******Northwestern at IOWA Game Thread******

Our defense fought, but both Sandforts are so weak on that end. Payton especially got abused. But Fran needs to have double teams come at those one on one situations. That"s how jNW held Freeman down in 2nd half.

yes it did seem like Barnhizer and Martinelli would both be vulnerable to someone from blind side going for a strip. Payton alone couldn't get a stop. I suppose that is why Fran is not much of a defensive coach.

Well the shot that Pryce was going to have to take probably wasn't going in. Dix shot maybe even less probable but I guess we are in golden age of Hawkeye luck with that win vs Nebraska and now this.
The fact is Fran froze. He could have called a TO with a few seconds left. That play was going nowhere. PS made the right call. Fran gagged in the moment…again

@Moral, this meme needs some of your photoshop magic done on it. Needs an x to replace the last two letters of that middle word .....

I only watched the last 10 minutes but he got at least one rebound.

It was an offensive rebound that should have been an easy put back but he never even looked at the basket and you could hear a loud grown from the crowd.

unfortunately Dimbele has a higher percentage shooting the open 3 ball then his turn around fading lane shot or a layup under the basket. Dimbele is a project as he didn't make the leap from Freshman to sophomore that one would hope. Traore needs nearly all Dimbele minutes when he gets healthy. Fran doesn't have a defensive stopper on the roster for bigger, physical guys like Barnhizer and Martinelli. Jost Dix was overmatched and Payton even worse.

If Fran does start Traore when he is ready, then Fran is a bigger dumbass than I thought.
He cannot be a bigger dumb*** than I thought for quite some time now. Tonight was luck with a great shot but never should have been in that position. Did McCaffery think that Barnhizer and Martinelli would not back down players? I watched two games of NW and those two do bully ball all the time. McCaffery had no answer, really.

Yeah, can we put that discussion behind us yet? Kid’s a gamer.
Potentially a gamer. He had 3 turnovers in 2nd half which helped NW get back into the game and then he's only about 50% on the season from FT line. You can't really have a PG shooting 50% from FT line. It is matter of focus and making FT shooting a priority---kid is a gamer, then he should make his FTs because that is what good players do.

Dix was fine. Payton is a terrible defender.

Traore is a good matchup for one of those two but the problem is that still leaves Sandfort to defend the other.

Dembele needs to see a hypnotist or something, he's so afraid to shoot the ball it's sad to watch.

It's wild that Fran has s whole team comprised of forwards and almost none of them can defend or rebound.

He also traveled twice on his and1 at the end. Couldn't believe the reffs missed it as it was a huge pivot drag.

Agree on the FT, he needs to fix that. I think he had cut down the turnovers until tonight. Still I think he had 8 assists, 12 points, a couple steals and a blocked shot to save a breakaway layup. He’s just a stat stuffer and brings energy to everything he does.

Seriously though, how many times does Iowa hit game-winners like that? I know @hawkirugged17 provided the X from Nicolas Baer of JBo hitting a very similar shot against NW from a few years back, but that is a rare celebration for the Hawkeyes - at least seems like it.

I know Iowa's been on the wrong end of that kind of shot a lot more than we want to think about, but not super often they themselves actually hit that.

I wish Fran would switch things up a bit quicker to see what’s working. Small ball, go big sometimes. Maybe Mulvey has figured some things out out after last game. I know it was a cupcake but he dunked like 3-4 times which is what a 6’11” or 7’0” guy should do.

Rebounding and missed FTs were huge factors in the loss to Utah St.

Same things almost cost them the game tonight vs NW.

Why rebounding continues to be such a problem is a mystery, when its beyond obvious that its a weak point every time out. Seems like such a basic thing to focus on in practice. Fix a fundamental of basketball, or at least work on it.

I only read the past dozen or so posts. Dembele seems to be the guy folks like to blame, but he played some good defense tonight. He has no idea what to do with the ball on offense, except shoot a spot up 3. Lousy coaching there.

If you want to knock someone tonight, the second half of basketball was the worst by Freeman, since early in his freshman season, on both ends.

Josh Dix is nails on both ends. Good game from Harding. We worried about PG before the season, but Harding/Thelwell has been a strength. Traore would have helped again Barnhiser and Martinelli. Josh is the only one who could slow them down.

Very fortunate to win. Got a lot of calls to get free throws. Make your F***ing free throws!
