Gotta tell ya fellas...

First and foremost, I loved seeing Lee take the mat. To me that means that he's all about the big picture (NCAA championship and the team) and not worrying about the Hodge and who he does and doesn't bonus. I think the way for him to test his physical situation is by getting on the mat with some of the hammers and letting it fly.

Second, I don't know about you all but that was the least enjoyable Iowa dual I've watch in the last 2 or 3 years, particularly from Jaydin on. I didn't like the way NC State seemed to be focused on wrestling on the edge in case they got in trouble (stalling 101), and I hated the possibility of losing the dual, especially after Kaleb gave up the fall. With the hammers we have we should not be in a questionable situation against anyone other than perhaps our arch-enemy. But at the same time I'm glad we were able to recover from that situation.

Kudos to Brands and Assad for wrestling smart and not giving up bonus points. I actually thought Brands might pull it off. And though Hidlay had the one big move against Assad, I liked the way Assad looked this weekend. Hopefully he'll keep improving the more he goes out there. Finally kudos to Big Tony for saving me from a heart attack after almost causing one. I think his new physique looks impressive, but I just don't see the benefit on the mat just yet. Maybe it'll take the Winter/Spring months to get adjusted.

Off to take a couple Xanax. Kidding of course, but it sounds good. LOL!

Good time for Midlands. Hawks got work to do. KY needs to get this turned around. Good for JWar, he is the man tonight. NC State is a good team but I didnt see one loss we couldnt turn into a win in a rematch from tonight.
Concur. We just don't seem to be the aggressors at more than a few weights and I feel like we're letting teams take the wresting to us instead of vice-versa. We've been giving some of these opposing wrestlers hope and that's a dangerous thing. We need to make them wrestle our matches which I'm just not seeing as much as I would like.

Everybody we wrestle is going to take the action to the edge. Better get used to it.

We need to expect different kind of wins from a lot of our guys. Lee is going out there with zero ACLs and will face guys who refuse to engage and position themselves for bonus point losses. Same with ADS. 149 is a mystery. I love Kaleb Young and what he's done for our program but he's fairly mediocre. Bull should be fine and hopefully we see Kem at some point. 184 and 197 are inconsistent. Cass is a beast and will deliver.

I just think anyone expect us to roll through this season and a coronation at NCAAs had better revisit their expectations.

zero urgency from brands as usual. just content to handfight and posture.
Based on the way the dual was going up to the time Brands took the mat, I think his hand-fighting and avoiding the big move was the right play. Had 157 ended differently I think Brands and Assad would have wrestled the Hidlay boys a little differently...at least I hope.

so far, is there anyone on this team that looks better than last year?

this team is not wrestling to its capabilities. maybe that’s a good thing and they’ll be fresh in march, but not an impressive start to the year.

This is exactly how I felt. Thought there was something wrong with me. Glad I am not alone.

Points well taken. Again, I love that Lee is out there determining what he can and can't do in his situation; I think it will make him more tourney ready come March. And I don't expect us to roll through the season, but I do hope to enjoy chips and a Mountain Dew when our 8th ranked guy is going against someone outside the top 20 or when our top 2-3 guys are wrestling guys outside the top 15 and top 20. Instead I almost choked on my fricking Doritos....several times. But this team is definitely entertaining.

hope i'm wrong, but don't like the siebrecht call here. match up more likely to give up bonus.
I hope I'm wrong but Eirman's undisciplined and shoot from the hip style could keep us from a National Championship. Too many crazy matches that shouldn't be that crazy.

Hawkeyes Top NC State, 19-15, at Collegiate Wrestling Duals

NICEVILLE, Florida -- The top-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team defeated fifth-ranked North Carolina State, 19-15, on Tuesday in the Red Division finals of the Collegiate Wrestling Duals.

Iowa won six of 10 matches to defeat the Wolfpack and extend its winning streak to 24, the longest in the nation.

“Any time you compete you’re going to get tested,” said Iowa head coach Tom Brands. “Even shutouts or (matches) lopsided on paper, you still have to be ready to go. We talked about entitlement at the beginning of the year. No one is laying down for us. You see that every time out.”

The Hawkeyes won the first three matches to build a 10-0 team lead. Top-ranked Spencer Lee opened with a 6-1 decision at 125. Austin DeSanto put bonus points on the board with a 16-7 major decision at 133, and Jaydin Eierman scored a takedown with 23 seconds left in the third to grab a 7-6 decision. It was Eierman’s only lead of the match.

“There were some compromising positions,” said Brands. “Some of them we came out of and some of them we didn’t. We have to come out of those positions, and better yet, you stay on them and control everything and make it go your way.”

NC State pulled within 10-9 following a decision at 149 and a fall at 157. Alex Marinelli then righted the Hawkeyes ship with a 7-2 decision at 165. Marinelli erased a 2-0 first-period deficit by rattling off seven straight points, including a pair of escapes, one takedown, two stall calls and nearly three minutes of riding time.

The Wolfpack answered with decisions at 174 and 184 to grab their first lead of the dual, 15-13, with two matches to go.

Tied at one in the final minute at 197, Jacob Warner scored a deciding takedown in a 3-2 win, giving Iowa a 16-15 lead heading into heavyweight.

“I was happy to get the win,” Warner said. “I just believe in myself. It’s easy to let yourself down, it’s hard to let the team down. In those situations, I’m not really doing it for myself. I’m doing it for my team and that makes it a lot easier.”

The deciding match leaned in favor of Hawkeye heavyweight Tony Cassioppi, who scored a takedown in the closing seconds of the first and added a second takedown in the final minute of the third, clinching the dual with a 6-2 win.

“Our guys responded well and Warner and Cassioppi, because of the weight class order, there was drama,” Brands said. “They dug us out and we have some patient guys that are wrestling well. Maybe not the results they want, but they’re striving for them. The thing is, keep striving. You’re not going to get calls in this sport. You’re going to have to earn them. You’re not going to be given calls. You have to earn the calls. You have to earn the points. You have to earn everything on the mat.”

AD has looked great so far, but I get where you are going with this.

Riddler is the least of my worries. He has finished what 4,3,2 at nationals. Thats who he is... But i agree looks rusty at his own game. Could just be an off weekend.

What's not talked about in this forum is the Bull doesnt look as hungry and bonus points seem harder for him then then past years vs guys he should toy with. And guess his finish at nationals his first 3 years....

I feel great about both but I'd bet the house on JE over AMs points at nationals between those two if you want. One knows how to ride and finish off a QTR /semi type close one. One can flat out just pin guys without catching them. . Bull too easily takes the 1-1 bait deep into the 3rd.

Careful if you say Xanax 3 times Jammenz appears.
