******Northwestern at IOWA Game Thread******

unfortunately Dimbele has a higher percentage shooting the open 3 ball then his turn around fading lane shot or a layup under the basket. Dimbele is a project as he didn't make the leap from Freshman to sophomore that one would hope. Traore needs nearly all Dimbele minutes when he gets healthy. Fran doesn't have a defensive stopper on the roster for bigger, physical guys like Barnhizer and Martinelli. Jost Dix was overmatched and Payton even worse.
They could have scored ALL night on PS one on one.....

This probably makes me a horrible person, but I am so glad that Dix was the one to attempt that last shot instead of Sandfort.

Seems like every time Payton gets a truly real opportunity for "hero ball", its just another dent on the rim or a lost handle in the process of either catching it or going up for the shot. Or he forces a much tougher shot on himself than it should have been.

Moline boys have the most effort but can not make Free throws, Payton is not all B1G.

Oh well. Even if they pull out the win, this is not good enough basketball to do anything special.
I hope I never hear from someone about PS playing in the NBA again. Not a chance in hell. Besides his total lack of defensive ability he makes countless horrible passes....

Do they shoot free throws in Moline? Asking for a friend.....
Brock was a very good free throw shooter somewhere in the upper 70's, Owen was somewhere in the upper 60's. Brock will show better after the winter break, feel the whole team will shoot better at the line after the winter break.

Out rebounded 36-26. They had 11 offensive boards. Clearly a problem all year or any year with Fran.
If Fran believes that Bruans is the answer to fix the rebounding problem, it's not going to happen.
Leaving Mulvey on the bench when Owen is the only rebounder Iowa has is coaching malpractice. I have no say in who Fran puts out on the floor to give Owen a rest, but Riley deserved to see some action tonight after his game last Tuesday. Giving Even dues for hitting 50% of his free throws and getting stuffed at the rim twice and short stringing a layup is a joke and will be every game he see action.
This win didn't need to be that difficult, Fran dodged a Bullitt tonight, Saturday is another test. Go Hawks!

It has to be a coaches decision not to be a better free throw shooting team. Too much teaching on dribbling around the key and not enough time practicing a simple free throw. Really frustrating.

This is typically what happens when we need a last second shit from him…..

typically players practice FT's on their time. No excuse & not a coaching issue IMO. More mental than anything. Any D1 player should be capable of shooting 75% from the line. Crunch time is all mental. Mike Gessell may be one of the worst crunch time FT shooters in Hawkeye history. Frustrating.

I only read the past dozen or so posts. Dembele seems to be the guy folks like to blame, but he played some good defense tonight. He has no idea what to do with the ball on offense, except shoot a spot up 3. Lousy coaching there.

If you want to knock someone tonight, the second half of basketball was the worst by Freeman, since early in his freshman season, on both ends.

Josh Dix is nails on both ends. Good game from Harding. We worried about PG before the season, but Harding/Thelwell has been a strength. Traore would have helped again Barnhiser and Martinelli. Josh is the only one who could slow them down.

Very fortunate to win. Got a lot of calls to get free throws. Make your F***ing free throws!

I swear I'm one of the only one's to call out Freeman tonight. He did not have a good game in the 2nd half. I still believe he's a great player but just had a rough go. A lot of it had to do with NW on the offensive side. The defensive side had too many lapses.

Still young...

Rebounding and missed FTs were huge factors in the loss to Utah St.

Can't rebound when you're undersized if you don't box out and Fran doesn't believe in boxing out. I think he thinks it slows down the break or something.

Who knows, he's a weird dude.
Tom Davis always emphasized rebounding & making more FT's than opponents attempted.

He got double teamed every time he touched the paint. Fran should take note & players need to quit standing around & watching. Set off ball screens so Freeman has someone to pass to out of the double team. He didn't have an open passing lane & that's on the coaches not teaching players how to get an open look from these double teams & making the defense pay.

He (Ladji) had 1 rebound.... 1 stinking rebound. Freeman had a great 1st half and was double teamed all 2nd half. Fran hasn't coached the guys how to get open off the double team and create passing lanes for Freeman to dish it back out. Too much standing around watching Freeman and not enough off the ball screens and player movement to get open. Coach them up Fran.

Wish I had of stuck with watching that game.

Seemed like Wisconsin had that game in cruise control when I stopped watching around the 8ish minutes left mark in the 1st half.

Damn.

I thought we were cruising, too.

With 4:40 to go in the 1st half, Iowa led 36-19

Can't blame free throws on Fran. These are division 1 athletes. These guys aren't learning how to shoot at this level. They were obviously good players in high school if they are on a college roster.
It's all repetition and mental.

And to be fair, Brock only had ONE FT attempt (and he missed it).

For sure, Owen has to get better at the charity stripe (he was 1-4).

When you break the FT shooting down:

5-5 (100%) Payton & Dix
2-3 (67%) Pryce
4-11 (36%) Owen, Brock, Even, Drew
.................................................
11-19 (58%) TOTAL

It's crazy how Iowa scores so much because if you don't rebound the ball, you obviously don't possess it. And if you don't possess it, you can't score.

Kenyon Murray commented on here that Tom Davis held you accountable if you did not rebound (he sat your ass on the bench)

I'm amazed to say I actually agree with that. The kid at least gives energy. We get little but a few fouls from Brauns, and frankly I don;t see anything in Dembele's game at all...

What are you talking about? Bardo said he was a sure-fire second round pick. ;)
I know. I have my doubts though, and frankly most late second rounders don't make the league. If Utoff and especially Joe cool can't hang there's NO way PS can play in the league. Joe was a 45% three point shooter, money at the line, averaged 7 boards/gm as a wing, and a better defender then PS.

I read the NU rivals board and one poster mentioned Freeman is soft AF for his size.

Can't say I disagree with that too much 🤷‍♂️. Hunger was pushing him around a lot, either by using his legs or just a hand to the chest.

Often when OF gets double teamed he gets bent over - literally and figuratively 😅 - and struggles to even maintain possession. Ideally you'd want some more assits out of so many double-teams, but OF had only 2 assists ... and 3 rebounds.

Still a big fan and see more upside, but he's obviously gotta bow up a little bit more.

How many front end of a 1 and 1? I know Freeman had one down the stretch.
