Marinelli-Hall tonight

I would assume it depends on which weight Hall plans on wrestling in Freestyle. I would assume he is planning on 163 for now. If so, he won't be going any higher than 174 and may still do 165. I would assume Marinelli is a 165 for life, but you never know. Still, I would rather Iowa have a guy with a chance to take out Hall down the road. If it isn't Marinelli, I don't see anyone else doing so!

Makes zero sense for Hall to suck to 165 if he is 163 freestyle. He needs to cut from higher than that. Also he fits at 174 for PSUs best fit. Move Nickal up a weight and there you go.

Where does Vincenzo Joseph fit into all this?

I am not sure that he does, without someone pulling a McIntosh and wrestling at a less than idea weight for the team. You also have Manville coming into that weight range. PSU will have a couple VERY good guys most likely riding the pine. Not a bad thing to have!

Nickal is not moving up next year, however Hall is redshirting. Your best bet is to go with Marinelli next year, against Cenzo. You may be correct, and Marinelli might never see Hall again, if Nickal moves up in two years, and Hall moves up to 74 for his redshirt freshman year.

Penn State has RS freshmen Nickal at 174, and Nolf at 157. Hall is likely to stay at 165 for a while.
He is not even going there right away from the sounds of it and they have Vincenzo Joseph targeted to go 165.

Well he beat Nolf last summer too. That Nolf kid is having a decent year. We need Hall to just move on to bigger and better things in freestyle like Pico. He will be wasting his time at college.

Why would Nickal go up? He has beaten Hall multiple times. If his ideal weight is 174, why move? If anything, I would think Hall would be pushed to 184.

Also, a lot of guys wrestled 165 and then 163. It's not like 174 is the only weight to prep for it.

He might as well wrestle college while some guy in Nebraska is still wrestling freestyle

Bummer, but Hall is a great one. Too bad he is going to PSU. Kind of sucks. This is why they red shirt guys. AM is not ready for D1. Getting beat soundly by a HS wrestler kind of proves that.

Both Happel and Marinelli look small for the weight they are wrestling.
Happel was certified at 138 this year and Marinelli was wrestling 160 for the first part of the year. I have heard from 2 different people, one who would know more than the other 133 is not out of the question for Happel. Not sure if it's true or not.

My understanding was that Hall will spend a year at OTC then possible RS if he feels its in the teams best interest. The kid just seems so humble to go with being immensely talented.

That said I would agree that Marinelli could well have been a lot closer if gets away clearly on his 3rd period release. And Iowa did get them a great kid. As hard as that kid works he certainly has a bright future.

Congrats.

Nolf stays at 157.. Joseph wrestles 165. Nickal at 174 next two years, then moves to 184; tall dude from Texas. Hall is a 174(after greyshirt(OTC)and then redshirt) in season beginning 2018. Best guess!!!

By that logic, Nolf was not ready for D1 this year either. Marinelli is going to be great. Hall is just special

Getting beat by Hall does not say crap about him being ready for college. Hall would be right there contending for 174 title right now. Besides that AM has a number of months of training to put in before him wrestling in college is under consideration,

I have no problem with Alex and still would project him to start if he works it this year. Hall is a creative wrestler from years of doing both free and folk. IMO, Hall could show up as is right now and place in the top 4 at 165 next week with a shot to win it...this is not hyperbole.

Don't know if Hall be wasting his time in college have no idea how smart he is and might as well get a college education. Man he is just impossible to take down. For the Penn State trolls I have to tell you I could coach Mark Hall for a champship and I don't know sh*t so don't go blowing smoke about how good Cal will coach this kid up.

This is what I heard a while back as well. Gray shirt between OTC and and NLWC. Mark wants to be a Jr World Champion. I would like to see him wrestle Burroughs just to get a barometer of where he is at on that level and how far he has to go.

Yeah Mark Halls wins over Nolf and Jojo Smith last spring makes him just some high school wrestler. You do realize both of those guys have a shot at winning a NCAA title this year right??

Really depends on the timing when Hall and Manville come on board. Both will probably RS next year, and I believe there are rumors that Hall may go OTC for a year and that Manville will gray-shirt (in addition to a RS). Right now Joseph seems to have the inside track at 165 next year. Nickal hopefully stays at 174 next season, but wouldn't be surprised if he moves up for his last 2 years, making room for Hall at 174.

The real key is for Nolf to stay at 157 for his career, and of course it's unclear whether that is realistic. That still doesn't leave room for Manville, unless he can make 149, which may be a stretch. Will be very interesting to see how this works out over the next few years.

Hall stated one of the reasons he committed to Penn State was to have Nickal as a workout partner.

Glad to see this thread turned into a PSU lineup thread.
Let's turn it back into an Iowa thread then: Marinelli should be starting at 165 next year for Iowa. Right now he is good enough to AA. That match tonight does not "prove" anything about Marinelli: He is still a true 165 pounder, and a threat to finish top 8 next year. Hall is redshirting, and it's very possible that the two will never meet again if Nickal moves up to 184 in two years, which he has the frame to do, and most likely WILL do. Marinelli makes Iowa better right away next year, keep the redshirt off him.

This should give guys the incentive to totally avoid 174. If no one shows up to wrestle Hall, eventually he may lose interest and move on. Forfeits are bad, but generally quick and less painful than reading that PBP.

Too many people giving up on Marinelli too soon. Wtf? I liked what he was doing. He has great coaches to work through the small things that made this a blowout. Tighten it up an win by one is going to be the plan...as much as we all hate that style. I'm a pessimist and I can see that he had all the tools to beat ,the intentionally held back wrestler, Mark Stall. I'm going to start that for the future.

Funny that Manville started his high school career at Apple Valley to bad he didn't stay there he sure stalls a lot now coach Jackson could have made him a lot better

It is true that Hall has lost to Nickal in the past. I don't know that is an indication of what will happen in the future. Bo in the past has been able to use big moves to score big points on Mark. Not sure he would be able to do that in the future if they are similar size. I believe there last freestyle match Hall was up a weight from he just wrestled at cadets. The last time they wrestled folkstyle several years ago, Nickall got a big lead early and Hall stormed back losing right at the end.

But I am sure PSU will figure out how to get these two talented wrestlers in the lineup.

I hope he never sees the starting line-up at PSU. Apparently he showed up 6+ pounds overweight for the meet and said "do I really have to make weight for this stupid sh!t?" and decided to forfeit so the match with Parriott was an exhibition. That is piss poor even for a high school kid.

One thing that stuck out was how athletic Marinelli is. He is going to be an animal! Not discouraged one bit by this match.

Agree. Marinelli gets numerous takedowns in that match against almost anybody not named Hall. He wasn't afraid to take a shot or let the fur fly. He will be a great one and has the mentality to thrive under TnT.

Let's go with the "Marinelli is an obvious bust" theme instead.

The guy moved up a weight and lost to arguably one of the best HS wrestler of all time and lost by major. He's clearly not going to cut it.
Alex will be a good one. Not sure who said he wouldn't be a good one. Would have liked to see him hold his own against Hall. Didn't happen. I think we all hoped for a better outcome.

I really don't think folks are "giving up" on Marinelli.

On the contrary, most have pointed out he was 1) a relatively small 170#er, 2) made a couple of mental mistakes that cost him, and 3) he showed the ability to get to Hall's legs, looked strong, and despite the final score, are optimistic about his future.

I wouldn't count out Anthony Valencia from winning a title at 174 in the future.

AM looked good tonight I thought, you guys have to remember that Mark Hall trains all over the country and AM trains in one place. He will grow as a wrestler as he is in the Iowa room and I think he will be extremely good for us.

Pretty much agree.

And regarding what a single match 'proves' at the end of a HS career.... Imar lost by TF to HS jr Anthony Valencia during his RS fr year at Jr WTT's. He seemed to do pretty well the following year, going undefeated and winning the ncaa championship.

Okay, what I thought I was reading was that people were looking for other options to beat Hall. I was at the peak of my party for this match when I posted with one eye open.

Again, I like what I see I Marinelli. Hall...once in a generation my ass. Old bastard playing the wrestling dad's game. One year makes a big difference at this level when it's this close. Our guy comes out on top in the end if they end up at the same weight.
