.

Bo is a great wrestler but has never looked stronger than anyone that I have seen. He is not exactly ripped.

Is it just me or is what your asking, should wrestle offs determine who should wrestle 157, 165 and 174? After watching Young this weekend I'm not sure if he isn't the best at 165. Given the 2017/18 season I think the best man up is the right strategy.

That's true! Bo reminds me a lot of an old-time PSU wrestler named Andy Matter (2-time NCAA champ in 70's). Andy wasn't strong, but he wrestled a power-style. Bo does as well. But Bo was definitely out-horsed by Heflin. I'm sure that Brooks is stronger physically than Bo, even if Bo seemed to out-muscle him at the NCAAs. Bo wasn't out-muscling Heflin!

Can someone explain the weight needed for Young and Marinelli to move up in weight class? People are saying they should gain weight like 5 and 10 pounds this coming summer. Why haven't they already added the weight this past season, they should easily have added 5 or 10 pounds by now? Also they easily had all of this past season to gain strength and conditioning.

Agree, they should be adding the weight already. "This summer" has started. It's not easy for a wrestler to add 10lbs of muscle.

the bad thing is wrestlers are cutting weight for 4-7 months a year for competitions. Hard to gain unless it becomes a priority first vs spring/summer opens/tournaments.

I firmly believe Iowa and wrestling in general needs to embrace growth vs cutting philosophy. Starts w having the right conversations and having a knowledgeable S&C coach

I honestly don't think Marinelli's problem is going to be power, length is a bigger concern. Dude is pretty short and squat, but that's his body type. It was gratifying seeing him able to get to the legs of taller wrestlers this weekend, however I suspect he may struggle with longer guys from time to time.

Agreed. You definitely saw that with how easily Hall rubber kneed through Marinelli's takedown attempt. You could even see Marinelli get flustered once Hall ended up on top. Granted, Hall isn't the best example to use because he can do it to just about anyone, but I do think it shows where length could cause him some issues.

Hall is more of a "magic man" than Taylor in my opinon. They think they have a take down and some way he turns it into his..I have watched him for six years in high school and he wrestled all summer long also..This man is that good and if they let him go 165 I would wager he would not lose another college match. Unless sickness or injury happens. He has had better coaching before he ever even thought about which college he would choose...Every summer..

Well played my friend. Well played

Was that about 8th grade meant for me ? Hall did not win in Kentucky the champ ship in 7th grade so when he transfered to Apple Valley he enrolled in 7th grade again. Also all the summer wrestling he did he had his own coach and that is the man that made him what he is today.
