Notre Dame released its federal tax return Monday, and once again, the school paid former coach Charlie Weis more than current coach Brian Kelly.

The university gave Weis a payment of $2,054,744 for the reporting period of July 2014 through June 2015. Weis has received $16,912,123 since he was fired in November 2009. Notre Dame is scheduled for "additional annual payments" through December 2015, so one more payment means Weis' buyout money from the school will total $18,966,867.

Kelly received $1,624,730 for the 2014 reporting period, though that likely does not match his total earnings, as the school notes that "the current head football coach is permitted to receive compensation from external sources with prior written approval from the University." Income from a source such as a shoe company would not have to be reported on the tax forms. Kelly received $1,187,272 from Notre Dame in the previous reporting period.

Although it has come to be expected that Weis earns millions for not coaching, there was one interesting revelation on the tax form: Defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder received $1,106,156 in his first year with the program. By comparison, former coordinator Bob Diaco, now the head coach at UConn, received $672,824 from the school in his final full reporting period from July 2012 through June 2013.

Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick made $1,605,070 over the reporting period, while men's basketball coach Mike Brey received $2,120,177, a sum that comprises $970,177 from the school and $1,150,000 from Play by Play Sports, which is now known as Notre Dame Sports Properties.

Women's basketball coach Muffet McGraw received $1,677,396, with $1,377,396 coming from the school and $300,000 coming from Play by Play Sports.

Professional agents vs athletic directors

AD's get fired if they hire the wrong guy. Motivation is to do anything to get him and assume your jobs on the line either way

Poor budgeting habits that don't consider opportunity costs

There are hundreds of other causes.... Mostly though it's just under qualified people making these decisions

I would Suck as a coach just like Weis .... maybe I should try it - cause I ain't getting paid that much right now.

Problem is - I might not have the "schematic" advantage. What an ego that guy has. It's actually larger than his gut.

Talk about a coach who made a fortune from being one of Belicheck's assistance with one good year at ND. I bet Kansas has a few regrets for taking Weis over Mike Leach.

They chose Turner Gill over Jim Harbaugh...Harbaugh was begging then AD-Lew Perkins, for the job. Perkins told him he would need to take the job immediately..Harbaugh wanted to coach his Stanford team in their bowl game. They both stood their ground and KU hired Gill...Current NC State HC-Dave Doeren, also wanted the KU job at that time..

.Harbaugh went on WHB 810 sports radio in KC,and went in depth about how badly he wanted the Kansas job at that time...

I find this extremely hard to believe.

Stupid my butt.

I live in Indy and was golfing at my home course the day that happened. How that kid was allowed up there is beyond me as that was the most obnoxious wind I've ever golfed in and we are 2.5-3 hours sw of SB.

I've always wondered how Kelly kept his job.

The equipment manager at ND was required to sew 3XL tags in Charlie's pants. (True story) Only in his dreams and his altered pants was he a 3XL.

Think Kansas paid him close to 6 mill since his firing from there, as well..

This is what is wrong with America. KS governor Brownbeck cut 17 million from the states university systems this year. What if 6 million didn't have to go to fat Charlie.
