Michigan and Harbaugh = Failure

I've been told over and over and over again that salary's got nothing to do with it.

I would agree. The way Harbaugh started (winning lots of games right away) had everyone saying he was the best ever. From the Iowa loss in 2016 onward, Michigan hasn't been very good (at least by their standards). Going 8-5 at Michigan is a bit different than going 8-5 at Iowa, especially when the Wolverines lost to every good team on their schedule.

Still think he likely does well at Michigan, if he can get any QB play at all. He is recruiting so well they have enough athletes everywhere to be good.

Jim Harbaugh last 3 seasons
28-11 over all
18-8 in conference
1-3 in Bowl games

Kirk Ferentz last 3 seasons.
28 - 12 over all
18-8 in conference
1-3 in Bowl games
But you guys are correct. Jim Harbaugh sucks and I hope Michigan keeps him for a long time.

Any decent coach would have more success at Michigan. Anyone could get more talent to come to Ann Arbor than Iowa city. The expectations there should be higher than ours.

Next year could be interesting, that former 5star QB, Shea Patterson is transferring from Ole Miss, not sure if in time for spring ball or not.

There were comments during the Outback bowl that if Harbaugh doesn't beat OSU pretty soon, he's going to run out of chances.

Winning with teams in year 1 & 2 means the previous coach could recruit.
A worse record in years 3 & 4 means you can't recruit or your players don't get better playing for you.

Harbaugh better perform this year or could be more than his car seats warming his backside.

Steve Deace has a good Michigan instant reaction podcast outlining his concerns. He mentioned the data analytics for losing a game when up 16 or more with a plus 3 advantage in TOs at that point of the game were something like 0.0022%. Wow.

https://t.co/MhLy4sPezC?ssr=true

Not going to give Deace a click, but I don't understand how turnover margin - at the time of the 16 point lead could matter. That 16 point lead is supported by those turnovers, is there a correlation between turnovers and more turnovers?

Hail to the victors! Ooops. Michigan and their genius coach just gave away a game after having a 16-point lead and, in doing so, stopped the Big Ten from going 8-0 this bowl season. Four TOs in the second half. Multiple dropped passes. That was one ugly performance by the boys from Ann Arbor.
Congrats, fellas. Wish you were on Iowa's schedule twice every season.

5 TO's! Even worse.

He's way better than you guys are giving him credit for. I can't stand a lot of the antics but I'd have him as my coach anyday.
Thats interesting, because as expected there are certainly Michigan alums who are pretty sure they don't want him as their coach anymore. That tweet by Amani Toomer during the game was not the first rumbling and it sure as hell won't be the last. It's going to get real loud in Ann Arbor if Jimbo loses to OSU and MSU again next year.

This is spot on. Every coach should hope that his predecessor is like John Blake (who preceded Bob Stoops at Oklahoma), a great recruiter and terrible coach. That formula gives the new coach a chance to succeed right out of the gate. For his faults as a coach, Hoke seemed to leave a decent cupboard at Michigan (perhaps other than at QB).

Harbaugh did turn around Stanford. But he only had to hit on one QB recruit to do so. In his two seasons before Andrew Luck, he went 4-8 and 5-7. With Luck, he went 8-4 and 11-1. It is fair to ask whether Harbaugh is a QB guru, or whether Luck was just that good.

They were predicted to be 3rd in the East before they ended up using their 3rd string, freshman QB. Things didn't turn out to far from predictions
The problem for Michigan is, the two guys ahead of Peters aren't worth a damn either, and look just as lost as he did yesterday. So WHOM exactly is responsible for that?

See Urban Meyer at Florida...........

You had to type that last part and ruin that possibility, didn't you? ;-)

I know! Ugh, believe me, I thought about that while watching the games last night. I counted the chickens before they hatched. Horrible CFP results. I wonder how low the ratings will be for the "championship" game?

Are there Iowa fans that really believe KF should be able to recruit at the same level as MI?
I won't waste your time, having you list all of the recruiting advantages that Michigan has over Iowa. That way I don't have to waste my time destroying your list of excuses. Fair enough?

Fair enough. I don’t like debating with people who have no college football knowledge. You fall into that catagory”thinks they know a lot” but “only know enough to be dangerous”

No matter how much we want it to be the case, Iowa and Michigan are not the same. One is the winningest program in history, with a large recruiting base; one is not.

Agree. On both points.

Go back to Scout.

How would you compare Michigan's recruiting base to, oh say, Alabama's?
How would you compare Illinois recruiting base to Michigan?
How about Oregon, when Kelly was there? Oregon's state population is what? 4 million?

I can't figure out why Illinois and Syracuse don't win National Championships in football with those huge advantages in recruiting.
Population of NY = 20 million
Population of Illinois = 13 million
Population of Alabama = 5 million
What gives?

I guess scout believes Saban could take a head coaching job like Vanderbilt and in a few years have them in the playoffs. Funny how much better iOS a coach he is at Alabama than he was at Michigan State.

But...but...the recruiting advantages?

I could see Harbaugh coming to here to Indy. His QB, he has his number in the ring of whatever, plus he and the new GM may just mesh. I'm not a fan but they're not that far away from being above average competitive, quickly, especially if Luck is 100%...... And JH is a damn good pro coach.

You never know.

I'd love to dismiss them but even in yrs 1-3 (much of team not his recruits) he had a better record that kirk in 17-19 and that includes outlier 2015.

Oh, and schedule....besides facing MSU, PSU, and OSU every yr being in the east, they were playing the likes of Florida, Utah, BYU, Colorado, Cincinnati, Oregon St, Air Force, and UCF in the non conference...some decent programs there. We know who we played.

Sorry, but if Harbaugh's a failure, kirk is too (neither of them are). Michigan will be just fine if they find a qb.

What is the most important advantage?

You told me above it was a “waste of time” so I’ll respect that. I’m smart enough to realize not every HS kid is like me and pass on scholarship offers to walk on for the Hawkeyes. I spent 7 years as a DIII coach trying to convince parents and HD kids to come play for me with no athletic scholarship money, many times recruiting against schools offering rides. I know what it’s like to have recruiting disadvantages. Have you toured Iowa’s and Michigan’s facilities? I have. Have you seen where athletes live at these schools? Hey Iowa has ALOT to sell, the new facility is IMPRESSIVE. But to think Iowa should be “outrecruiting” MI year in and year out is not realistic.

Go look at UMs recruiting class so far this year. Then compare it to OSU and PSU's. Hairball will be lucky to be there more than 2 more years.
