Moss

I dont think he is leaving. He is going to be #1a/b/c scorer next year with him, Cook and JBo. Next years team could be fun to watch pending how they develop over the summer. I also wonder what that tweet meant, but not looking to much into it.

Hopefully his tweet just means that he's been holding back some how, and now he's just gonna let it all out on the court.

If you watch he sits Moss way to much!!! The other players screw up also and none of them sit for the lo g period of times like Moss does. They better not screw this up with Moss. He is the o e player that affects the game on both ends of the court. Hopefully nothing to read here. That would really hurt this program if he leaves hope he stays. Go Hawks

But how do you think it feels to him to play such great first halves against Nebraska and Minnesota (both road games) and effectively keep his team in the game, but then down the stretch he rides the pine? That doesn't make much sense to me. I'm sure to him it is a slap in the face.

It's not a good thing to leave a cryptic message like that. One has to know by doing that he will have to answer to the team, family, friends, and media.

He is a player I really enjoy watching and believe to be our future go to scorer.

Hopefully this is a message to start winning and stop losing!

He is the most complete player our roster. In my opinion, he should be playing big minutes. Hope he is not going anywhere.

Of all the Frosh this would make the least sense.

He will start next year for sure and probably be one of the top scoring options on the team. Also, he already redshirted so you would think he would have already made a move if that is what he wanted.

If he stays great. If he leaves I won't lose any sleep over it.

11.7 PER and .062 WS/40 are not good. He's actually been one of the least efficient contributors on the team this season.

McCaffery, Ellingson and Dailey would be sufficient to hold down the sg position next season.

I like Moss but he's pretty hot and cold. He doesn't stand out at all when you review the Iowa stats. Like Cook, he is very athletic and that makes him appear to be better than what the end product is. Of course, I hope he stays, but I don't think he should be starting, except maybe to get off to a quick start, which hasn't happened at all the past couple of games. I don't think he shares the ball like some of the others, has a poor shooting percentage except for layups and has less than a third of the rebounds of Baer or Pemsl. I think he has quickness and athleticism and needs to do more with those talents.

That might leave us with the least athletic backcourt in D1.

He could still develop. I will say that Marble was pretty shaky his first year. Moss right now relies too much on athleticism and doesn't contribute much outside of the occasional volume shooting. He's a mediocre defender and he only averages 1.6 boards and 0.8 assists per game.

Either you can play or you can't. What good is 'athleticism' when it only contributes 1.6 rebounds, 0.8 assists and 0.4 steals per game? Ellingson has been a better on the ball defender than Moss this season and that's a low bar.

I dissagree. Moss is our best perimiter defender other than maybe Williams.

He clearly has latteral mobility that is way above Ellingson.

Ellingson plays less aggressively and therefore is out of position less but he lacks the mobility to gaurd quicknesd.

Moss can actually pressure the ball.

Saying you can either play or not implies that ability to play doesn't improve with experience. Which is obviously untrue.

You either have athleticism or you dont would be an accurate statement.

What are his minutes per game? I would guess less than 20. He is one of best finishers in transition I have seen in a Hawkeye uniform. Not to knock our other perimeter players as they all have some strengths, but Moss has the exact qualities our roster cannot afford to lose.

Trust me I understand that completely and get baffled by Fran's use of him in the 2nd half. He is a good enough free throw shooter to be in at the end. He is athletic enough to make an impact on both ends in the final minutes. I don't get why he is sitting and hope that isn't the case that he is leaving. I would be surprised if he does, but who knows with kids. He is one of the most athletic players we have and will be a huge option next year.

The advanced metrics just don't correlate with your subjective eye test.

He's currently 11th on the entire roster for defensive box +/- with a -0.6.

His assist % (8.7) is 13th on the roster ahead of only Tyler Cook. That's abysmal for a wing.

His steal % (1.3) is 10th on the roster ahead of only regular players Kriener and Uhl. Once again horrible for a wing. By contrast, Christian Williams has a 3.4 steal %. Even Peter Jok, not exactly a defensive presence, has a 2.1 steal %.

The one thing he's supposed to excel at is his offensive ability and he ranks 10th on the team with a 11.7 PER ahead of only one regular player, Williams.

I don't know how you arrive at the notion that he's our best perimeter defender. If anything, he's been a liability defensively.

Like every player on the roster, he has holes. He is interesting because he does things that can't be taught, like attacking the basket and scoring in transition. Just a few points to ponder.

He has been inconsistent, but just 1 game ago (Minnesota) he had probably his best game as Hawkeye, 19 points, 3 reb, 3 assists, 2 blocks, made 3-5 from 3-point land. Scored 7 straight to take the game from a 11-4 deficit to tied at 11 early in the game.
I don't see how shooting poorly except for layups is a detriment. Part of being a good player is being able to get layups, which is not something our guards overall are good at. Moss is making 48% of his 2-point shots, which is equal to Jok and better than every other guard in the rotation. He is making 37.5% of his 3-point shots, which trails only Ellingson. By comparison, Bohannon makes 32% of his 2-pointers and 36% of his 3-pointers and he's considered a good shooter by most fans. Of course, Bohannon gets assists and does a good job of protecting the ball.

The point is there are weaknesses with every player on the roster, which explains why the team is 14-12. Moss is interesting because his upside is there due to his athleticism.

I suppose you didn't like Marcellus Sommerville's potential either before he transferred to Bradley. Moss is a 2 guard playing part time, not sure why you are expecting him to be lighting up the assists/rebounds when he primarily plays with Bohannon and Jok and doesn't handle the ball all that much.

I love the straw man arguments but you're missing the point. If you cared to read the last several posts you'd see it's not an argument simply about gross volume. I'm looking at advanced utilization metrics in which minutes aren't critical.

For example Dailey has played even fewer minutes and is also not a primary ball handler. He still has a better .09 WS/40, 13.4 PER, 11.1 rebound % and 2.4 steal %.

The argument about potential is also irrelevant. I never said he couldn't eventually develop into a decent player. If you see the above comment regarding Marble that's apparent. I'm simply talking about his current production which indicates a very limited player.

Who have we lost to that we are better than?

Looks like that went right over your head. We crucified Monte Morris for claiming that ISU was better than Iowa after a loss only to have Aaron White's comments resurface during a losing stretch toward the end of his career when he stated he was tired of losing to teams we were better than.

I would also say we are better than:
University of Nebraska-Omaha
Illinois
Nebraska
Possibly Minnesota, Michigan State, Memphis, and Seton Hall.

If you're well-versed in metrics, you know that Dailey's numbers lack any significant statistical credibility, correct?

Certainly 89 minutes is a very small sample size. We could alternatively compare with others from the current roster like Ellingson or past teams' wings. It doesn't change the fact that Moss has very poor numbers this season.

Ellingson in conference play is leading the entire team with a .117 WS/40 and 7th on the team with a 16.2 PER. Ellingson also has limitations but he's not counter productive. He has the best turnover % and the 3rd best assist % on the team.

When you have a 14-12 team you have liabilities. Moss is currently one of those for Iowa.

If he stays maybe he'll become a much better player. As of know he's not.

Some guys do develop. Crazy, right?

People wanted Brady to transfer after last year. Now, he has improved his game in many ways. Moss has shown flashes of being able to take over a game offensively. He has also shown some great defensive skills as well. It's all about rounding out your game and being consistent. That takes time.

All those metrics are good, but please name the one player on this team that can do all of the following: 1)take a jump shot with someone on him, 2)take the ball to the hole off the dribble with a realistic shot of scoring, 3) shoot FT with a decent percentage and 4)play defense on the perimeter. IMO, only Moss can do all of these. I will agree that Moss does get lazy on defense at times (but when Jok is your mentor, why not) and sometimes out of sync on offense but with a focus on the perimeter for Jok to have the ball, it limits Moss. Outside of Cook, Moss has the most upside and we need to nurture that. I'm just afraid that the a future player by the same name as the coach will get every opportunity to play next year and further limit Moss time and development.

The future player by the same name as the coach is also a 4* top 120 recruit. If Moss is good enough it wouldn't hurt his minutes. In fact, they could play on court at the same time at both wings.

I love Isaiah's game. Been following him since he was at Simeon. I agree with everything you said above except the part about not being able to be further nurtured because of Connor coming in. From someone who played for their father growing up, I can almost guarantee you that Connor will have to earn every bit of playing time he gets and then some. Lots of time to the detriment of the son (I'm not still bitter at all).

I don't believe Moss would transfer. He already used his redshirt year and would burn a year of eligibility to move on to another D1 institution.

However, if he leaves the team and he does so because of playing time -- see ya, happy to see you go. The last thing you need on a team full of young talented players is for a average freshman with a Cinderella complex from disrupting the team for no good reason.

Everyone is making a lot out of a 4 word tweet.

If there's smoke in the post......Moss can be a key part of our future, but next year it has to be at the two. With the bigs coming in we'll be needing minutes at the three to ease that log jam. If we assume Jo Bo at the point with Conner backing him up, that leaves Brady, Moss, and Williams at the two. If Conner wins the 2 guard spot and Williams backs up the point it gets a bit crowded with Brady and Moss off the bench.

These last few games of league play should give us a bunch of insight to the future, but I don't see a bunch of people leaving.
