Midlands Finals Thread

Aside from a sloppy 1st period by ADS, he out wrestled him. You simply can't give a guy like Gross 4 first period points and try to make it up.

With those TDs Gross neutralized his pace and slowed it down. He avoids the early mental brain farts and he probably wins.
Gross is damn good first and foremost. He had a game plan and executed it (tie Austin up and rest). Gross even did the one arm behind the back RBY trick for a tiny bit I believe.

DeSanto can't roll with someone with Gross's length, and let them kill clock in the process. Both guys wrestled good, it was a good match but IMO you can tell Gross is scared to go toe to toe with DeSanto. Hard to believe from a National Champion but that's what I saw.

We can handle Gross in the future, not easily but very doable, again. We certainly don't have anything to fear about Gross who will be tough for anybody, but I'd favor DeSanto, which stuns me to say for what I thought would happen coming into this year.

Wrestling coaches have learned how to abuse it, football refs have learned how throw games with it based on the big money calling the shots upstairs.
They try to convince you didn't see what you did.
It's laughable.

Great showing for Abe and a good look at where he needs to improve. Good handfightng. Good defense. Some nice attacks. Finishes aren't quite there yet and he needs some work on bottom. 184 of the future.

Reminds me of the adjustments Bull had to make to beat Wick on a consistent basis...don't get caught underneath, expend energy only to get outfunked. Have to beat a guy like that with doubles above the knees or a single at an angle.

Assad did get pretty dang close to one but was just a little ways off. To make it seem like he was never in it is disingenuous.

On the scoring record it is probably important to note how weak Midlands has gotten. I am sure better teams from Iowa have gone to this tournament, not to take away from breaking the record though, that is still cool.

Always here to keep it real, eh?

Max really looks to be improving on his areas of opportunity from last year. Really glad to see this.

I concur...thought he looked really good tonight. Hope he can keep improving/progressing as the season goes and perhaps give us a few more points than many were originally thinking. Congrats to him for bringing home the gold!! :)

Lugo looked the best I've ever seen him. Slicker than hell in that match. Great job.

I'm with you, brother. He looked "slicker than hell" and mega-confident. If he can keep that engine going, take some sweet shots like he did tonight, and keep that confidence up, he is going to be a tough out. I think AOC is going to get better as the season progresses, but I don't know that he's going to improve enough to beat the same Lugo we saw tonight! I actually had a couple tears in my eyes when Lugo took home the gold...very impressive!!

He was up 5-3 and then MFF. Bloody nose. Not real sure why.

Well, actually he popped his ankle in the 1st period. For those with access to the video, you can see it happen shortly after the 1:25 mark in the video (with about 1:45 left in the 1st period). Have to assume the ankle is the reason he did not continue

yep. Cut out during the last scramble in regulation!

Heck, I thought it was my computer the first time...even smacked by monitor on the side a couple times to see if I could bring it back to life. LOL! On my end the three times I really noticed were all during major scrambles. The Flo boys were all excited so I knew some good stuff was going on. I really wanted to see the one where the Bull drove McFadden to the concrete floor and then graciously helped McFadden back to his feet. Good sportsmanship!

If such a thing is possible, that felt like a pretty dominant 5-3 victory for Marinelli. McFadden had nothing for him.

I concur, Chuck. This is the most confident and impressive I've seen Alex. He is definitely a man on a mission and I hope he can make his mark this year. Hated how his last two NCAAs went, especially last year when as the 1 seed he got the draw from hell. Really hope this is his year...amazing talent and hell of a kid!

Lujan didn't do shit the whole match.
Abe needs to finish shots, he had many opportunities.
Lujan way to crafty for the young guy.

That''s what I thought as well (WRT Lujan being too crafty). When I mentioned the "what if Assad does well, do we pull the shirt" scenario, those on here who have clearly been around the block a time or two indicated that he needed this year to get his game together, and clearly they are right. Assad has incredible talent, and perhaps with a year in the room he can come out looking like Big Tony. What an amazing difference for Cass between last year's match with Stencel and this year's match. What a difference that year made!

I wouldn't want Abe's red shirt pulled unless he bonused his way thru this tournament. He's just not that much better than what we have, if at all. But he wrestled well even in the loss, future is bright, I'm happy to wait to see it.

Incredible with Cass, I didn't expect him to win. Not a bash on Cass he just hasn't been tested yet other than Hilger.
Very impressive win by the big man.
We are set at heavy for years. :)

Stencil is very solid, took it to Cass last year here. Kid is progressing nicely

I am so impressed with Cass. What a huge difference between their last meeting and this one. Stencel was all over him last year, and after today's match must have been thinking to himself, "where the hell did this all come from?" Cass was all over him and never stopped. Stencel had nothing for him. Cass is incredibly strong, has an impressive gas tank for a big man, moves very well, and is always looking to do damage. Just so impressed! With the strength of the HWT division, Cass will have a tough time bringing home the gold, but nothing he does would surprise me. What a talent!! Really look forward to seeing him in the duals with Minnesota and PSU (if Cassar is able to go).

My friend, you are not alone. I was wondering how much he could improve against Stencel and like you had a feeling that Stencel would pull it out one way or another. And it has nothing to do with confidence in Cass, but as others have indicated, it's never easy beating crafty veterans. And I concur, we are definitely looking good at 285.

I concur. As one of the other fellas mentioned about Brands...he wrestled a couple good matches, but then came back down to earth. We would be very unhappy if TnT pulled the shirt after an outstanding tournament and then Assad came back down to earth and finished in the R12 or even 7th or 8th. Like others have said, he has the talent to do serious damage for 4 years, so I concur that keeping the shirt on and going with Brands or Wilcke make sense. Speaking of which, I'm wondering if Midlands solved that dilemma. My gut says "no." LOL. :)

I wouldn’t at all be disappointed if they pulled the shirt and he ended up an AA.

Spot on.

That was a great match in spite of everything! I can't wait to see them wrestle again. Sebass vs Gross was also great. Wondering now if Sebass and Gross will wrestle before the big 10 tournament? Seeding could be a huge advantage!
It won't happen as one of them will have a hang nail and won't wrestle just to save their ranking...

Love my team but the fact I have $184 in my bank account that limped down from $197 is slightly disturbing. I'm not a rich man but I pray more for the Hawks.

Just catching up on some of the matches on YouTube. Pat Lugo looked phenomenal.
Is Iowa the favorite to win a team national title?
When do the new rankings come out? Lugo should be #1 and DeSanto should be #2-3?

Anyway, I'm pissed. Having cold ones with wife in Panama City Beach.
No pic of wife.
You Horn Dogs need to go back to Pornhub. Lol
How's the weather? We thought about a family driving trip there- any tips for where to go / what to do? Beaches and bike trails?

Even with Glosser and Turk having great tourneys, Lugo left no doubt as to who our 149lber should be. Wish 184 went the same. Congrats Pat! We have a new #1 at 149. Great tourney for him and Max and a good start tonight. Now it is Kalebs turn.
Riddle me this,Batman. If Glosser is hurt will he qualify for a 6th year or for that matter has Turk already qualified? Just wondering if next year's 49lbr is currently in the room.

I guess I never thought about that. That is a good question as Glosser has always been very good and Turk looks much better this year than in the past. With 149 down this year, I think they both would have a shooter's chance of AA this year if Lugo wasn't here. It at the very least would give us very good depth next year at 149 if Murin moved up or Jayden moved up. They both would start almost anywhere else in the country.

I had this thought about Turk. I was at Luther when he hurt his shoulder that year. He had one or two matches that season. If Murin looks like the guy at 141 this year or next (he doesn’t look like a 149 to me, and I think Eierman takes his shot to qualify for the OTT) then I gotta think Turk would be a AA/top 5 type guy at 149 next season. Who knows, fun to speculate.

Murin is a tall 141 with a big frame. He could beef into 149 easily and still have leverage.
I think he finishes this year and next year is Eierman and Murin manning 41-49 in some fashion.

Always possible. Shoot I was skeptical on Kem as well. Sometimes when you stop the cut, your body explodes. I just hope the staff has considered all of these options... (sarcasm.) ;)
