NIL/ Transfer portal = SALARY CAP ???

How much does money persuade these recruits? If they grew up a hawk fan but psu was gonna get them paid are they really turning to psu then? I really have no idea I just couldn’t imagine turning iowa down if tnt came calling regardless of money.

I’ve heard that’s what Suriano received
I heard the same in Detroit but it was around 180k.
Like it or not its here to stay. I think for wrestling the major big splash NIL money will go to transfers with proven track records. Recruits will get their fair share but could you imagine if Ferrari were to hit the market. He might have a live auction on his social media and it would literally cost a Ferrari to get him.

And a chauffeur to keep him.

In the case of IRA and other large donors, they are getting tax write offs as charitable contributions.
Not presently.

The Jobs Tax Act has a provision that excludes donations to school athletics from being eligible for the federal charitable deduction.

I had been able to itemize only 85% of my contributions to school athletic fund, because 15% was deemed the value of a return benefit. Now I can deduct no amount.

The affluent retirees now use qualifying charitable distributions from their pretax 401ks to reduce their taxes.

I know almost first hand that it was north of $150k when the bidding was all said and done.

Is a wrestling club the same as school athletic fund? Or are the both 501 (c) (3)?

But we aren't really talking about recruits who are life long iowa wrestling fans. We are talking about kids that have no allegiance or fandom to any particular school.

He means Karl.
I've had several conversations with Karl over the years and have never thought he was the sharpest pencil in the drawer. I remember being in Ames years ago at Ames Outdoor Gear, now called Jaxs. Probably chatted for 10 minutes or so and walked away thinking "holy crap that dude is dumber than a box of rocks". Now I'm going to guess he's not dumber than a box of rocks, but any conversations since then have not led me to believe he's real sharp either. Casey is the guy who fine tunes their already high level wrestlers and Karl's brother is the weasel who manipulates the system. In my opinion, Karl's undefeated college career and Olympic gold are his assets in the recruiting world, not his level of coaching and people skills.

Good question. They would have to try and legislate an individual or program limit as to how much money can be earned per year by scholarship athletes.
And you don’t think illicit players would just go ahead and do what they have been doing for decades.

Absolutely amazing statement. You would like me to believe the man who has been head coach of a team that has won 9 ncaa in the 11 years he has been coach is just along for the ride.
How in the name of the Almighty do you possibly have any idea what goes on in the training room, pre tournament prep etc..
I guess you and those like you are like those Russians who believe no civilians have been killed in Ukraine..

Well, he did put that team together. So he’s apparently smart enough to be a successful head coach who knows his weaknesses and delegates.well.

Did he put the team together?? Or did his support staff put it together? Don't get me wrong, Karl was a stud wrestler and I'm sure still is yet today. His credentials are what has drawn the athletes and those around him put the team together. I think they say "Karl stay out of way, just sit there with that shiny dome and grin and let us do the talking".

Have you ever had a conversation with the guy??
I never mentioned anything about training room or pre-tournament prep. I do believe he is more valuable as a hands on training partner then the guy who puts together a practice plan & runs practice (that's Casey).
Don't ever compare me to a Russian again....

So, someone might have a three piece and a coke on order? Do you deliver to local bridges?

Ira Lubert has been in the Pennsylvania News as of late for leading the group that has secured the licenses and developed the land to construct a Casino in the State College area. He intends to build it and has maintained that he will build the tax base for the local area and he will continue his donations and funding of many local University clubs and organizations....which translates to " Let me make Millions of dollars and Ill keep greasing the University whenever i can for the right reasons and a sweet tax write off."

I can assure you, Ira has no intention of building a casino. Old news.
And it’s not millions, it’s more like hundreds of millions.
Yes, he’s the man mostly responsible for Cael going to PSU. Iowa has many more people than any other program interested in donating to their wrestling program. PSU has less, but those who do donate, enjoy donating more. There’s nothing wrong with that.
Money has nothing to do with why Iowa can’t maintain Cael’s pace. It’s about Cael’s ability to recruit, develop, and coach good wrestlers.

We all have jobs(well I assume). If you love your job and someone offers you double what you make now to jump ship I think we all take the double salary. The NIL is a massive deal for these young kids. They want to capitalize on their success and I don’t blame anyone of them. Someone said if you love IOWA and TNT came calling they wouldn’t turn them down. I would pry turn them down if someone offered me significantly more $$ than to just wrestle for Iowa. Iowa has to find ways to get these dudes paid to bring them in. If you can’t outbid someone these athletes are going to treat transfer portal like free agency. Whoever gives the most going to get the athlete.

Being able to earn money outside their scholarships due to their name and image as nil was intended is not exactly the same as boosters flat out paying HS recruits to go to a school or payouts to swipe kids from other teams. Transfers need to miss a year again.

Bingo. Sit for a year if you transfer. Same as before. Needs to happen, or guys like Nicky Transfers will become the norm and that isn't ideal for college sports in any way.

Oh come on!?!?!? "Money has nothing to do with it???? It is just his ability to recruit!?!?!? I mean really???

The NIL has made it "pro" sports. I see no difference now. In Football for example, there is a lot of $$$$ that can be made. So if a super wealthy donor whats to pay top players and build a great program. Nothing is stopping him. "Hey 5 star QB kid. I will give you 8 Mil to go to X University. I get to use your Name and sell T-shirts. We have a deal?"

I think you’re grossly overestimating how much wrestlers are making off of NIL. There’s 1 wrestler making enough that we would considered it extra income. The majority don’t even make enough to cover books. Wrestlers don’t even compete with womens swimming and diving when it comes to NIL deals.
You’re right about the football kids… but that’s football. This is wrestling. Donors aren’t giving away free money. If they’re not getting a ROI, they’re not signing up for NIL deals.

This was my guess as well, but really had no clue. Is it correct that athletes have to report their NIL activities to the U compliance department, but that it is not publicly accessible info.....unless an athlete volunteers it?

Just about every activity an athlete does works it’s way through the compliance office. Schools mostly deny an NIL deal because of existing contracts with companies, but they can basically deny one for any reason at all.

I am not an attorney nor have I read the Supreme Court’s ruling on what the NCAA can or can’t do regarding NIL but one idea that was presented to me was to have athletes disclose any NIL money they are making and the NCAA setting a rule that any athlete over a given amount is considered ineligible to participate. Have no idea if possible or work but this is getting out of hand in under 1 year as we all expected it would.

You know the world is going to hell in a handbag when a salary cap is needed for "amatuer" College Athletes........

Your last two sentences are a damn lie. If you know of the first part of your post, you know the last is a lie

I am just going by numbers that I have read. Are these numbers real? I have no idea, but suriano was reported to have received 150K, and RBY Jelly has said to be asking for 165K. Are people crazy enough to give this much money? Well the great Fale had the 660K camp expenses several years back??? not his $$$$ being thrown around so that makes it a lot easier!

Now if I was a super wealthy guy and had some extra cash to burn. Would it be worth it to throw some at the HAWKS? Possible get great seats at Carver, accesses to the coaches and wrestlers B1G and NCAA tickets etc.... I am guessing I would, and I would build a IOWA STYLE Wrestling club and have as many coaches and wrestlers come in to do clinics as possible.

matter of fact, how much do you think this would cost?
