Don’t overreact. The other contenders haven’t wrestled that well either.Lack of bonus in this round has become the new normal for Iowa wrestling.
Unless Iowa puts four guys into the semis...I see no way in hell they finish 2/3.

He got a major.Only major surprise from the first round was no bonus @ 165. Lets be honest, we all expected him to bonus his way to the semis at least.
Still have 6 guys on the front side. Not expecting much from either Cruz or an injuried Teemer on the backside.

True...not sure what I was thinking. It just wasn't as dominant as we have been accustomed to.He got a major.
It’s been super competitive. Lots of upsets/closer matches than expected. One of the better first rounds in a while.Seems like quite a few upsets with lower seeds winning.
More than normal?
Damn it...my math sucks today!7 guys?
Yes, that should have been an early stoppage. And he barely got the major. It was not a typical Caliendo performance.True...not sure what I was thinking. It just wasn't as dominant as we have been accustomed to.
I was doing math in my head trying to figure out where I missed a loss.Damn it...my math sucks today!
I guess that there's just too many of us that have watched Iowa wrestling for >20-25 years with higher expectations.Solid first round for the Hawks... too many are just too unrealistic
Seems to me he sometimes wears himself out when he has to chase bonus. I think he is much better at it when it comes organically just wrestling his match…Yes, that should have been an early stoppage. And he barely got the major. It was not a typical Caliendo performance.
Nope…Do they roll right into round 2?
tough day for 15 seeds, not much of an upset though I suppose. I think 4 10 seeds lost though?Seems like quite a few upsets with lower seeds winning.
More than normal?
But they can show competitive pie throwing on the Ocho with no problemsIf ESPN is only gonna show up once a year for wrestling they could at least have everything working correctly.
Kennedy actually is sitting in a pretty good spot. I don’t mind his path on the backside if he wins or loses next match. If he loses Braunagel would likely R16, but that is winnable. If he wins but loses in the quarters I really like his quadrant for R12.I guess that there's just too many of us that have watched Iowa wrestling for >20-25 years with higher expectations.
But given the fact that there hasn't been any new blood in the room for coaches in a long time, things can get stale.
Now if both Kennedy and Arnold win tonite, I'll change my opinion.
Neither did much this afternoon to think both win.
Karchla and Pinto are on the top side of the 174 consis. PK won't see either before medal rounds assuming they all make it there. The Karchla result shocked me honestly. You don't want to meet him in the consis imo.Kennedy actually is sitting in a pretty good spot. I don’t mind his path on the backside if he wins or loses next match. I am knocking on wood, but it looks like the draw monster finally had enough bearing on him the last two years…
2 weeks ago they’d be favored in 8/9 of these. Good opportunity to have a big round.Tonight's match ups if I am not mistaken:
Cruz vs. McCrone (Ohio St)
Ayala vs. Farber (UNI)
Parco vs. Stiles (Oregon St)
Teemer vs. Castillo (Chattanooga)
Caliendo vs. Thomsen (UNI)
Kennedy vs. Cassella (Bing.)
Arnold vs. Foca (Cornell)
Buchanan vs. Novak (Wyoming)
Kueter vs. Feldman (Ohio St.)
Two UNI match ups (Wish we would see them in regular season)
8 out of 9 is a realistic expectation I think. 7 out of 9 I'm hoping is worst case scenario. Iowa puts 7 in the quarters and I'm very happy with day 1.2 weeks ago they’d be favored in 8/9 of these. Good opportunity to have a big round.

Yes, we should probably just resign ourselves to being a 2-5 level program then... Soon to be 3-5 after DT steamrolls by us.Solid first round for the Hawks... too many are just too unrealistic

We're clearly not there yet, but hopefully we'll keep making strides. Going to be a long offseason if we don't get at least one on top.Tidbits of interest:
@125, only 2 bonus-point wins.
@ 133, #1, #3, & #6 won 1-pt matches. #5 won 8-6. Ayala, Bouzakis & Davis were the only guys with bonus-point wins.
@ 142, #2 Barlett (PSU) won 4-2. #4 Navy won in SV.
@149, #2 Lovett (Neb) won 10-8.
@ 165, 9 bonus-point wins, the most of any weight class.
@ 197, the top 6 advanced, but #7, #8, #9, #10 & #14 all lost.
Penn St scored bonus points in 9 of 10 matches, going 10-0.
Iowa scored bonus points in 3 of 9 matches, going 7-2.

We will see how the DT experiment rolls on. Lots of assumptions are being made that he will be an automatic success. There is just as much chance he determines the grind of coaching isn't for him.Yes, we should probably just resign ourselves to being a 2-5 level program then... Stop having unrealistic expectations for our guys...
Zero reason to believe this.We will see how the DT experiment rolls on. Lots of assumptions are being made that he will be an automatic success. There is just as much chance he determines the grind of coaching isn't for him.
About a million reasons to not believe it.Zero reason to believe this.
And his recruiting looks top notch thus far.Zero reason to believe this.
The grind of being a world class athlete for 25 years is a pretty big grind. This is probably a nothing burger compared to that.Zero reason to believe this.
