taking a long time to craft their response to the WI brawl. Practice as usual today I’d guess. My guess is they are drafting a Howard apology response as well. It will be a severe hand slap with a wet noodle and a warning they might do it again if he attacks some else.

Has the league come out with a statement? Seems awfully quiet but am assuming there is a lot going on behind closed doors on this one.

If Howard was sorry about the incident, he should have apologized at his presser yesterday. Any attempt now would look like a phony attempt by Michigan to smooth things over. Howard's a true Michigan Man.
He is a tough guy from Chicago so its cool for him to charge at Turgeon last year or throw a haymaker at a WISC assistant. Dude does not have the decorum to be a BIG coach.

If Michigan was smart they would get their punishment out before the league does. Save some face by taking swift action, don't just take what the league gives him. You've got your own head basketball coach that smacked another coach and then a player who took another coach to the ground and then got up swinging.

Wisconsin should too, but I'm guessing they won't since they let Davison get away with everything. But #0 (Neath I think) should have already been suspended by the school for his act in the altercation.

A coach that throws a punch/slap/aggressive physical contact of any kind toward an opposing coach or player has to be suspended. I'd think at least 2 games at a bare minimum, but no problem with it being through the remainder of the season. That is a bright line that no coach should be allowed to cross without significant penalty.

Gard absolutely needs a suspension as part of the instigation and escalation of the issue. I'd want to give him multiple games as well given his history of promoting thuggery on his team, but that should be addressed by the league separately. The fact that he promotes that kind of play with having probably the dirtiest player in the B1G of the past 10 years whom he praises, and that he is now promoting that same kind of play among the rest of his roster, needs to be cracked down on. Hard.

Not apples to apples by any means but does anyone remember what punishment Laimbeer got for slapping Sir Charles 30 or so years ago?

Gard and Krabbenhoft (things were about to get separated before he said something that made the Michigan player go absolutely nuts. Then pushed the Michigan player after the Michigan player reacted to what Krabbenhoft said. Then that’s when Howard lunged at him after taking his eye contact off Gard. ) should get 1 game each.
Howard at minimum should be done rest of regular season.

It’s insane that the B1G nor Michigan has commented on this.
I agree. Do you suppose the BIG would be silent if this had been the coach at, say, Iowa?

Nobody expects a rush to judgment, but the BIG should have come out immediately with a statement something like this:

"The Big Ten is investigating the incident at the end of the Michigan-Wisconsin game. Such altercations have no place in athletic competition, and the Big Ten will take appropriate action once the facts have been determined."

But to say nothing is absolutely wrong.

It’s insane that the B1G nor Michigan has commented on this. The only reason is obvious - $$$$$$.

Your right the $1500-2000/hour they are paying to lawyers to review the actions and public announcements within the context of all the contracts, school policies, and league policies will add up quickly.

That is the reality of what is going on today, but I doubt that is what you meant.

The Big Ten made the following statement yesterday within hours of the incident:

2/20/2022 4:18:39 PM

Big Ten Conference Statement

The Big Ten Conference is aware of a physical altercation involving Michigan Head Coach Juwan Howard at the conclusion of the Michigan Wolverines and Wisconsin Badgers men’s basketball game. The conference is in contact with both member institutions and is currently assessing the incident. The conference will provide more information and will take swift and appropriate disciplinary action when it completes its review.

Ed Martin must be rolling over in the grave to know his hard earned money was spent on someone like Juwan

I'm guessing Juwan approved his suspension prior to it being handed down. I thought there was a no violence policy for State of Michigan employees. Can't wait for the the first person to hit someone and claim the Juwan defense.

Still boggles my mind that Gard isn't getting more blame here. This literally would have never happened if Gard didn't didn't make physical contact in the first place. I give Howard credit for trying to slide past the handshake - he knew his emotions would get better of him. Gard made sure that happened.

If an 18-year-old player did the same thing, he would have gotten the exact same punishment - suspended for the rest of the season. How does UM not hold this guy to a higher standard? This guy is supposed to be a mentor for crying out loud.

He violently assaulted another coach and apparently, none of his superiors has the balls to do the right thing. Absolutely shameful.

They would have made a statement by the end of the night it happened, and there is no limit to what they would’ve slapped Fran with. He would be potentially looking at never coaching in-conference again.

Anything less than suspended for the rest of the season is a joke. I’m confident the conference will suspend him maybe indefinitely.
My understanding is the league can only impose a two game suspension. Any thing more serious will have to come from the University......

All the coaches shook hands until Juwan. He was being a dick! Not saying Gard is blameless but come on. Juwan’s team got their a** kicked and he couldn’t accept getting beat. If he wants to get upset about a time out it should be with Chris Webber.

The relationship team did a nice job of creating a public apology for Howard. They blew their response stating there was no room for this behavior at Michigan and then provided that room in their discipline. They have no moral compass and if there hadn’t been so much video evidence they would have gone with Howard’s version of the event.

Do you guys think we fire Fran if that happens? I say no. I’m sure Michigan isn’t happy with the whole situation at all. There was a lot of dumb on all sides. Juwan should have just kept walking as should have Gard. Wisconsin asst coach also instigated shit as well. Plenty of blame to go around. I’ve been watching how Wisconsin acts after a few of their wins taunting opponent fans and such as well. I’m fine with the 5 games. Hopefully he learns. If not he’ll eventually get fired. He was the coach of the year last year so he’s got a pretty long leash in my opinion.

Didn’t Howard threaten to kill Turgeon last year? If so, a suspension for the rest of the year is an extremely mild penalty.
