Arrived at CHA early to watch the shoot around and gained a new appreciation for Ellingson's stroke. He is not at Jok-level, but the kid can really shoot it. I realize a pre-game shoot around is vastly different than a game, but he was ripping the nets and focused on catching and shooting in rhythm. His release looked quicker last night as well...maybe just my view.

Kriener: The more I see of this kid, the more I like him. Easy to say "he has a great stroke for a big guy" in these cases, but he has a great shot period. He was also hitting baseline jumpers and 3's consistently in the shoot around. I am glad he got a lot of PT last night, as we will need his bigger body and 5 fouls against teams like Purdue. He has great hands and when he gets them on the ball, he secures it, even in traffic.

Dailey: A lot of up side here I think. Seeing him on TV does not do his length justice. He is like Stretch Armstrong when he elevates and extends. I was hoping to see him drive it last night, but he likes the corner 3's too much apparently. Nice to see him hit a couple and get a run out dunk. I was most impressed with his ability to grab boards in traffic. Others stopped and he just kept rising and extending. Could be an Adrian Payne type player who can hit 3's. rebound, block shots, and rebound.

Guards against pressure: In one word, brutal. Hopefully other B1G teams are too distracted by the holidays to watch the film. I realize Bohannon has been thrown into the fire and it's not all on him, but he could not separate from the D-State defender and made multiple bad decisions. Iowa looked like they had never seen pressure in the back court before and Fran lost his markers and board during the TV time out and gave the death stare to the BTN camera guy poking his nose into the huddle. Camera guy quickly exiled by an assistant. Williams did a better job handling it, but the team needs to recognize the situation and come back to help out. I have been critical of Uhl, but will give him credit for his ball handling against the pressure. He was the only one not in panic mode when he had the ball.

I didn't think Uhl took advantage of his playing time last night, against a bad team, and in garbage time. I thought he was sloppy again, and couldn't finish around the rim on easy put backs. Can't explain it, but he just doesn't look like he fits in. Several times in the first half, I noticed he was outrebounded by a guy behind him, when he actually had position. I then stopped focusing on him and tried to be positive.

I agree 100%. When Cook comes back Uhl's playing time will decrease and then will depend on foul trouble. He just looks so unsure of himself.

Dailey's playing time, in my opinion, is most justifiable for his defensive ability. In addition to his length, he appears to have great balance and lateral quickness. Watching him deny top-to-wing passes he conjures up images of Stacey Augmon. And when the ball moves to the other side of the floor he executes help-side well. I think he already might be Iowa's best perimeter defender.

The future is bright for Dailey. I predict B1G All-Defensive Team before his career at Iowa is complete.

I also want to commend Williams for his defense the last few games. His effort level and attention to detail has made a positive jump.

So who is going to be odd man out and transfer to make room for new recruits next year

It remains to be seen but I think there are multiple possibilities and it will depend on how things go for several players down the stretch in terms of how they see their chances and fit going forward.

Transfer candidates...

Uhl - what he does best is defend on the perimeter as he can really move his feet for his size and handle the ball. He can't shoot consistently or finish. He does do not do well when there is contact around the basket. Dom could lose out even more on minutes going forward. He did not redshirt so he could transfer anywhere and sit out to further work his game before playing a final season. That makes sense to do. If he could just shoot consistently he could be a really big mismatch at the wing / 3. His form is not good enough to do that.

Williams - I was really excited about him going into this year but disappointed now. He really plays without much confidence or aggressiveness and has looked ackward at times handling the ball and making decisions. Really expected him to attack the basket more or post up smaller guards. His inability to shoot from the perimeter is an issue. I thought his defense with his length would be better than it has been. He looks more like a 2 / 3 but his outside shooting & slashing game is not there. Moss is much better and I think Dailey could be too. I could see him transferring to the MVC sitting out the year to work on his game. He has to really start asserting himself to make it.

Kreiner - I really like his upside but with limited PT this year and Garza & Nunge coming next year he could decide to move on strictly to find a bigger role. Hope not but you could understand. Too many players up front with Pemsl, Cook, Wagner, Baer, Uhl, Garza & Nunge. I think he's the best defensive rebounder on the team right now and wish he would see the floor more when we struggle to rebound.

Dailey - Exact same situation as Kreiner. Like his upside and think he has a far better all-around game than Williams. We will not have a true wing / 3 player next year so if he sticks it out he might win that spot. I have never liked Baer at the 3. Dailey can rebound and has Williams type length. He moves his feet well and can play D too. He can play multiple positions including the point for a few minutes if need be.

Wagner - If he could just shoot the ball he would make a really good wing / 3 man for next year with his athleticism. He's the best athlete and leaper on the team outside of Cook. He can play physical too. Ahmad really needed a red-shirt year to develop his shooting and all-around parts of his game. I see him transferring out very unlikely but you never know. If he wants to play a lot there will be a lot of guys to battle with up front for minutes; Pemsl, Cook, Baer, Uhl, Kreiner, Garza, Nunge potentially. There is only so much PT to go around and Cook & Pemsl look to be big factors going forward.

Ellingson - he is really doing a much better job this year and knocking down shots but he is still limited in other areas of the game. Probably will not transfer after this year since he redshirted but after next year if he wants a bigger role he could be a grad transfer to somewhere where he could start.

The summary is we are going to have some transfers the next 2 seasons so schollys are not going to be an issue.

I understand what you're saying but maybe, just maybe, no one transfers because they just like playing here at Iowa for Fran and staff and getting a good education. They can all IMO play in the B1G and some may get an opportunity to play professionally in Europe after their college careers are over , but most will finish their basketball career' s after graduating.

I think Dailey's best asset is his passing. He threw some really good long-range passes last night (one went right through Wagner's hands.).

Uhl and Ellingson could see a lot of playing time and be stars at Drake. Lord knows Drake needs some players. Ditto Dale Jones if he wants to do that Graduate transfer deal.

I watched Uhl in the shoot around and he would make a 3, then the next shot would have side spin and be an air ball. Then he would make one, have on go in and out, then back to a flat weird rotation shot that missed everything. His shoot is like my golf swing--different every time. Hard to be consistent when your release point is different with every shot.

I would like to see Dailey on the floor with the second unit. He is capable of getting 6-8 points in a burst by hitting a couple 3's, deflecting a pass and finishing or getting a board. He is lanky dude with good hops and long arms.

You correct. That's a possibility too but just percentages wise it's likely that 1-2 guys want a bigger role and transfers even if they love Iowa, Fran, the staff and the education. Some guys just want to play and their college careers are short with no guarantee of any opportunity after to play.

It's funny how two people can watch the same game and have such differing opinions. I love Dailey's potential, but I can see why he hasn't played more. He turned the ball over too much, and missed several wide open shots. I think he'll get there but isn't there yet.

I thought Uhl defended and rebounded like he had something to prove. Didn't force shots, and made good decisions with the ball. I dunno, maybe it's the level of the opposition, but we can really use him when he plays like he did tonight

I really liked what i saw from Dailey last nite. He obviously needs to get stronger, but he is going to be a really good player down the road and will make a nice combo of Dailey and Moss. Both can do it all on both ends of the court. Kriener is also a keeper, imo. PG continues to be the real issue now and into the future, imo.

Was happy Dailey got PT. Wags is aggressive. Brady's stroke is great. Dom still looks confused. But what really caught my eye was Ryan Kriener's work in the post. He played great D and rebounded nicely IMO. Even got some points. BTW the Wagner dunk was off the charts. No foul there. The defender was in the wrong place at the wrong time lol.

Connor probably walks on, and Jones is probably graduating. Two most likely scenarios.
Agreed. Jones' health issues should mean, he is not either here(graduated) or on scholarship next year. If that is the case and Connor walks on, no one needs to transfer out for all the incoming players to be a part of the team.

Seems like Jones probably does the grad transfer thing. Uhl /Daishe might transfer. If they don't, connor walks on for year. Connor probably should RS.
