*****Official Cubs 2019 thread*****

It wasn't lazy, there's no need to trash character, it was just non-committal. If contact play is on, you're toast, but you're going much faster and you're just dead to rights. He was tentative and that's a place where you can't be tentative. Even if you're on contact and you go hard, you make the pitcher really focus on what you're doing and make a choice to throw ahead or behind you, which can make a big difference. He just kind of got caught and wasn't sure what to do.
Agree to disagree!

He sure didn't seem to try to hard to help willy get to 2nd.....

I am not saying he was lazy because he didn't score on a basically impossible play to score

All of you band wagon sons of bitches can stay out of this thread for the rest of the night!!! ;)

No excuse.

Cubs aren’t even giving 100% at this point.

Simple task: get the runner in from 3rd.

Contreras failed.

Cubs hitters failed.

Hendricks failed.

The Cubs suck right now, and frankly look like they don’t give a damn.

How about now? :)

He's just limited. I don't think he was capable of keeping that rundown going long enough to get Willson to 2nd....especially because he didn't force the pitcher's hand out of the gate because of his tentativeness.

Damn. Now what?

The Fox announcers were talking about this. Math is math. This doesn't really change anything unless you think the Cubs absolutely had to sweep the Cards in all 4. However, this changes the perception game. There's now more pressure on the Cubs. There's more negative momentum. This takes a little pressure off Nats and Brewers.....but the math is unchanged.

It means what it meant before today. The Cubs need to win baseball games. ASAP.

Cub Closer Craig Kimbrel is 0-3 with an ERA 5.95
He was counted on to be the savior of the bullpen.
Somebody misjudged his potential with the Cubs.

Not really. Go back in this thread. Pitchers who miss spring training and start late generally don't have great results. Add to that the fact that Kimbrell is an aging pitcher who wasn't especially outstanding the 2nd half of last year.

And yet, when the Cubs signed him, the Cub bullpen was a mess and he was BY FAR the best available option that would cost the Cubs only money and not what's left of their farm system.

He won't be prime-of-his-career Kimbrell next year, but he'll be better just by virtue of having a normal offseason and a spring training.

the farm system issues certainly won’t be fixed but I think you are overestimating the difficulty of rebuilding the pen and lineup. The core of the lineup is as good as any team but the role players don’t compliment the core.

The starting rotation will be mediocre at best. Washed up Lester, head case (and turning 34) Darvish, innings eater Quintana, and soft-tossing Hendricks.

The fifth spot will be filled by a journeyman whom Theo Epstein overpays while negotiating against himself, or Adbert Alzolay who will probably have an ERA around 5.00.

But at least they will be paying Lester/Darvish/Kimbrel about $60M, plus another $3M to Morrow just to go away.

Gosh, Theo is a genius. Feels a lot like 2011-2012 Boston.

Pretty much a rule that if you’re a Cubs pitcher, your best days are long past.

I looked at the amateur draft results for the Cubs since Theo/Jed/Jason took over, and it's underwhelming to say the list.
I was not comprehensive or thorough. I didn't really rate out every draft pick who was traded. This is just basically a list of guys who the Cubs drafted and made it to the majors as a Cub.
2012: Albert Almora, David Bote, and Duane Underwood.
2013: Kris Bryant and Rob Zastrysny
2014: Kyle Schwarber, Mark Zagunis and James Norwood.
2015: Ian Happ
2016: Nobody
2017: Nobody, however, Cory Abbot was drafted this year, and he was just named the pitcher of the year in the system
2018: Nico Hoerner. And, Brennen Davis, who was named the position player of the year in the minors this year was drafted.

Take out the first round selections and it's a devastating indictment of the tenure of Jason McLeod.

Chapman from the NYY probably opts out after this season. If Maddon is gone, Chapman would likely consider the Cubs.

Just sayin!:p

Both Schwarber and Contrares were stupid on that play. Schwarber gets his ass caught after Contrares stupidly grounds right back to the pitcher.

Then Schwarber doesn’t try to stay in the rundown long enough to get Contrares to 2nd. Didn’t matter anyway because Contrares was dogging it himself.

Just terrible baseball from both of them.

I'm tired of the "stupid" argument. Flaherty is having an all-time 2nd half. To read your posts, Jake Arrieta did nothing in 2015, the opponents were just not trying and didn't care.

The Cubs aren't the only team full of guys who are paid to play baseball.

Thanks, but no thanks. At some point, his career is going to end REALLY abruptly.
