Iowa made the news once again for racial remarks to opposing athletes, this time in the MMA community. RBY jumped on a smaller podcast and had quite a few good talking points (link to YT below). Among them was a rather unfortunate comment that while competing in carver he was called the N word by at least one crappy fan. I've never seen anything like this at my time in carver but it's certainly not a good look that this has been brought up more than once this season now.

I’ve been going to Carver for 20 years with season tickets; never once have I heard a racial slur whispered let alone yelled. I obviously can’t say with 100% certainty it hasn’t happened, but I truly believe this is just a new way of trying to make Iowa look horrible to future recruits and parents.

There are idiots and aholes everywhere. Fans should condemn these people.

It may be a cesspool, but we treat everyone fairly, and we love us some Charles Matthews and Gabe Arnold, and that standing O to Steveson was one of the cooler things I've been apart of in Carver

Just asking if you are a journalist because if you listen to the whole video and state facts instead of just part of the interview to push a certain narrative. Yes he says a fan said it and by no means do I think the fan was in the right but he does say he was first called rbstall he then gave the fan the bird and the fan reacted to that. Once again fan took it to far but if some wrestler flipped me off from a rival school I guess I would be a little hot also.

First, I don’t understand why an Iowa fan would post this on our boards. What good does it do except spread a false narrative that Iowa wrestling fans are a racist group. I would guess that there is one or several fans who sit down by the floor or near the tunnel that are doing this and it shouldn’t be difficult to find them. Ban them, make an example of them. This is not an ‘Iowa’ thing this is a crappy human thing and unfortunately they are everywhere. If you see this behavior call it out, report them. If the wrestler hears this than so do surrounding fans. Maybe because Carver brings in so many fans it’s easier to hide behind this behavior, but as a whole I don’t believe for one second that Iowa fans are any more racist/stupid than any other fan base.

He's not an Iowa fan. That's his point to try and make Iowa look bad.

I have never heard anything close to a racial slur at cha. I've heard a lot yelled by some worked up fans, but not racial slurs. Truth is that word makes most people cringe. I honestly believe that the people I'm at cha with wouldn't allow anyone around us to yell it. I think going forward that is the key, because it is a really small number of fans sullying the greatest wrestling atmosphere.

This is really the dumbass answer. But don’t mind me…

I’ve actually never heard a racial slur at any sporting event I’ve ever been to at any level, going back to the seventies.

I know it happens, but I think it has to be rare. Of course, a black athlete is far more likely to hear it than me!

If this is happening is there really no one at Carver with an ounce of integrity to call this person out and point him out to get him removed? The people who are claiming they’ve heard it and do nothing must be spineless b*tches.

Stop blaming people who didn’t hear abusive language. And stop thinking that it had to come from someone far enough away from the athlete for many people to hear it other than the intended recipients.

Nobody has to be lying or guilty of doing nothing.when.they.heard.nothing.

There are going to be bad apples in most every barrel. Even if they are few and far between.

And btw, they are rare in my experience in Iowa.

Of course someone shouted something racist at a wrestling match. There are 16k people at cha?. Let’s assume that 10% of those people have no filter and would say the words loudly proudly and in public. That’s 1600 ppl per match. I am fairly sure at least 10% of those people show up liquored up. That’s 160 ppl per match we are saying didn’t behave like j/o’s despite predisposition. Over time, that wall will crack.

The average ncaa match sadly isn’t getting 160 people in general. If you extrapolate this across the board, I’m sure it happens everywhere that the shouter wouldn’t feel alone.

It’s not unique to carver, Iowa, or wrestling. It’s sadly some people in society, and those people are everywhere. If it happens more at carver, I think it’s simply the having more people in a room (and thus more chances) than I think it’s anything else.

Or even one percent would be sufficient to have a potential negative impact in CHA.

I’m not going to call rby a liar so if this is true then i would hope the fans sitting next to the guy who said it would put them in their place. nobody should be making racist comments period.

Why would someone have to be sitting down to throw out a slur? That would be potentially dangerous to slur spitter.

I’m going more with a person who manages to get close enough to athlete to get their point across but on the move to avoid being held responsible by their neighbors in the stands.

Why does this remind me of all the people jumping on board to accuse people of sexual misconduct in Hollywood? Not to say that those people didn’t do those horrific things or that these words weren’t used at carver. But…some of it seems kind of fishy. Why are we just hearing about rby and his alleged incident now? Is it because he wasn’t offended at the time enough to bring it up? He’s had a pretty big platform for a while now. Anywho, I truly hope none of these things happened. Most likely, some of them did. Or there’s some truth to some of them but hey, where’s the proof everyone was talking about. Surely someone has footage of rby at least flipping the bird…In this day and age, you can’t pick your nose in your car without someone having it on camera.
