Stephen A Smith & Chiney Ogwumike debate the level of Caitlin Clark's impact on the WNBA

I don't think Mitchell is a great fit with Clark for the backcourt as she is limited defensively because of her size and we all know this is not Clark's strong suit either. I also think she likes the ball in her hands and it seemed to me the ball stopped moving well when it got to her. Clark's real strength is passing to a cutter or a well positioned post player. Neither are an asset with Mitchell. She can get out and run and certainly can score. I just don't think they pair well together for each other's strengths if you are trying to build a team.Agree. People questioning Boston need their heads examined. 7-12 from the field last night, 19 rebounds and 16 points. Can't really have a better game, and just finished her 2nd year and already an All Star along w/CC and Mitchell. Great core of 3. But that's all we have. Look at the 4 teams in the semis. All deep and talented. Smith quitting on the team and being a flop as the number 2 overall pick really sets a team back. We ended up playing Fagbenle 35 minutes last night because of that. She probably averages 8-10 minutes a game normally? And she played her ass off. But she's a journeywoman. Hull is a realistic 15-18 minute a game player on a top 4 team. Fever need at a minimum 2 athletic wings. And they also need competent backups for CC and also Mitchell, as it's ridiculous to expect them to play 35-38 minutes throughout every game of the entire season.
Very salient points IMO.I don't think Mitchell is a great fit with Clark for the backcourt as she is limited defensively because of her size and we all know this is not Clark's strong suit either. I think she fit better and better throughout the season. I almost got the feeling that at the end of the game, they let KM do her thing given her tenure with the team. It was a disaster and she knows it. That could have been the final gasp from her in terms of letting go of team control. If she plays complementary basketball with Clark they are an incredible duo, and hopefully that continues to get better next year and beyond.I don't think Mitchell is a great fit with Clark for the backcourt as she is limited defensively because of her size and we all know this is not Clark's strong suit either. Does she post here? This is all exactly what we have been saying!
It's just hard for the former alpha to give up the role.I think she fit better and better throughout the season. I’ll agree on a few points but she is an absolute dynamic scorer. And good luck getting a like for like player. They’ve had 1 season together and got better and better as the season went on. Look at the top 4 teams. They basically dominated the Olympic team. If you can get a better player than Mitchell in some kind of like for like trade than great. I’m not sure that’s out there. Considering the salary cap is likely to go up after 2025, we are likely going to see FAs looking for one year contracts. Looking at the list of unrestricted free agents, there aren't many SGs to go after. https://www.spotrac.com/wnba/free-agents/_/year/2025/type/ufa/sort/contract_value I doubt a 30 year old Plum will come to play next to CC, plus her defense is almost as bad as KM's.I’ll agree on a few points but she is an absolute dynamic scorer. Agree with this. I’d actually take Mitchell over Plum right now. If there's nobody that's a high-end 2-way player at SG willing to come in, I could see KM signing for a 1 year max contract in hopes she can get a bigger one the next year. That helps bridge the gap to the 2026 season that the Fever are really going to be shooting for going big when the bad contracts mostly come off the books, per my post above.
This is also when a hopeful SG draft pick would be able to be a 1 year backup before stepping into a starter role if KM decides to walk following 2025, assuming a 1 year contract.

I think their most glaring hole is an athletic 4 who can also shoot and not play like a complete dumbass. Sabally seems perfect. We also need a wing, but I think we got killed the worst throughout the season by the better teams at the 4 position.I’ll agree on a few points but she is an absolute dynamic scorer. There were definitely more (at least louder) Fever/Clark fans there than Sun fans. The announced attendance (total tickets distributed) last night was 8,910. Mohegan Sun Arena's capacity is 10,000 and the Sun couldn't even fill that.
Listen to the crowd's reaction when CC nails a 3 and the Fever take the 4th quarter lead.
This sounds like a Fever home game. The WNBA is a joke. I look forward to seeing the crazy bad viewership numbers moving forward.
Listen to the Fever fans:
What's crazy is that if the team was playing as well in the beginning of the season as at the end of the season (including Clark), and her teammates didn't miss so damn many bunnies and layups, she could be pushing 2,000 points generated.

Absolutely agree that the Fever’s #1 need is at Forward. Go get Gustafson - a player who, unlike Smith, will give 100 % effort on defense (and she can score).I think their most glaring hole is an athletic 4 who can also shoot and not play like a complete dumbass. Would be great if they could rebound.Absolutely agree that the Fever’s #1 need is at Forward.
Reading that is depressing. The Fever roster has significant issues. The bigger problem is that everyone knows they're going to be buyers instead of sellers. And they don't have much in the way of assets that other teams will want. They also have too many non-contributors on contract for another year or more. 2026 is really the season they should be targeting for a championship run.
They're going have to hope that either Smith or KLS gets taken in the expansion draft. KLS is at least a good teammate and has a chance at being a better player another year removed from having her kid. Smith leaving would be addition by subtraction. Hopefully it is Smith that gets selected. But otherwise, trades in the WNBA are rare. And with what the Fever have as assets, no meaningful trades are going to happen. If neither Smith or KLS are taken, then the GM has to find a way to do a 2 for 1 package of Smith with one of the cheap contracts like Berger/Saxton to a team to open up a roster spot.
- Mitchell is a FA, so the team can't trade her.
- Wheeler is a FA, so the team can't trade her and nobody would want her.
- Temi is a FA and basically a replacement player that nobody will want.
- KLS is under contract for another year, but nobody will want her because her contract is badly overpaid.
- Smith is under contract for another year, but almost nobody will want an underperforming player that is going to look to get paid in a year as a RFA.
- Wallace is under contract for another and has no value.
- Dantas is under contract for another year and has limited value in a trade. With her contract she's more valuable to keep on the bench
- Berger is under contract for 2 more years and has no value.
- Saxton is under contract for 2 more years and has no value.
- Hull is under contract for another year, and has some trade value but is the only person on the team that can defend. With her contract she's more valuable to keep, hopefully as a bench player.
- Boston is nearly untouchable, but does have a lot of trade value for the right offer.
- Clark is untouchable.
At PG you let Wheeler walk and go with Berger as the backup to Clark.
At SG you have to address it in FA. As on fire as Mitchell was to finish the regular season, I'd see if there's any SG out there that you can get as a FA that also plays defense. If you can't find that then you offer Mitchell a big contract to keep her for another year. I'm thinking that they'll find a SG in the draft to play backup, hopefully Citron from ND. Mitchell is probably a max contract player, you may be able to find the defensive SG at a cheaper rate.
At SF, you want Hull to come off the bench where she delivers great value, so you're looking for a 3 and D style player in FA. Maybe not a max contract, but something large. You may not be able to do that though if KLS is still around considering her contract. So this is still a potential weak point on the team and you're hoping KLS gets better after another year out from having her baby.
Once you know what you're doing at SG, then you can figure out PF/C. You're probably resigning Temi for cheap to go along with Boston and Dantas. If you bring back Mitchell, then you need a big that is a defensive presence. If you bring in a defensive SG, then another big that has some shooting range would be useful. This is probably a max contract-style player in FA.
That's a 10-deep roster with 1- 3 new Free Agents, and Wallace/Saxton on the deep bench burning out their contracts.
That team is probably not making it past the 2nd round in the playoffs, even with a new coach. With Sides it probably has a similar result to this season. Hands are really tied until roster spots open up from bad contracts/bad players. Saxton, Wallace, Berger, KLS, and Smith are all basically empty roster spots right now, with a bit less than $500k of cap space being chewed up by them.
That is not the answer. Not even close. 10 minutes a game off the bench? Yes.Absolutely agree that the Fever’s #1 need is at Forward. Go get Gustafson - a player who, unlike Smith, will give 100 % effort on defense (and she can score).
My post assumed Smith will be gone. That handwriting is already on the wall. That is not the answer. Not even close. 10 minutes a game off the bench? Yes.
Excellent post. We all wanted the matchup with the Sun instead of the Lynx, but that really bit us in the Ass when Smith went awol. I can't EVER remember a team in the pros or college who was forced to sit a starter (she played like 3 or 4 minutes) because it became obvious that they couldn't trust her to give a winning effort vs "her girl's team". Craziest thing I've seen in a pro game. I mean I totally agree with not playing her, and said as much after Sundays game, but that along with KLS providing NOTHING the last month, (Hull having to start) has destroyed what little bench the Fever had. There were several times that CC22 looked absolutely worn out, and playing her and Mitchell so many minutes the last month certainly had an impact on the last two games.Agree. We all love Gustfason, but she isn't a starter at the 4 in the WNBA. She's changed her game a lot, but her physical limitations will hold her back through her career. Backup on a sub 100k contract, yes. However the Aces have her signed for another year so that isn't happening unless they're willing to make a trade. Only way we bring her on is if Temi doesn't re-sign and we can get them to swing a trade for Smith. But a team ran as well as theirs isn't going to take on that drama. My post assumed Smith will be gone. That handwriting is already on the wall.
I don't disagree that Clark CAN improve on defense, but I still believe that she has the same type of issues that Luka had. The fact that she can create offense at such a high level, (she's almost peerless even in the W) I think has people overlooking her issues as an athlete. She just doesn't have the kind of quickness or lateral movement that many of the leagues guards have. Luka improved his somewhat by losing 35lbs when he went pro to gain a bit of quickness and mobility. Clark probably needs to add another 10lbs of muscle. (Which I'm sure she will). I think eventually CC can play decent defense in a team concept, IF the team gets the players, coaching and attitude to do it.I think Clark can definitely learn to play better defense, but she's going to have to actually focus on it. She rarely even gets into a proper defensive stance and posture to defend and move laterally. Sure, that takes some quicks, but also takes practice and technique. Maybe she adds more of that to her off-season workouts.
Lolol. again why would the Sun make that trade? Just to make Carrington happy?Trade Smith to the Sun for Nelson-Ododa.
