Under Attorney General Merrick Garland, the department is rife with politicization and dirty dealings.
And the Justice Department was just hit with another major scandal after an internal watchdog opened an investigation into Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) chief Anne Milgram over allegations of improper conduct.
Milgram is being investigated by the Justice Department’s Office of Inspector General for handing out millions of dollars in no-bid contracts to her cronies.
She was the former Attorney General of New Jersey and a law professor before becoming President Joe Biden’s top anti-drug official.
At issue is $4.7 million in taxpayer money that was used by Milgram to hire associates from her time as New Jersey Attorney General and as a law professor at New York University.
The AP reported that her cronies were given contracts “at costs far exceeding pay for government officials.”
At least a dozen people were hired by Milgram under these contracts to staff her inner circle at the DEA.
These hires handled key roles at the agency including public relations, intelligence and data analytics that are typically handled by traditional DEA employees.
“Some of these deals look very swampy,” Scott Amey, general counsel of the nonpartisan Project on Government Oversight.
Also under investigation is a $1.4 million payment to Democrat aligned law firm, WilmerHale, for an external review of the DEA’s scandal plagued foreign operations.
The broadly-criticized review glossed over DEA high-profile corruption scandals in Mexico and Colombia and downplayed the agency’s failings.
The review was co-authored by Boyd Johnson for WilmerHale, the right-hand man to former U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara.
Bharara is reportedly a close friend of Milgram and was at one time a rumored replacement for former Attorney General Eric Holder in the Obama regime.
The other co-author of the study was 87-year-old former DEA agent John Lawn, who hadn’t worked in the agency’s foreign operations since the 1980s.
Lawn worked for an alcoholic beverage industry trade group after leaving the DEA that funded a study conducted by Milgram’s mother.
The review was awarded to WilmerHale with a no-bid contract that bypassed the typical government bidding process because of alleged “urgency.”
WilmerHale was supposed to complete the review in six months at most but ended up taking a year and a half to finish its work.
Former DEA official Matthew Donahue said the review was “a complete waste of taxpayers’ money.”
He led the DEA’s foreign operations before retiring after not seeing eye to eye with Milgram.
“It’s something that could’ve been written in three days,” Donahue added.
Now Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) was forced to open an investigation into WilmerHale’s connections to Milgram.
The DEA being embroiled in scandal is another blackeye for the embattled Justice Department under Merrick Garland.
