Next years roster, point to the hope

Honestly, how confident were you in Rebraca last off-season?

There's lots of reason for optimism that Perkins, Payton, the freshmen, etc will improve this offseason. We will see if there's any more departures and what additions we bring as well. It's 2023--rosters can change dramatically over night.

Pg still a concern for I don't know how many years, hope the portal will be used and who know's in this landscape who will leave.

Kris is a great player but in my opinion he was put in a spot that he isn't necessarily accustomed to. He needed someone to take the pressure off him and he would flourish. Which is perfectly fine. But too often the team just gave him the ball and watched.

Gotta hit the portal hard. I know Fran will pull it off. 😉
Fran's unwillingness to pay NIL to top portal players is exasperating.

Looking at returning players:

Ulis and Bowen - point guard should be decent. Not sure where Hardy fits.

Perkins - solid at the 2

Sanford × 2 should be solid at the three

Patrick and Dembele (sp?) at the four could be decent. Patrick needs to build more strength. Dembele could be a rebounding force inside.

Big hole at the post. I do not have much confidence in Mulvey or Ogundele. Freeman shows promise. Really need a portal player and Fran should pull out all the stops to get a quality big.

We didn't have a NIL collective last season. It's hopefully going to be different this off-season now that we have an established collective. Just look at what the Swarm did for football. We aren't signing guys to Nijel Pack level deals, but the collective will make Iowa competitive for most players.

A lot more than I do Mulvey or Big O

The sentiment that we only have had the NIL via the Swarm in place this year is accurate. We need to let Fran see what he can do with the 5, 1, and 4 spots (in priority order).

Priorities:
1. The need for a 5 spot player speaks for itself.
2. Does anybody really feel confident in Ulis, Bowen, or Harding at the 1 spot next year?
3. Freeman (who will be exceptional) and Ladij (another excellent recruit) will be too inexperienced.

Really hope Fran can make a splash in the portal with NIL in place. Rebraca was a GREAT pickup. Need an injection of talent and the portal is the answer.

Agreed Skydog. Just need everyone to remember that Iowa currently has 1 open scholarship (Kris') until we see some other departures. Unfortunately, I think the only way Fran brings on a pg via the portal is if Ulis or Bowen depart--he's not going to have 4 true PGs + Perkins on a roster. We will see what happens--I doubt Bowen leaves but could see Fran having a very tough conversation with Ulis in the end of year meeting.

The 4 is interesting. If Payton bulks up a bit more I actually think that fits his game well--he just really struggles to guard opposing guards. The 4 for him would maybe help some defensively. I like him at the 4 more than Patrick just due to Pat's unfortunate inability to bulk up. Due to this, I might say a 2nd big man might be more important than true 4. That said, if there is talent at the 4 in the portal they should absolutely pursue. They can just be a bit more picky about the type of guys they look at.

He has to or we are totally hosed next year. People think this recent fade is bad, watch out next year if we don't pick up at lest two quality players (which I think we will).

The game has changed - good, bad, or indifferent. It is, what it is...

Fran will pick up a very 5 and this team looks set up for a nice run next year. I think we Have 3 guys returning who will be All Big. The future is bright.

Good, logical assessment. I agree with your thoughts on Ulis especially. He's just kind of there, hanging around, kind of guy. Occasionally a decent game or two but that's not cutting it for a starting PG at an upper division, high-major D1 program in one of the most competitive conferences in the country.

The portal...
Maybe Kris returns...

Only hope I have.

As frustrating as Kris can be at times... (we just want him to take over more often and have that hard to the hoop agressiveness). Him and Rebecca are HUGE holes to fill.
F*** as passive as he's been this year, IF he came back next year and passed on that pro ball money, he's gonna make Roger Dorn from Major League look like f***ing Cal Ripkin...................dude is protecting his and it shows massively.

Don’t underestimate the value of a senior point guard.

That's also fair. There was a stretch where he was shooting about 45% from 3. I just think he disappears for long stretches and isn't enough of a shot creator for opposing defenses to really worry about.
I certainly won't be upset if he returns, I just think that Fran is going to need to make a decision on whether he wants to ride with Ulis & Bowen or kick the tires on a portal PG. He realistically can't have both--we cannot have almost a third of our scholarships tied up in PGs.

Its changed because you know everyone else in the BIG is going to get plug and play portal players. I don't understand why Maier left Baylor for Illinois other than for money.

I'm sure money played a factor. But Baylor also brought in a top 10 prospect at his position and it's not like he was a 30 minute/game player there beforehand. He only played about 20 minutes/game before they brought in the 5 star.

I don't think Patrick will ever see any significant weight gain with his body getting wracked by cancer and cancer treatment unfortunately. Dembele is the guy I'm most intrigued by of the newcomers because he isn't a typical Fran recruit body wise and is playing a position of need.

Perkins was a disappointment this year. Very inconsistent. Really needs to work on an outside shot.
He needs to just be more confident in his 3 point shot. He shot the exact same percentage as Kris this year, just way fewer attempts.

Brock Harding might just start from day 1. If Fran lets him play through a mistake or 2. He completely controlled both games I watched downstate in 4A championship in Illinois
