It appears we already have a pushout for one point. It's just called something else. Stalling.
I wonder why they don't call the guy pushing someone to the edge and won't let them back in for stalling.
Is he really wrestling or just trying to get the one-point pushout because it is easier and safer than going for a takedown and getting countered?
Sure seemed to me a lot of pushing across the mat to the edge to get a stalling call in a whole lot of matches this past week.

For the record, I have never advocated for the firing of TB. I simply want him to make some needed big adjustments. I have multiple times suggested that maybe he should go after Dake as an upper-weight coach/technician. Until Buchannan won it (he is a hired gun), Iowa hadn't had an upper-weight champion since Jay Borschell.
It just seems way move prevalent these days. Needs to be addressed. Pushing someone across the mat and out of bounds isn't wrestling.
It is as much a problem as backing off the mat.
I think they both should be called equally. Both are stalling.
I tend to agree. I think stalling gets called very subjectively and with no consistency. How do we actually fix that part of the problem?
I haven’t liked Carter since he was dancing at the end of the championship match in 2021. Show Kem some respect.
Yeah but he was a freshmen. I am more referencing established top end returning champs.
Best example was RBY. They’ve even had several very injured top guys finish the deal, star and Nolf
I think controlling the mat or failing to do so is an aspect of wrestling. They should just add a push out
I understand the pushout argument. But as Kwood mentioned. If you are just driving someone out of bounds that isn't engaging in wrestling. So it isn't a perfect solution either.
If Byrd is driving Ayala backwards, to the circle and Ayala spins and throws Byd out, then does Ayala get the pushout point? What kind of wrestling is that?
Well said. Agree. Just listened to bash/smalls cast. Not that they are all knowing but said similar. Bird pushed pace. DA uncharacteristically wasn't aggressive. Stall calls were warranted. However i totally get being cautiousness. Alot on line and certainly dont wsnt to make the 1 mistake to cause a loss. These kids at top level are so close the mistake will most times lose it for them. Lots of pressure and most ncaa finals are that way. One reason i love watching jesse mendez, austin gomez and most times lovett. For hawks mikey, and way back machine TT and ironside. My god no matter what they are throwing everything with amazing D too.
Can we end with as random as stallings called now days we all correct! 👊
It sucks for Drake and I think b/c he is from Iowa he is such a fan favorite everyone is more sensitive. We all wanted him to win so freaking badly
I would argue they wanted everyone to arrive early and be in their seats on time since there was an official schedule from the White House. Best way to make sure everyone gets in and to their seats is to see the main event

But I have been. Oh, the irony on the fifith championship last night. One main reason Starocci won his first was because with impunity he kept leaving the circle against Kemerer, the very thing DA endeavored not to do, but lost because of it.

Fair. It’s clear to me there are flaws in all styles of wrestling. I personally enjoy free style more. Largely based on less stalling and the absence of defensive top riding.
But free style has flaws, the gillman types who push out as their primary offense is kinda lame. I will say it doesn’t really work versus the best but still, the point remains.
I’d love a push out rule where it only applies if you push out based on a leg attack. So if you get a guys leg and push him out that warrants a point but driving a guy out sumo style does not. Basically award offensive attacks.
Absolutely! I take drake next yr all the way. Ayala with lee all yr and bird stuck in champagne! Ill take drake by several every time next yr!
He wrestles most tight matches this way. Drake is the Iowa version of Bartlett. Kid has tremendous talent but against good competition becomes a defensive wrestler. Wrestling not to lose instead of wrestling to win. The slide by is a counter to an aggressive forward pushing wrestler but not a great primary attack. Works really well when you have a lead and the other guy has to come get one.
We all know that many of the types of calls officials have to make have a gray area but arguably stalling has the largest gray area.
I realize that freestyle has the push out rule but to me pushing someone out when they are trying to stay somewhere near the middle of the mat is not stalling. Pushing someone out to me is not what college wrestling should be about. I just watched the 133 pound match once but never thought Drake was backing out.
He'll be a guest on Fox & Friends this morning. I plan on watching just to hear what he has to say.
And this isn't at you, but circling back that Trump attending is causing buzz for wrestling. I have to assume Hendrickson interviews and appearances will be making the rounds soon too.
If that is the case then Iowa still has a great image to some and is a very attractive place to wrestle. and recruiting is going to be a problem for a long time.
There are not that many coaches and programs that can do what Cael, TnT and David Taylor can do with athletes. It is foolish to not give them credit. Did they work a miracle with Hamiti? No. But just like with Buchanon, it is the little things that make a difference and not many know what those little things are and can have the consistency and focus to make sure they are executed.
You might even have to begrudgingly put Manning (because of his staff - Tervel is a wizard from what others say about him) in the group of people who can take a guy to t he highest level. After all, Bourroughs never left him. Let's remember also, that Nebraska and PSU did it almost entirely without the portal this time. I think Kerk is the only portal guy on PSU and Caleb Smith is the only one for Nebby.
That in itself is impressive.
DT and crew have to get credit for both Hamiti and Hendrickson. Prior to their wins Saturday - they never had wins as big as what they had.
Hell, Hamiti just lost to an injured KOT 2 weeks ago. That certainly counts as improvement. And while Hendrickson did beat a lesser version of Kerk - he decided to follow that up with one of the greatest upsets in college sports history.
Tervel is 100% the difference, and it just took a little longer than I thought it would. Nebraska always faltered at the end of the year.
Transfers? Nebraska had none and Carl had 2 in the lineup (Kerk and MM). DT's 2 champs were COVID seniors, showing that 1 year rentals can work.
Buchanan was lights out all year. Looked better in every position - and he was NOT that good on top prior to this year.
There's just a lot of good wrestling out there. It seems we're all fine with finish top 4 for the next however long, I guess. That seems sad. Schwabby presents the same problems as Brands when it comes to health and end of year performance, so no thanks on that hire. Some combination of a Snyder, Nolf, Zain, Kem, Spencer needs to be the next push, and I hope it happens soon.

Say what you want but Mitchell Messenbrink was a transfer portal acquisition. And barring injury, Aaron Ngao would have been a starter as well.

Nagao may have been a starter if not injured, but the guy scoring points at the NCAA tourney was not a transfer.
Without the portal, OSU and Iowa are not top 5 programs this year. Not that it matters, because the portal is here and it looks like it is here for awhile.
Yeah if we are counting Kerk, we definitely have to count Messenbrink. MM actually wrestled for his first school before deciding to transfer.
I wonder how his weight is. He needs some more muscle. He got out muscled. Can he add a few pounds and still be 133? Maybe about 8 pounds and be 141?
Iowa has absolutely benefited from the portal. I think they and Oklahoma State are the 3rd and 4th big Time programs to use it.
Michigan was second.
Cael was first to recognize and use the portal to its potential.
It’s understandable saying they wouldn’t be top 5 without transfers but a little unfair. They are using current rules to make their teams the best possible. If it didn’t exist they would be going after different high school targets more aggressively. Add without the gambling fiasco last year looks totally different also
So many were questioning his move to 133 thinking he was too small. 2x finalist. Wasn’t out of either match. He seems to fit fine at this weight.
Oh yeah. Looking good. He was out muscled in the finals. I was just wondering if he has room to put on a few pounds.
Nice win. It was nice to see Buch beat AJF as well. A little payback doesn’t hurt
Fair question but if anything the eye test looks like he could fill out at 133. I’m sure he could add size and go 141 but doesn’t look like it’s needed.
