*****Official Cubs 2019 thread*****

Cubs are so desperate right now they’re complaining about a long lace hanging from the glove of the pitcher. Jfc.

Meanwhile....over at Miller Park, the Brew Crew had their tying run taken away by a missed call by the home plate ump....

2-1 Pads in the ninth

If I was Theo I’d shut Wick down. He has some excellent potential. He’s also pitched more innings this year than he ever has as a pro. Shut him down now before Joe throws him 9 days in a row.

Derek Holland...

As in so many cases, the bullpen usage was.....odd. I can't really complain about the pen. I thought Joe pulled Strop too early. He gave up two hits, but they were basically grounders that found holes (Reds' homer announcer's words, not mine). Not sure why you bring in Chatwood before Wick when you know you're going to have to hit for the P after Chatwood's inning. Wick and Chatwood were tremendous tonight. I'd have loved to have flipped their order, throw Wick then hit for him and let Chatwood throw 2-3. If the Cubs find their way to the postseason, they need Kimbrell back and then Wick & Chatwood need to be the 7th/8th and/or high leverage guys.

But, really, JFC.....the Cubs have slipped back into spin mode when they get 2 MF hits off Mahle. I was frustrated with yesterday, but Gray will shut people down...but Mahle? It's not like they had to face Castillo, Gray, Bauer in this series.

Hey, at least we didn't have to face Luis Castillo in this series.

I think the Cubs finished 8-11 against the Reds this year, and it will probably cost them a playoff spot.
Was thinking same about Reds and playoffs. This season has been so weird with every hot streak undone by dropping a bunch of games in a row and just an amazing amount of close losses. There have been a few good moments, but overall this season won’t be noted for clutch hitting.

Or clutch pitching.

Blame Epstein all you want, but those pitchers are paid a lot of money to do a job and they failed way more than is acceptable. By and large, the Cubs relievers stunk in crucial situations. Not a lot mental toughness from them.

For September the bullpen has the best era in the game.

With the exception of about 3 weeks of exceptional baseball this was a .500 team all season. That’s why they won’t make the playoffs, they are just average.

I don't think it was a missed call. Pretty sure it was the correct call. He kicked the ball with his foot outside the box

It bounced off him, while inside the box.

They changed the explanation to "running inside the baseline", per the Feed on the MLB app.

https://www.mlb.com/gameday/padres-...,lock_state=final,game_tab=videos,game=567628

If you watch this clip, you can see he is out of the box when he kicks it. Where he kicks it is considered inside the baseline but out of the box.

I watched the clip on the MLB feed; he was inside the box (foot that hit the ball) and the audio stated that as well. They changed it to running inside the baseline, whether that was the correct call, or not.

The point made was that is was not a "reviewable" call, and it probably should have been.

We'll agree to disagree on that...if you stop the clip at 4 sec. it shows that he is inside the box, but his foot is outside of the box to the inside almost on top of the plate. By rule that is inside the baseline when he touched the ball even though he is inside the box his foot was not.

By rule, after the ball bounces off the umpire or catcher, it is not a foul for it to contact him. The 'above home plate feed' showed him moving his foot, as the ball came from behind him, so it's fairly obvious it was not an intentional kick, it was him planting his foot to run.

They should have allowed review of those videos to assess if it "impeded the catcher", because originally the ump called 'no'. That feed is on the MLB app, and I presume at the team website. In that vid, Counsel says the home plate ump "didn't see it" and relied on the 3rd base ump, who obviously didn't have as good a view.

That top view shows it bounces off his foot before his foot is even planted - from behind, ergo, he's still inside the box.

Chatwood and Wick were absolutely fantastic last night. Chatwood ripped through the heart of the Reds order and K'd Cub killers Suarez & Aquino and then got VanMeter looking. Wick had to get 4 outs thanks to a ridiculous error by Bote and he did walk one guy, but he got out of it unscathed.

I was going to say. I can't get the game where I live so was watching MLB Tonight and following the game on the app, knew it was tied late. MLB Network goes into this piece on how the Cubs pieced together bullpen has been the best in baseball since the All-Star break. Right then I was like "ah frick, way to jinx it!"

I’m very surprised how many of you are still heavily invested in this season. Not me, I’m done.

That said, I’m still optimistic about the final 2 years of the window. Theo has similar problems in Boston and was able to recover and win another World Series. The problems here are solvable and the Ricketts have shown they will spend.

Just want to get in. Never know what can happen. Also, don't want to give in to the stinking Brewers or Cardinals.

As nervous as I am as a Cardinals fan, it's fascinating that everything that happened prior to today is basically irrelevant. The only think that matters is these last 7 games against each other. I'd prefer that this happen to two AL contenders but since I haven't seen the Cardinals in the playoffs for a few years, I'll gladly take this tension.

3 games out of first in the division & at the moment tied for a wild card spot. 7 games left against the Cardinals, how the hell can you give up on them?

This team is hard to cheer for, they dont do much well and the math doesnt look good. They need to win 9 of 10 to tie st louis, likely. Oh and missing 2 of their best 3 players.

The cubs lead the league in outs made on the basepaths, have committed the second-most errors in the NL and have converted only 58% of their save chances. If they were even average in any of these categories they would likely have a decent size lead.

Brand loyalty and years of truly crappy teams that I also rooted for.
