NCAAW-- other games

So seriously how in the hell are they growing the women’s game if #9 tOSU & #25 Michigan isn’t even on a regular channel, WTH?! For those that don’t know Michigan has fantastic freshmen, one of which, Syla Swords is the closest thing to CC currently in college. tOSU also has a terrific Frosh in Jalen Cambridge.

In the Big12, #12 K-st vs #22 Utah also isn’t on a regular channel.

Four significant games tonight:

#9 OSU vs. #25 Michigan
#4 USC vs. #8 Maryland
#20 MSU vs. Nebraska (11-4)
#12 KSU vs. #22 Utah (12-2)

Maybe Michigan fairs better against the midwest foe. And we get to see what the jump from Maryland to USC really is.

Is what it is. It is really surprising to see top 10 teams play to a few thousand people in the arenas. Iowa is really fortunate to have a significant fanbase for the women's team.

Maryland currently 1 for 8 from 3 against USC. Couldn’t miss against Iowa.

Yeah weird deal, 31.6% & 22.2% from 3 and only down 1 @ half. And This JuJu/CC comparison is truly stupid. They aren’t even remotely the same kind of players. Juju isn’t even faster, but she’s strong, fluid & a downhill player who can shoot. Not a dynamic creator, not a deep shooter & sometimes spotty from 3. She is extremely hard to handle going to the basket & she is super long.

But she’s also 4-13, 1-5 with 6Rbs, 1 AST & 4 TOs…

I think Iowa is much closer to these teams than many may think. They have to stop being their own worst enemy.

Iowa has been pretty competitive, As I have said before when I watch the Hawks I feel like they still haven’t played as well as I think they are capable, It may not happen but I am hoping they can get the pieces to truly mesh as the season progresses.

Totally agree & quite frankly if they eliminated the slow starts on D and the ridiculous post entry passes we maybe undefeated.

Maryland uncharacteristically shot 45% from three vs us, but only 34% from two… Last I checked their shooting 37% in this game. The difference 20% from three.

I’m not trashing JuJu she has a great spirit and she’s a hell of a player. But I have now seen her play multiple times and if you get up in her face and get physical with her, she will turn the ball over a lot. And she won’t shoot well.

If you guys are watching this game or if any of you are, I should say the hope that we quit missing layups is just that. A hope….We don’t miss anymore than the rest of these top-tier teams. I’ve seen JuJu miss a couple. I just saw one of their interior post players missed two in a row.

Maryland had them until closing time. Took some pretty bad shots in the last two minutes.

Overall, watching that game made me feel better about the loss to Maryland, and more positive about the Hawkeyes upside. I'm expecting Iowa to come out fast and scrappy tomorrow. We'll see.

Michigan was all over OSU until the final four minutes of that game. I thought Michigan was going to win it until they sputtered.

KSU smoked Utah.

Nebraska wins the second tier BT game over MSU. No easy ones in that logjam behind the top of the conference.

USC held Terps to 2/14 from three and destroyed them on the boards

They missed a bunch of wide open looks at three, that they didn’t miss the other night. It was literally the difference in the game. We out rebounded them by four and I think USC out rebounded them by seven.

Hell, USC even had 19 turnovers.

I’m pissed about the super dumb ass passes and again it appears to be everybody. But I’m not really sure why people thought we were gonna go undefeated up until now, but that is certainly how they act during the games.

A sad side effect of the pass issue is now they are also becoming indecisive, which is a double killer. I certainly thought we'd have a solid starting five by now, or at least know what we are doing as rotations. Sounds like Jensen wants that fluid game to game going forward.

I think people know the team has talent, so it's frustrating when they make mistakes or play in an uncharacteristic way for the program. Poor passing was never something I imagined going into the year. Hopefully they start steering the offense in a different direction.

I think Jan thought the upperclassmen would be a fairly stable group (I know I did) but instead they have been consistently inconsistent.

I'm not confident the Hawks will win more than 1/2 road games in conference.

Objectively, I think 19-11 is possible.

Agree, playing 3 of the 4 best teams (MD, USC & UCLA) at home, while also playing the 4 worst teams (NW, PU, RU & WI) at home, means the road will be a bear. Under .500 on the conference road is very possible.

Tonight during Orange Bowl playoff football:

#6 LSU vs. #16 Tennessee
They can't both lose. Unfortunate. Gonna watch a little of this anyway before Iowa and Illinois tip.

#14 Duke vs. #19 UNC
#18 Alabama vs. #5 Texas

Oregon taking care of PSU 54-43 nearing the 4th.

Kim Mulkey is a clown. Seems she is cosplaying herself this year. LSU killing Tennessee on their press break.

Didn't watch that score, but looks like Maryland ended up winning by 15.
Oklahoma St. beating #17 WV is a bit of a surprise. 64-57
UConn having a tussle shedding Georgetown atm. No Bueckers.

*************

I was too busy wringing hands about the Hawkeyes to notice the scores from the other night, but some surprises with games I didn't think would be very close. From Thursday:

#6 LSU ended up winning over #16 Tennessee 89-87. Looks like TN came back and tied it with about 5 minutes to go and LSU hit the deciding bucket in the last seconds. Close one, but LSU now 18-0.

VT (11-4) beat #13 Georgia Tech(15-1) 105-94

#19 UNC ended up winning that low scoring affair over #14 Duke 53-46. That's an OT score. It was 8-6 after a quarter, and just 16-16 at the half! UNC went on to lead by 16 before Duke came back to tie it at 38 with 3:30 left in regulation. 40-40 led to overtime. Top 20 teams. Duke finished 16-68 (4-17 from three, and 10-18 at the line, 21 TOs).
UNC won shooting 17-53 (2-8 from three, and 17-25 at the line, 26 TOs).
!!! geesh

MSST (14-3) took down #10 Oklahoma (13-3) 81-77
#24 California 15-2) beat #21 NCST (11-4)
#5 Texas destroyed #18 Alabama (15-2) 84-40

#5 Texas down by 20 to #2 SC in the 4th.

#14 Duke trailed entire game before finally getting win (60-55) in the closing minutes over Virginia (10-7).

OSU up on Oregon by 17 starting the 4th.

Washington (12-4) vs #20 MSU (12-3)
Tied in 2nd quarter.

Notable games tonight:

#17 GT vs. #3 ND
GT on a two game skid bringing them to 15-2, but they have beat some good teams, so could be a game.

MSST (15-3) vs. #15 Tennessee (14-2)
MSSt three losses to SC, Kentucky, GT. I'd guess this goes to the wire

#18 Cal (16-2) vs. #16 Duke (13-4)

Indiana (12-4) vs. Illinois (12-4)
Curious to see if Garzon stays hot from 3, but things typically go, watch her go 1-7.
