Next years roster, point to the hope

I don't think Patrick will ever see any significant weight gain with his body getting wracked by cancer and cancer treatment unfortunately. Dembele is the guy I'm most intrigued by of the newcomers because he isn't a typical Fran recruit body wise and is playing a position of need.
Patrick has quietly played very well the last few games. Had a very nice pass to Sandfort tonight.

Brock Harding might just start from day 1. If Fran lets him play through a mistake or 2. He completely controlled both games I watched downstate in 4A championship in Illinois
I’m hoping Bowen stays because I think he is a star. If not, I’d not be surprised to see Harding come in and start.

Ulis and Bowen - point guard should be decent. Not sure where Hardy fits.

Ulis and Bowen would need to improve tremendously, did you just see all the scoring from Auburns 3 guards and their bench. Ulis is not getting it in the hoop or making many assists.

I hope one of these two and maybe I root for Dix to really improve and take the pt guard position for 35 minutes a game.

I don't care about the roster.

It doesn't matter who's on the roster.

Fran = no defense and no defense = no tournament success

That's what we have to look forward to regardless of who is on the roster.

Iowa is just spinning the wheels until we get a new coach. At that point we'll either move forward or backwards.

Kris is a great player but in my opinion he was put in a spot that he isn't necessarily accustomed to. He needed someone to take the pressure off him and he would flourish. Which is perfectly fine. But too often the team just gave him the ball and watched.

If only Kris had a chance to play with a Superstar PF like say Keegan for a couple years, he might have
flourished at the "3".

Fran does seem to end up with better B1G record than prognosticators predict. I would guess
8-12 to 9-11 in B1G play. Is the B1G really a good basketball conference?

150th Adjusted Defense probably not going to cut it if you value you wins in NCAA tournament.

Obviously, a lot of fans are happy just getting there.

Hopefully Bowen stays and gets the keys to the car. A lot of potential. Ulis is a nice back up but really doesn’t do anything well.

Would be great if Bowen does stay, but we shall see if he enters portal. Fran seems to l like PGs that resemble Connor, Gessell, JBO as his prototypes. Hardin will probably be the starter next year. Hardin might have the complete offensive game that Gessell/JBO lacked, but will probably get abused on defense.

I do like Dix and he is atypical in that he can play some man defense...the Sandforts can shoot, about zero depth at PF/Center in terms of athletic guy that can defend, rebound, and hopefully has a post offense game. PMAC likely to start next year.

That's right, lets hope Fran go's to the portal and get someone to help us just like portal players helped Illinois. Getting someone from the portal is a double edged sword, as good as Rebraca worked to get where he was from last year it was still not what Iowa needed. He was still a forward that had very little middle range game to open up the lanes and was inconsistent from the line.
I'd much rather Fran get someone from the high school level then Fran give someone the keys to unlimited minutes and keep one of Frans recruits from getting playing time.

He has to or we are totally hosed next year. People think this recent fade is bad, watch out next year if we don't pick up at lest two quality players (which I think we will).

The game has changed - good, bad, or indifferent. It is, what it is...
Fran won’t aggressively pursue a transfer because it takes away from PM playing time.

I think Bowen can/will take a big step forward next year. I am optimistic for him being quick enough to drive and kick to Sandfort and Dix spotting up.

Predictions:

Payton has a jump nearly as fast as Luka's soph/jr improvement. Payton scored with a short lefty jumper, a twisting drive, a great cut dunk, 2 3s and 2 FTs. Payton will have much heavier minutes and a lot more offense coming through him. Very smart, heady player that knows where the ball is and has as good defensive instincts as anyone else on the roster, including the spacing. Do not foresee another 0-19 streak from 3. He will get stronger and harder to contain without fouling...and he hits almost 90% of those. Not afraid to be the go to player.

TP will also make a huge leap. Tony got better throughout the season, maybe not straight line but a very up trend. Like Payton, Tony has displayed a pretty wide array of skills. Just needs more consistency. I think that consistency will appear. Dix will provide quality depth here.

Questions:

P Mac. Will he play? Will his heart and head be in it to win it, so to speak? If so that is a third experienced quality starter. If not, do we start the Sandfort bros?

PG. What becomes of Ahron, Dasonte and Harding. Ahron's lack of confidence and scoring ability needs that senior year urgency. He's athletic, fast, gets inside regularly but then usually freezes up. He looks surprised when he drops a jumper from anywhere. Bowen looks the part but if we're honest he was usually way out of control this year. Dasonte needs to call something other than the old No. 1 play. Harding is, like all incoming freshmen, unknown but for film. But his film is very impressive from a ball handling, floor vision and a notorious ability to go both ways. That group, either collectively or with a player jumping the pack, has to provide the equivalent of one good point guard.

The Center is probably not on the roster. Small chance of Riley and maybe Josh emerging, and either or both would be great, just not likely. There are two good big freshmen coming in and absent a portal guy ready to be a good player those freshmen will probably push Josh and Riley aside pretty early in the season. Freeman has pulled a basket support out of a wall and bent a rim with dunks, and he's the skinnier freshman big guy. If we land a Filip or better guy from the portal of course that guy will start. Riley and Josh are the most likely transfers, they have to see PT is going to be hard to find.

A trip back to the Sweet 16 becomes more likely every year-sun's gotta shine on our ass someday. F Mac isn't a very good big game coach, always seem to come out cold and flat in these March games, but he also always puts a bunch of scorers on the floor and someday in March they will all get hot together.

1. We need more quickness
2. Need more depth
3. Point Guard play has to be much better - must break down defense + not be a turnover machine
4. We have to grab 1+ players in the portal

Starters:
Pe. Sandfort
D. Bowen
Dembele
Freeman
TBD-Portal 2G

Key Bench Guys:
T. Perkins
J. Dix
P Mac
Pr. Sandfort
Harding

Spot Minutes:
Nimmers
Ogundele

Transfer out: Ulis, Mulvey

That roster hardly inspires confidence.

PMac has 2 more years of elegibility. Correct? So we are stuck with him sucking up minutes. PMac has not improved at all from last year. Actually regressed. If Fran would just use him as he should be getting spot minutes to give someone a blow.

I don't think the young man wants to play basketball. I would not be surprised if he retires. He isn't his dad, he isn't Connor.

He needs to just be more confident in his 3 point shot. He shot the exact same percentage as Kris this year, just way fewer attempts.
That speaks more to Kris than to Perkins.

Kris shooting 33% on 7 attempts a game hurt us. That's not great efficiency.

The three game losing streak to end the season? Kris went a jarring 8-32 from deep. Thats 25% on ALOT of attempts. If Kris shoots 35% those games, we win the games.

I’ll point to hope…other teams that recruit b-ball players instead of recruiting players from the sales counter at the J Crew store at the mall!!!!!!! We’re looking at 15+ losses next season unless we get some MAJOR victories in the portal.

This just shows you how clueless you are, stick with football.
Tony Perkins is not going to stick around as a 2nd teamer. He's going to one of the starters. Payton Sandfort is going to be a starter. The point guard position will be determined by the end of the summer European trip, either Ulis, Desonte, or Brock. The 2 forward positions will be probably Dembele or PMac and the center will be either Mulvey or Freeman.
Ogundele had his chance and other then getting his diploma, keeping him on the roster is up to Fran but he will never be a high volume player and will struggle with his weight and lack of energy.
Although I listed Patrick as a starter I'm just not sure he as the stamina to compete for long periods of playing time and there's still a chance that he might call it quits, and forgo his last year. We shall see.
Nimmers has skills that Iowa needs and should get plenty of playing time next year and might be awarded the 13th scholarship, and Pryce Sandfort, with his shooting ability will find time on the court.
Everyone else is either not on the roster or are walk-on's.
One thing that is a curtain, Iowa will lose 10 or more games and if they happen to get a spot in the NCAA tournament, and playing 4 freshmen extended minutes won't be a given, but if they do win enough games Iowa won't make the round of 16.
After 13 years you can't get any more curtain that that...

I don't care if I ever see Dix play point guard again. He is a knock-down 3-point shooter and should be playing the wing position. Bowen or Harding need to step up to be the starter at PG.

Do incoming freshmen (or transfers enrolling in the fall) get to go on the Euro trip?

Need a Center. Front court depth will be a problem - just give the two freshmen a bunch of minutes.

PG - Ulis, Bowen
SG - Perkins, Dix
SF - Sandfort, Sandfort
PF - McCaffrey, Dembele
C - Transfer, Freeman

Nope Ulis will start
He honestly might, but I have no idea why. Candidly I don’t know what he does really well. He would come in as a defensive sub during late game situations for Sandfort - yet Ulis averaged 0.5 steals per game! If he’s our “defensive stopper” that’s about all we need to know regarding our level of defensive focus. Auburns guards harassed every pass and ball handler. Ulis does not fit that bill. Nor does he score, shoot well, penetrate and kick, or rebound.

People ragged on Conner, but Conner averaged 1.3 steals per game (yes more minute), but also actually facilitated the offense, played defense 1 through 5 when we needed, rebounded, was a great FT shooter, and provided some semblance of toughness that precious few other hawks have (Rebraca and Sandfort).

Point being, I can at least point to some positives for most players on the team - and while this is harsh, I struggle to do so with Ulis. Great teammate, and solid backup, but we need a different option for starting PG. I’d like to see Bowen get that shot.

I’ve seen Harding play 5 times. He was super in 2 games, very good in 2, and very average in 1. He had a great championship game. However, their opponent (Benet) was missing their point guard. He may have given Harding a little harder time. Harding is listed at 6’0. That might be stretching it a bit. He has tremendous vision and very good court sense, as you would want in your point guard. He’s highly competitive. I’m still on the fence how he will fair in the Big 10 (due to his size). I would say if he is the starting point guard next year, it will be a long year. It’s pretty difficult for a freshman to come in and run the point. There will be some growing pains. I hope he does well.

Really hope Fran can make a splash in the portal with NIL in place. Rebraca was a GREAT pickup. Need an injection of talent and the portal is the answer.
Gentleman,
doing the same thing over and over again, (terrible defense) and expecting different results is the defintion of insanity.

fran could be give Luka Garza, and he’d still not be able to get a tournament win becuse they don’t play defense.the talking heads were shaking their head at how bad IOWA is at D.

clue, it’s not the players…
