*****Official B1G Baseball Tournament Games Thread. #3 IOWA vs #1 Maryland, Sunday 2:00 PM CT, BTN*****

There is a part of me that hopes Indiana wins later, beating them in the next round would be a nice RPI boost. Iowa has a regional in the bag I would think, let's improve on that.

For the NCAA Tourney, what would have to happen to get the:

2 seed

3 seed

4 seed

Personally, I think we have the 3 seed locked up.

Win the B1G Tourney? hmmmm.....maybe a 2 seed....

What's main advantage to a 2 vs 3 seed? Team matchups and where you get sent or just that 1 plays 4 and 2 plays 3?

Marty Sutherland, in the postgame interview:

He talked about the 5th inning and the game being tied at 1. The bases were loaded with Wolverines w/ nobody out; this was followed by 3 Whitlock strike outs. Iowa then scored 6 in the bottom of the 5th. He said that was the ball game.

"We've got a fun group; a resilient group."

I've read some people making the argument that a high 3 is better than a low 2 seed. The thinking is a low 2 has to face a tougher 1 seed in order to win. I'm not sure a high 3 get's placed in a better scenario, you are playing that low 2 seed in a high 1 bracket either way if I'm understanding the pairings correctly.

I like Iowa having the advantage in the first round of being the "home team" and I also like that first round opponent to be as weak as possible. Iowa has a really sweet 1-2 combo in Morgan and Brecht with Langenberg as the 3rd starter, there are not many teams that are as strong. Iowa is going to be a tough out in regional play.

Keaton Anthony has to be kicking himself...

This team is special.

With him in the line up? @EvilMonkeyInTheCloset would be thinking about you know what! ;)

Win the tournament and I think they are a 2 seed, they would have an impressive resume and RPI if that were to happen.

They have a 3 seed locked with that win over Michigan IMO. I will now be watching the selection show only curious as to where they wind up.

I can't help but wonder if there is any hope of him coming back next season. Assuming Brecht sticks around and keeps his butt out of the transfer portal (and Morgan) Iowa could have the most solid 1-2 pitching rotation in NCAA baseball next season in Brecht and Morgan and I think both wind up getting drafted after next season. If Anthony comes back he could lead an offense that could make a serious run at, not only the Big Ten Championship, but also a CWS run.

I know I'm looking way too far ahead as Iowa has a lot to play for this season. Exciting times for Iowa baseball.

How hard is it to determine how many bets he placed and how much money he bet/won/lost?

I just wish for his sake, the NCAA would move quickly and determine the punishment.

As we know, he's been punished 10 games so far.

Seiler pitched 2 scoreless innings. They now have Phillips on the mound. He issued a lead off walk in T3.
Indiana wins close games as we are well aware. Kraft for Indiana is out at least until the regionals. More possible good news for Iowa.

Why are the ump's so freaking bad the past few years? Glad the Hawks won (and won BIG over the Mulvarines).

An interesting strategy for tournament play. Spread the innings around while managing everyone's pitch count.

I thought Heller did a good job of this today. I think every pitcher except for Morgan would be available on Wednesday. I would think Morgan would be available again on Saturday if Iowa makes it that far.

Brecht still needs to sharpen the control, I hope that keeps him here 1 more year. Completely understand though if he gets a high draft pick that he jets for the $$.

More coaches need to do this - if you throw your top guys out and have little to no experience behind them, you don't go far. Heller did a heck of a job today.

I'd absolutely love it for Anthony to return next season but I'm not holding my breath. He followed up his phenomenal Freshman year with a season just as good (arguably better). Most people thought that he was gone after last year and the draft didn't play out as suspected.

We don't know the specifics on the gambling investigation. Lots of scenarios where he'd be forced to sit out the vast majority of next year (if the ultimate penalty is a year's suspension) or, worst case, he completely loses NCAA eligibility. I'm not spreading rumors that haven't been thrown out there before . . . there are plenty of stories suggesting that some of the betting was on the Iowa women's basketball team in the Final 4. Betting on another team affiliated with the university that you attend is considered a big "no-no" by the NCAA and can result in permanent ineligibility.

I'm not aware of any precedent involving a reduction of penalties issued by the NCAA where, for example, a University X football player bet on University X's mens basketball team. This may very well be an issue of first impression for the NCAA and, thus, as much as I'd like for Anthony's bat to be in the line-up, I'm not expecting for there to be good news even if Iowa receives word from the NCAA on its final decision. The guidelines for reinstatement don't specifically address player reinstatement if that player bet on a team from the same institution. The guidelines simply provide that the "starting" point is permanent ineligibility in that situation. If the guidelines suggest that the penalty for betting between $300 and $500 (and it didn't involved on-line betting!!) is a 50% of the year suspension, I'm not seeing the NCAA going easy on those who may (and I stress MAY) have bet on a fellow Hawkeye team.

About the best thing that we can hope for is that Anthony is (a) ruled eligible to start next year; (b) isn't drafted as high as he wants to be; and (c) feels like he can be part of something special next year while simultaneously improving draft status.

Brecht isn't eligible to be drafted until after next year.

Brecht is not eligible for the draft until after next season but I'm worried about him leaving for a higher profile baseball program now that he has quit football. This is just a feeling, it's not based on anything.

Before the Northwestern series, Heller said that some teams, with the exception of Illinois who didn't play a B1G team last weekend, may approach today's game like a mid-week bullpen game.

The one good thing about Anthony (from our POV), assuming he doesn't get hit with severe penalties, is that he's pretty much a bat only player at the next level. If Anthony does declare for the draft I think he winds up being a 8-10th round pick where teams offer minimum bonuses in order to save money on their draft pool.

BTW this Indiana/Illinois game is boring!

Illinois finally broke up the scoreless game. Top 5 and Illnois is up 1-0, Indiana brought in yet another pitcher Whiteaker.

I am sure someone (from an SEC school?) will attempt to tamper

I would be shocked if Brody entered the transfer portal potty, though

RECAP

Iowa ended its 2023 baseball regular season on a hot streak, winning eight of its final ten games. That hot streak continued into the postseason on Tuesday, as Iowa opened up the Big Ten Tournament by blasting 6-seed Michigan 13-3 to advance in the tournament.

The win was so lopsided that Iowa even managed to end the game early -- the Big Ten Tournament operates under a run rule -- if one team manages to get a 10-run lead, the game is over. Once Iowa scored its 13th run in the bottom of the 8th inning (opening up a 13-3 lead), the game was finished and the Hawkeyes could begin thinking about the next game of the tournament on Thursday.
